Apocalypse: Last Traveler

Chapter 184: Noodle Death!

After watching a movie, Lu Xi'an and Yao Wei were silent for a while.

Lu Xi'an asked, "We didn't fall asleep watching this one. Shall we watch another?"

But Yao Wei glanced at the bottom right corner of the screen and said, "The battery is running low."

Lu Xi'an sighed helplessly, "An old computer has a battery that doesn't last long."

Yao Wei didn't know how long a brand-new computer could last, but she was already quite satisfied with this one, being able to finish a whole movie after a day of sun exposure.

Anyway, this computer is only turned on before bedtime, and it doesn't stay on for long.

Like tonight, finishing a movie was already a rare exception.

She quietly shut off the computer, lay down, and pulled the sheet over, saying, "Let's sleep."

Both of them lay down, their hands clasped around the Fungus Stone on the central console, though sleepiness took its time to come.

Lu Xi'an was still reflecting on the plot in the computer, recalling scenes from the story, and said, "Should we try making some noodles to eat tomorrow?

"I forgot before, but corn can be ground into flour."

Yao Wei said, "But we don't have that packet."

She was referring to the seasoning packet.

In the movie, the character found a packet of seasoning but had no noodles, so they stored the seasoning and planted grains found in collected bird droppings.

When the grains matured into corn, they ground it into flour, made dough, cut it into strips, cooked it, and added the seasoning packet for a delightful meal.

Lu Xi'an and Yao Wei couldn't help but feel hungry watching this scene.

Lu Xi'an said, "No problem, we have oil, salt, soy sauce, and vinegar, which are also seasonings. We can adjust the taste ourselves.

"We'll have a good meal tomorrow and make sure we're full before heading out to work."

"Okay."

Yao Wei, hearing Lu Xi'an say this, stopped offering opinions, closed her eyes, and said, "Let's sleep."

At that moment, she was quite eager to sleep, looking forward to breakfast tomorrow.

Early the next morning, after handling personal matters, Lu Xi'an took out two ears of corn, shelled the kernels, and rubbed them into powder.

It was a necessity.

In the movie, the protagonist found a stone mortar and a pestle on a deserted island, put the corn kernels into the mortar, and ground them into powder using the pestle.

But now Lu Xi'an and Yao Wei lacked such tools. They did have sticks to replace the pestle, but the problem was the absence of a stone mortar; using a bowl or pot as a substitute might lead to breakage.

So it was better to rub them directly by hand.

As Type A Neo-Humans, rubbing corn kernels into powder by hand was actually quite easy and effortless for the two of them.

Moreover, doing it this way didn't require a specific place. They could do it sitting right in the car without worrying about the wind scattering the freshly ground flour.

Also, with their strength and perfect control over their power, the flour they rubbed out was even finer than what the protagonist achieved with the pestle in the movie.

A perfect solution, all in one go!

After the flour was rubbed, the next step was kneading the dough.

The flour was directly rubbed into the pot, and then water was added right into it.

Lu Xi'an hadn't made noodles himself for a long time and had never kneaded dough in a pot, not to mention that now it's corn flour, not white flour.

It was extremely difficult to knead the dough, and he couldn't grasp the proportions, still relying on brute force for miraculous results. All the while, he guided Yao Wei to add water, add water, and add more water, while avoiding too much force that might break the pot.

Ultimately, when the dough was formed, it only looked barely acceptable.

But even then, Lu Xi'an and Yao Wei felt satisfied enough.

Lu Xi'an pressed the dough, leaving a small dent the size of a fingertip, feeling both hard and soft, quite wondrous.

"You try."

He said to Yao Wei.

Yao Wei gently pressed it, as if afraid of damaging the dough.

By this time, she had witnessed the entire journey of an ear of corn transforming from cob to powder to dough.

Though she only exerted some effort at the beginning during the shelling and powdering, later merely assisting, she cherished the transformation from start to finish, expressing immense value for the corn dough.

Lu Xi'an looked at the dough again and sighed, "Originally, I wanted to try making ramen, but looking at its firmness, it seems a bit difficult. Let's just cut it into strips and cook it directly."

"Okay."

Yao Wei nodded. Just being able to eat noodles made from corn was already gratifying for her, regardless of whether it's ramen or any other kind of noodles.

Following Lu Xi'an's instructions, she got out of the car, set up a woodpile, and lit a fire. After lighting the fire, she placed a pot on to boil water.

As the water boiled, she and Lu Xi'an together picked out pieces of dough from the pot, rolling them into strips and placing them in the pan.

However, this resulted in uneven lengths and thicknesses of the strips.

This was unavoidable. They could control their own strength, but they couldn't control the dough made purely of corn flour. They could only let it be, rolling as long as it would allow. If some broke in the middle, it didn't matter; they all could be eaten, regardless of length.

After all the dough was picked into pieces and rolled into strips, the water in the pot had nearly boiled. Lu Xi'an lifted the pan, placed the noodles into the pot, then stirred them with Yao Wei's chopsticks, using the pan as a lid.

After a while, the pot started making a sizzling sound.

Lu Xi'an lifted the pan and handed it to Yao Wei, noticing the water in the pot had turned yellow, with white-yellow bubbles rising with the temperature, about to overflow.

Lu Xi'an quickly blew a couple of breaths, scattering the foam, which promptly subsided and disappeared.

But when he stopped blowing, the foam gradually rose again, with signs of impending overflow.

Lu Xi'an glanced at Yao Wei and smiled, "Would you like to try?"

"Okay."

Yao Wei nodded and blew a breath into the pot, watching the foam disperse and rise again, then blowing another breath, waiting for a while, seeing the foam rise once more, and blowing again.

And so, the task of watching the pot fell into Yao Wei's hands.

Lu Xi'an kept an eye on it from the side. After a while, feeling it was about ready, he fished out a noodle with chopsticks, caught it with a bowl, and said to Yao Wei, "Want to try?"

Yao Wei took the bowl and chopsticks, picked up a noodle with the chopsticks and put it in her mouth.

It had a bit of the sweetness of corn, was soft yet slightly elastic, and extremely pleasant to chew, a sensation completely different from other foods.

"How is it?"

Lu Xi'an asked.

"Hmm."

Yao Wei nodded; it felt good.

"Is it cooked?"

Lu Xi'an asked again.

"Should be cooked..."

Yao Wei thought for a moment, giving a not-so-confident judgment.

She couldn't really tell, just felt like it was edible.

Lu Xi'an could only have Yao Wei give him the bowl, then he fished out a noodle himself, bit off a piece, and observed the cross-section of the broken noodle as he felt it.

"Cook it a little longer, and it'll be ready."

He made his judgment.

So Yao Wei continued watching the pot.

Lu Xi'an remembered something, fetched a bag of dehydrated vegetables.

Once the noodles in the pot were done, he took the pot off the stove, then placed the wok back on, heated the oil, added soy sauce and salt to stir-fry it, then added water to make a sauce, put in the dehydrated vegetables, stirred until mixed, then took it off the fire.

In this way, a simple sauce with vegetables was completely ready.

If this were in the past, he probably wouldn't give it a second glance, but to him now, it was a rare delicacy.

He served a bowl of noodles to Yao Wei, added some sauce and vegetables, drizzled a bit of vinegar, mixed it well, handed the bowl to Yao Wei, and said, "Here you go."

Yao Wei reached out, took just one noodle, and put it in her mouth, feeling much different than before this time.

The thoroughly cooked noodles had a much better texture than before, along with the flavors Lu Xi'an added and the rehydrated vegetables; the taste was quite delightful.

This gave Yao Wei an experience she had never had before.

She took bite after bite, eating quite a bit, and looked up to see Lu Xi'an watching her, saying, "You should eat too."

Lu Xi'an said, "I'll wait and see if you want more. If not, I'll put the remaining noodles into the wok and eat them straight from there."

Yao Wei said, "You can eat it right now, if I want more later, I'll just eat from the wok."

Lu Xi'an didn't wait then, directly scooped the remaining noodles into the wok.

He ate these noodles with satisfaction; it had been so long since he had enjoyed a meal like this, especially one made from scratch by him and Yao Wei. It was not just food, but also a sense of accomplishment he was savoring.

What an exceptional feeling!

He was almost done eating, and Yao Wei had finished her bowl of noodles. She even drank all the sauce, not willing to waste any of it.

Lu Xi'an asked if she wanted more; she then joined him in eating from the wok.

It was fun for the two of them to eat from one pot. As they ate, they caught each other's gaze and couldn't help but laugh.

However, Yao Wei felt she was nearly full and didn't eat much more. She took a few less bites, leaving the rest for Lu Xi'an.

After he finished the noodles, Lu Xi'an picked up the wok, learning from Yao Wei's example, and poured a big mouthful of sauce into his mouth.

Such a thing would never happen in the past. The sauce was always left uneaten, and he almost never touched it.

But now it was different; not a single drop of food could be wasted.

He and Yao Wei shared the sauce, drinking it all, and smacked his lips saying, "A bit salty."

"Hmm."

Yao Wei nodded in agreement with Lu Xi'an's judgment.

"Then let's drink the noodle soup too,"

Lu Xi'an added, "There's a saying, the original soup can digest the original food better."

"Sure."

Yao Wei was already thinking the same, readily agreeing.

Then the two of them shared the noodle soup as well.

After drinking, the meal was completely finished.

After tidying up pots and bowls, the two got in the car. Lu Xi'an, with one hand on the steering wheel, rubbed his stomach with the other, and let out a long sigh, saying, "Comfortable!"

"Hmm."

Yao Wei nodded in agreement with Lu Xi'an's feeling. She also rubbed her stomach.

Her flat belly was slightly bulging; she always looked like this when full, and Lu Xi'an always enjoyed sneaking a peek—it looked quite nice to him.

But after a glance, Lu Xi'an withdrew his gaze, took a deep breath, and said, "Alright, enough food and drink, time to set off. Next stop is Luo Ping's place. Hopefully our luck holds, and nothing bad happens."

"Hmm."

Yao Wei nodded again, saying, "It will all be alright."

Lu Xi'an smiled, "Yes, our luck has always been good."

"Hmm."
