The Tathāgata Must Fail

Chapter 101: It's a Waste

The Jade Emperor summoned Sun Wukong to Heaven, but Sun Wukong was not in a hurry.

He asked Gold Star Taibai if he could go tomorrow—tomorrow, which is next year, with over half a year's time.

Seizing this time, Sun Wukong accelerated the construction of the Spiritual Network in the Kingdom of Aolai.

Half a year later, the framework of the Kingdom of Aolai's Spiritual Network was completed—Sun Wukong then entrusted the remaining work to Lady Rakshasa.

Afterwards, he took a Somersault Cloud to the South Heavenly Gate.

The Heavenly Soldiers and Generals at the South Heavenly Gate had already received the news and actively made way for Sun Wukong.

Returning to the Heavenly Palace, the sky dimly lit, clouds spreading before his eyes, Sun Wukong felt a different sensation.

He looked back, glancing at the world beyond the South Heavenly Gate.

"Indeed it's somewhat different."

Sun Wukong thoughtfully observed for a while before heading to Tongming Hall.

At Tongming Hall, Sun Wukong saw the Jade Emperor for the second time.

"Please, take a seat."

Upon seeing Sun Wukong, the Jade Emperor invited him to sit.

He inquired: "Do you play chess?"

Sun Wukong wasn't skilled in chess, but still nodded: "A little."

"Then play a game with me."

The Jade Emperor unfolded the chessboard.

"I've heard about the situation in Aolai Kingdom."

The Jade Emperor, holding a piece in hand, said: "One day in Heaven is a year on Earth, and you are rushing your affairs."

Every day he would receive news of Sun Wukong's exploits, listening to them often enough to give rise to worry.

It was fortunate that he learnt from the morning's report on Aolai's Spiritual Network that it was not much of a big deal, merely increasing the concentration of Spiritual Energy.

The Spiritual Network of Aolai paled in comparison to even one percent of Huaguo Mountain's, implying that Sun Wukong still exercised restraint.

"Consult me before undertaking such endeavors in the future."

The Jade Emperor's first move planted a piece at Tengen.

Watching the chessboard, Sun Wukong played a 3-3 point response.

"Yes."

He did not retort.

The Jade Emperor was satisfied with his attitude.

"Do you know what Gold Star Taibai asked me to do yesterday?"

He moved his chess piece forward.

"I don't."

Sun Wukong played another move.

"He suggested I officially bestow upon you an official position."

The Jade Emperor spoke, his hand swiftly dropping the chess piece, seemingly leaving no time for Sun Wukong to think.

"Lately you have done quite a bit, Earth Immortals have all reaped some benefits."

The Jade Emperor continued: "Now I can grant you an official Immortal Position. You can propose what you wish, but on one condition, you must stay in Heaven."

Sun Wukong paused his motion, then returned to normalcy.

He crafted his words and began to discuss with the Jade Emperor.

The Jade Emperor did not hide his concern from him; indeed, he had his own worries recently.

After the chess game concluded, Sun Wukong ultimately agreed.

"I won."

The Jade Emperor gazed at the chessboard, smiling contentedly: "Your chess needs improvement."

"I am no match for Your Majesty."

Sun Wukong replied.

The Jade Emperor looked at him with some emotion.

This monkey truly was endearing; always a source of concern when unseen, but surprisingly amiable face to face.

As long as he explained clearly, Sun Wukong could understand his dilemma, stepping back and agreeing to take up a position in Heaven.

"How about the Immortal Peach Orchard?"

The Jade Emperor inquired: "I heard Immortal Zhenyuan brought you some Flat Peaches. If you fancy them, I will gift you the Immortal Peach Orchard as your official residence."

Sun Wukong was stunned.

How did the Jade Emperor know of these matters?

"You think Flat Peaches can be taken away so easily?"

The Jade Emperor chuckled: "The little acts of Zhen Yuan were discovered long ago."

But they were only a few peaches, nobody really minded anyway.

"The Immortal Peach Orchard..."

Sun Wukong thought carefully and ultimately declined.

Flat Peaches could extend lifespan, but they were of no further use to him.

"The Observatory."

Sun Wukong declared: "I want the Observatory."

The Jade Emperor was puzzled: "Why the Observatory? There's hardly anything there, not even an official residence."

"It doesn't matter."

Sun Wukong shook his head: "I just want the Observatory."

The Jade Emperor thought for a moment, then nodded.

"No problem, I will order a residence to be built for you. Return to Huaguo Mountain for now; in a few days, I will send an edict to you."

"Thank you, Your Majesty."

Sun Wukong bowed.

Before the morning court began at the Palace of the Polestar, Sun Wukong left the Heavenly Palace.

He returned to Huaguo Mountain, convening all the Demon Kings.

"In a few years, I will take up an official position in Heaven."

As soon as Sun Wukong spoke, all the Demon Kings were visibly shocked.

"Brother, why is this?"

Ao Luan urgently inquired.

Sun Wukong shared the reason—it was the will of the Jade Emperor.

But Sun Wukong also had his own considerations.

His deeds in the Lower Realm encountered quite the pushback from numerous immortals in Heaven. If these oppositions continued to grow, they would inevitably become obstacles.

The barriers were not solely born from repulsion; more so, they sprang from a lack of understanding towards him.

Sun Wukong had minimal contact with other immortals; hearing about him and Huaguo Mountain, they first thought of 'alien' and 'trouble,' and anything he did could exacerbate the impression.

"I need to interact more and deepen their understanding of us."

Sun Wukong stated.

He had been inviting five immortals each year to the mortal world, precisely for this purpose—but now it seemed going to Heaven himself was even better.

"I asked the Jade Emperor for a casual position."

Sun Wukong went on: "Once I am in Heaven, I can visit various immortals and make more friends."

His chosen method to dispel hostility was to make friends widely.

The Jade Emperor understood his thoughts and readily agreed.

"A good strategy."

Immortal Zhen Yuan, having listened to Sun Wukong's plans, nodded in agreement: "Being articulate and persuasive, you are certain to accomplish your goal."

Without holding a position in the Heavenly Palace once, those immortals would find it hard to regard Sun Wukong as one of their own.

With so many immortals, as long as Sun Wukong persuades some, anything he wishes to do will naturally follow through.

"Given my understanding of my younger brother, this is hardly a challenging ordeal."

Immortal Zhen Yuan said.

The other Demon Kings whispered amongst themselves for a while, all finding the plan feasible.

Only Ao Luan furrowed her brows with concern.

"Brother, when will you ascend to Heaven?"

Ao Luan asked.

"I do not know."

Sun Wukong shook his head, uncertain when the Jade Emperor would complete the official residence.

Sun Wukong, seeing Ao Luan's furrowed brows, knew her worries.

"Don't worry, I won't stay in the Heavenly Palace forever."

He stated: "At most for a decade or so, I will return."

A decade or so was his maximum promise to the Jade Emperor.

Any longer would be wasteful.

Sun Wukong did not have much time to waste.
