Nightblade (Darkest night)

Chapter 122: Paranormal detectives

‎Just like Northern Trendor, the continent where Eden City was located, Zolaris had four seasons all year round.

‎The only difference lay in the fact that winter in Zolaris was considerably warmer.

‎ And that was why, despite the fact that it had snowed the previous night, the snow that had piled up was already melting and the warm afternoon sun was blazing in the afternoon sky.

‎The Zolarian branch of the Praesagius had already provided for Norvax and his group's lodgings, courtesy of Aisha. I know that the fact that they were investigating the Crows was out; there was no point in them sneaking around. which was why this time Norvax and Alissa visited the former crime scenes that the Crows were involved in.

‎Paranormal crime scenes were often mysteries to the mundane enforcers of the law. You two that unique nature of the abilities that that talented welded, at times it was quite difficult for ordinary police to discover useful clues due to inconsistencies in the evidence.

‎A seasoned pyrokinetic could easily raze all traces of evidence tying him to a crime to the ground without using any mundane equipment.

‎In case the crime was somehow linked to them, then there was no substantial evidence tying them to the crime scene. And therefore, in the long run, the police would have to let them go due to a lack of evidence.

‎Needless to say, dealing with paranormal criminals was quite the headache.

‎which was why the upper echelons of Zolaris' finest were in the know about the existence of paranormal beings within their City, and the times invited the Zolarian branch of Praesagius to lend a hand, especially in the event of such uncanny events.

‎So in a sense, Norvax and Alissa were playing the role of paranormal detectives today.

‎Conveniently enough, Jeff also happened to be the head of investigations concerning paranormal crimes at the local branch, which walked out in the group's favor.

‎Unfortunately, during the raid, several of his colleagues had been killed by the cross, which left the available manpower severely lacking.

‎Of course, reinforcements remained nearby, a few blocks away under Jeff's capable command, in case anything unexpected happened.

‎Currently, they stood in an abandoned warehouse in the middle of the less savoury parts of the city.

‎Armed with fake badges complete with the necessary search warrant from the local police department, the two had confidently made their way into the warehouse.

‎After glancing at the badges, the warehouse security had not bothered the two, allowing them to enter the premises without much fuss. The warehouse was scheduled for demolition by the city council. Apparently, they plan to build a new luxurious neighborhood in the area, the head of the guards informed them in a matter-of-fact tone.

‎"In case you need any assistance will be right outside one of the guards said with a smile.

‎Norvax nodded lightly, tipping his hat at the man.

‎Alidsa spared him an amused glance, then focused on the warehouse before them.

‎Piles of crates were neatly piled up along the walls of the warehouse in several rows according to a unique classification.

‎A musky smell lingered in the air, and a sickly sweet scent of rot permeated the entire place.

‎Wrinkling his nose in disgust, Norvax calmly placed a handkerchief across his face. The warehouse had evidently been out of commission for a long period of time.

‎A slight frown appeared on his face, his lips curling up in evident distaste.

‎" Say, did someone die here? What the hell is this smell?"

‎Alissa grinned at the remark, calmly shaking her head.

‎" That's what we're here to find out."

‎She stamped lightly on the cracked concrete beneath their feet.

‎" Feels solid enough.

‎Her gaze swept over the warehouse, searching intently for clues.

‎"And you're one hundred percent sure that this is the right place?"

‎Alissa glared at him briefly, then turned away with a sigh.

‎" Of course. My informant led me here."

‎" Well, why don't you just ask your 'informant' again? I'm certain that'd be much faster."

‎Alissa frowned slightly.

‎" From what I can tell, the Crows go to Great lengths to keep any information from leaking out. That's why right now there is some sort of interference.

‎Norvax turned to her, surprise flashing across his face.

‎" What is that supposed to mean? Are you trying to say that there is an ability or something of some sort that's preventing you from effectively using your clairvoyant power?"

‎Alissa nodded, her hand drifting subconsciously to the gun holstered at her hip.

‎Norvax 's vigilance instantly skyrocketed, his eyes flaring with light instantly.

‎He stood poised, ready to react to any attack from any part of the warehouse at a moment's notice.

‎When no attack came, he let out a weary sigh.

‎Swiftly tapping his comlink, Norvax tried to radio the reinforcements hidden away.

‎Alissa's eyes narrowed in thought, then a split second later, widened in surprise.

‎" Wait!"

‎Norvax turned to her, a quizzical look on his face.

‎" What's the matter? What's happening?"

‎Alissa quietly shook her head, stepping closer to Norvax.

‎" If the Crows truly planned this, then if we radio the reinforcements they'll simply walk into a trap."

‎Norvax gasped, his eyes widening in realization, then face-palmed.

‎"That makes sense."

‎Alissa nodded, continuing the search for clues.

‎"At least this way, we'll force them to reveal their cards first if this is a trap," she thought.

‎" What was this place used for before?" Norvax mused aloud.

‎"Well, Alissa's plan is quite effective," he thought, furtively glancing around the place.

‎" So far, there've been no other signs of enemies. But then, that can changeat any moment now at the drop of a hat."

‎It was the only plausible explanation for Alisa failing to use her powers. Unless, of course, there was something that naturally existed within the space that could tamper with Talented's abilities. But feeling his own abilities course through him, he quickly ruled that out. What was in these crates before they were emptied he asked, prying open one of the stacked crates.

‎A short while later, Alissa's voice echoed back from behind a particularly large pile of empty crates.

‎" From the labels, it's Fish...and other seaside merchandise."

‎Norvax's eyes widened in surprise, staring at the label on one of the cans.

‎The script on the metallic tin was neatly written in a distinctly different language.

‎" What the hell? You can speak Zolarian?"

‎Alissa shrugged nonchalantly.

‎" I'm a language enthusiast and I'm pretty good at learning new stuff."

‎Norvwx sarcastically rolled his eyes, then grinned.

‎" Good for you. Have you found anything yet?"

‎" Nope!"Alissa's voice echoed back after a few moments.

‎Norvax casually kicked over a crate, his brows knitting together in contemplation.

‎"Perhaps it's the fish. You think they fed your informant to the fish?"

‎Alissa frowned slightly at the suggestion, her lips curling up in disgust.

‎"He never mentioned anything of the sort. Only that we should look in the warehouse."

‎" Well, couldn't he have been a little more specific?"

‎Alissa groaned, shaking her head.

‎"My ability is not as straightforward as it sounds. While the Dead don't particularly lie, they're not always as forthcoming as you would want them to be." Have you tried using your ability yet? I know that you are still exhausted from using it yesterday, but if you're able to use it now, it would save us precious time and would also allow us to know the limit of this interference.

‎Alissa let out a weary sigh, shaking her head.

‎"All right, fine, I'll try and use it right now."

‎A moment later, her eyes glowed eerily, one of them ablaze with an alluring green light, the other with a strange obsidian light. Within moments, the temperature within the room plummetted. Alyssa groaned slightly, a slight frown forming on her face from the strain of resisting the interference. Any luck, Norvax asked anxiously.

‎A layer of frost spread across the floor, creeping up onto the damaged wood of the rotting crates on the floor.

‎"He's here." Well then, what is he saying? Norvax asked impatiently.

‎Alissa's pointer gesturing at the floor.

‎"It's underground."

‎What? The glow in her eyes slowly faded

‎The thing they were looking for, he says it's underground. Well, that could have saved us some time. All along, we've been searching for the kids, and what we actually need has been lying right beneath our noses. So, how do you think we're going to get a hold of this thing? No idea, Alissa said. Then, I think we're going to have to call in Jeff and probably someone with an ability that can reach through the floor. Wait, can't you use your ability to forcefully rip through the concrete? "I'll give it a shot, but don't expect much," Alissa said.

A moment later, her eyes glowed once more. Inhaling deeply, she gritted her teeth.

" Here goes nothing."

Dazzling grin energy materialized in the air, forming a 5 metre long jagged shaft that stretched up to the warehouse ceiling

With a snarl, Alissa forcefully plunged it into the concrete floor .

"Well that's not exactly what I had in mind but I guess it will have to work, Norvax's thought in amusement.
