The Lupine System

Chapter 80: Things Are Moving

Things Are Moving

Before they could protest, a bunch of staff suddenly appeared and ushered all the students out of the auditorium despite their protests. It was all so abrupt that many wondered if they had even put any proper thought into this.

Alas, they were all ushered outside, and what followed was over a hundred students being taken to another part of the school.

"Well, this is sudden," Mike mumbled as they were led away from the auditorium. As they walked, he could feel the gazes of several people on them, and when he looked around, he saw that many students and teachers had paused what they were doing to observe the scene. The most prominent emotion in the air was curiosity, and Mike couldn't blame them.

Apparently, this had never been done before, so it wasn't odd that most of the seniors and non-combat-oriented students were curious about why this was happening, and that's if they even knew where they were going.

'Oh, it's that place?' Mike thought as he realized they were being taken to what seemed like the Academy's personal spaceport. He'd seen it a few times but never went as only seniors and people with related courses could go over there.

Now, though, it seemed like that wouldn't be the case.

"Are we not gonna be able to pack anything with us?" Theresa asked with some worry.

"I doubt it. My hope is that they will give us everything we need while there, but I'm not too sure." Mike said with furrowed brows.

To the students who didn't know this event was happening, all of this must have been incredibly baffling.

Sadly, it seemed like there wasn't anything anyone would be able to do about it, so they all just followed along.

Soon enough, they reached the spaceport, and Mike couldn't help but marvel at it.

Similar to the one he'd seen when he arrived on Proxima Centauri D, a large area had been cleared out, with the ground being replaced with metallic panels that had magnetic properties.

On it, rows upon rows of ships were arranged. From light spacecraft to massive ships that looked like they could fit thousands.

Each ship was sleek in its design, and one thing to note was that they all had a somewhat similar design and the same color scheme, with the symbol of the academy on the side, indicating that they were all of similar types.

Most of the other students were also in awe at the sight. Staring at the ships, especially the bugger ones, made a lot of them feel so small.

"Hey, I recognize that ship," Theresa muttered and pointed at one ship that was a bit farther away.

It wasn't the biggest of all the ones they could see, but it was still easily over a kilometer long, and the number of weapons on it was quite intimidating.

"Yeah... That's the Orion-Class Striker Variant. It's one of the more powerful Cruiser-Class Spacecraft." Kris said while tilting his head, and Mike stared at then blankly.

"Huh?" He blinked, and Theresa sighed, used to his obliviousness.

"Simply put, it's one of the stronger types of spacecraft. A single one can cost hundreds of billions of credits, and that's just after its base production. Further enhancements can easily raise the price to up to a trillion." Hearing this, Mike froze as he looked at her with wide eyes.

"A Trillion?! Why?!" He failed to keep his voice down, causing many people to shoot him dirty looks, but he didn't care as he stared at his friends with wide eyes.

He'd never held more than 50,000 credits in his entire life, and now he was being told that a spacecraft that was just sitting there in the distance could cost up to a Trillion credits?

"Well, it uses an extremely advanced version of the dark matter engine. So despite its size, it can easily move faster than most spacecraft. Moreover, you see those weapon batteries?" Theresa pointed at one of the many large cannons on the thing's surface, and Mike nodded.

"Those are powered by dark matter. Extremely pure versions of it too. I don't know how it's made. What I do know is that a single shot from any of those is enough to destroy a planet the size of Neptune. It's often seen as a fleet destroyer as a single one is more valuable than a few normal space fleets. That's how insane it is." She finished with a slightly exasperated sigh, like even she couldn't help but wonder how such an unbelievable thing could exist.

'A single one could destroy a planet...?' Mike thought with shock and a bit of terror. There were at least a dozen such guns on the thing, and you mean to tell him that each of those can output that much power? No wonder it's so expensive...' Mike frowned.

'Also, now that I think about it, there are ability users who can also destroy planets with relative ease. I wonder if I can do that eventually...'

Mike's thoughts were interrupted when the group was led into a large warehouse-like building.

As soon as they entered, everyone's eyes widened when they saw what was within.

Rows upon rows of armor, weapons, and all sorts of other equipment could be seen inside display cases and transparent pods.

"Welcome to the armory, everyone."

"Waah!!!"

Joseph's sudden appearance caught more than a few students off-guard, making many yelp in startled surprise.

They couldn't be blamed, though. One moment, they were admiring the view, and the next moment, their apparently sadistic Vice-Principal was standing in front of them with that signature smile of his.

"Great to see you too!" He said cheerfully and clapped his hands together.

"Now, as much as staring at each other's faces is fun, we have more important things to do." He raised a finger and twirled it around, gesturing to the surrounding equipment.

"You see every year has its own personal armory. Why? Well, things happen, and sometimes, students may need to be sent out to accomplish tasks in the name of the school. Hence, the school provides the equipment for them to use.

Seeing as you lot will be sent to a planet full of bloodthirsty monsters that could potentially kill you, the board decided it would be a great idea to give you equipment. Especially since the vast majority don't have jack in the way of usable equipment." He turned and spread his arms.

"All the equipment here is meant to be around your levels. So there's nothing overpowered, but it will all serve you well. And before we depart, you shall pick what you want." He turned back to them and held up five fingers.

"Five items. Including a set of armor and a weapon, or weapons, depending on whether you dual-wield or not. That's how many things you can take with you. So pick wisely. Oh, and don't try to be smart and carry more than 5 things. Trust me, we will know, and you won't be very happy to know the consequences." And with that, he vanished again.

'That wasn't teleportation. He really was just that fast...' Mike thought, his instincts picking up on faint distortions in the air caused by something moving through it rapidly.

That said, knowing about it wouldn't change anything. If Joseoh wanted to attack him, he wouldn't even know how he died.

"Well... I guess we go and grab what we want?" Mike offered.

"Yeah... Go ahead. I have an idea what I want." Theresa nodded and walked away without a word.

Kris also gave Mike a slight nod before walking away, leaving Mike alone.

Mike shrugged and turned. He gave his instincts free rein as he walked around to find something that suited him.

He first went over to where the weapons were, and this is where most of the students also were.

Each weapon was inside a display case, and below it was a screen that was a brief entry about the weapon.

The first case Mike stopped at held a long glaive, its silvered blade etched with faint wave-like patterns. The screen beneath it read

[Tidebreaker Glaive]

Forged with alloy tempered in high-pressure currents. Designed for wide arcs and battlefield control. Requires precise timing to unlock full momentum.

Mike tilted his head, admiring the craftsmanship, but it wasn't what he needed.

A few steps down, a heavy crossbow sat propped inside another case, its limbs made of some sleek black composite. The entry flickered.

[Ironfang Crossbow]

Compact siege design capable of piercing beast hide. High draw weight demands superior arm strength. Comes with an adjustable magazine for rapid reloads.

Useful, sure, but it didn't stir anything in him.

Mike appreciated them as he walked, letting his eyes drift over the polished weapons without lingering. He wasn't after reach or range, he knew that much.

He rounded the corner and found the section set aside for gauntlets. And almost immediately, he saw something that caught his eye.
