The Tempting Road to Becoming an Official

Chapter 546

Guyang City Detention Center entrance.

A police car slowly made its way inside.

Chen Fang, handcuffed, was escorted down from the vehicle.

The officers from Wulan City Public Security Bureau formally handed Chen Fang over to the detention center guards.

After undergoing a physical examination in the medical office, Chen Fang had his belt and shoelaces taken away and was dressed in a red vest.

From now on,

he was a criminal suspect in custody.

On the way from the medical office to his cell,

Chen Fang's mood was indifferent.

Suddenly, the young guard next to him whispered, "Secretary Chen, I'm the person arranged by Director Pei, if you have any messages, I can help you get them out."

Chen Fang was startled.

He smartly squatted down.

The guard looked around and pretended to scold, "What are you doing, stand up."

"Officer, I have a stomachache."

Chen Fang also took the opportunity to glance around.

The young guard squatted down as well, and Chen Fang whispered something to him during this moment.

After that,

the guard forcibly pulled him up from the ground.

And placed him into cell 1012 in block one.

There is a big difference between a detention center and a prison.

Although both are places for detaining people, prisons are for incarcerating convicted criminals, meaning those who have already been sentenced.

The detention center, on the other hand, detains suspects who haven't been tried and convicted yet.

There is a significant distinction between the two.

Additionally, the living environment is very different.

In a detention center, it's mainly large communal sleeping areas, with a walkway on the side for moving around. During normal circumstances, a dozen or so detainees would all sit cross-legged on the floor, and most of the time, they either wait for interrogation, meet with lawyers or go to court. The rest of the time is spent learning the detention rules and regulations.

After entering the cell,

Chen Fang's handcuffs were removed.

A thick-browed, big-eyed guy immediately stood up.

He walked over to Chen Fang and demanded, "Why are you here?"

Without saying anything, it was clear that this man was the head of the cell.

Chen Fang ignored him and walked to the back of the communal area, just about to take off his shoes to sit down.

The guy grabbed at Chen Fang and asked, "I'm talking to you, what are you in for, what's your name?"

"Is it any of your business?"

Chen Fang retorted.

"Oh, got quite the temper, eh? I like people with a temper; they present a challenge. Let me introduce myself. My name is Zhu Biao, but they all call me Big Brother Biao. From now on, you're going to stand as a punishment until your temper cools down, then we can have a proper talk," Zhu Biao commanded arrogantly.

"Stand as a punishment? Why?"

Chen Fang asked.

Zhu Biao sneered and said, "Kid, I don't care what you did outside, but in this room, you damn well listen to me. If I tell you to stand, you stand; what's with all the 'why'?"

"Sorry, I'm tired; I don't want to stand!"

Chen Fang replied and proceeded to take off his shoes, stepping onto the bunk to sit cross-legged.

"Oh, quite the thorn in my side, huh? Fine, you won't stand, right? Then I'll make sure you get a good 'lie down.' Guys, it's lesson time."

Zhu Biao gave the order.

Four or five guys on the bunk stood up in unison.

They flocked directly toward Chen Fang.

Each one looking at Chen Fang as if they were ready to tear him apart.

"Are you going to stand or not?"

Zhu Biao asked again.

Chen Fang glanced around at everyone and said, "I'm in a bad mood, all of you stay away from me."

"Yo, quite the big talker, eh? Guys, get moving!"

Seeing that Chen Fang didn't regard him at all,

The four or five men surged forward at once.

It's important to know that space in a detention center isn't extensive; even if one has good fighting skills, there's no room to utilize them.

Chen Fang knocked down two men in a row, only to be firmly pressed down on the bunk by another from behind. Seeing this, several others piled on as well, and with all of their weight, not even Chen Fang could break free.

He was quickly subdued.

At Zhu Biao's command, a barrage of punches and kicks rained down on him.

Chen Fang soon became utterly exhausted.

Black and blue marks covered his body; he was just as Zhu Biao had said, without the strength even to stand.

Chen Fang writhed in pain on the bunk.

Zhu Biao placed his foot on Chen Fang's cheek and said proudly, "I told you before, once you enter these doors, you have to listen to me. If I tell you to go east, don't you dare go west. Otherwise, you're going to have a rough time in this cell for months to come."

There were nearly twenty people in the cell.

When Chen Fang was being beaten, these men were angry but dared not speak out.

No one dared to say a word in defense of Chen Fang.

The beating was one thing.

Zhu Biao even withheld meals from Chen Fang.

By evening, when the cell's dinner was brought in, Chen Fang, who had been hungry for quite some time, didn't get a single grain of rice. It seemed Zhu Biao was determined to make him submit.

Night fell.

Everyone else laid down to sleep.

Zhu Biao wouldn't let Chen Fang sleep, making him stand guard instead.

As everyone else was sleeping soundly,

Chen Fang took off his red vest, twisted it into a rope, approached Zhu Biao, and tightened it around Zhu Biao's neck.

A sense of suffocation woke Zhu Biao instantly.

Unable to move his neck, Zhu Biao could only desperately scratch at Chen Fang, who, disregarding everything, kept a tight grip on Zhu Biao's neck. His lackeys were unable to pry Chen Fang's hands away and resorted to beating and kicking him. Eventually, Chen Fang couldn't hold on any longer and let go of the red vest.

It was only then that Zhu Biao managed to sit up, coughing violently.

It took him a good ten minutes or more

to recover from the shock.

Still not satisfied,

he kicked Chen Fang on the ground several more times to vent his frustration.

"Damn it, you're really asking for it. If you dare to touch me again, I swear I'll kill you," he said.

Seeing Chen Fang on the ground without the strength to even move,

Zhu Biao, shaken, finally climbed into bed.

But just as he was drifting off to sleep, another crippling wave of suffocation hit him.

Opening his eyes, he saw Chen Fang's bloodshot eyes staring back at him, the red vest once again wrapped around his neck.

His lackeys had to beat and kick Chen Fang again before he was thoroughly subdued.

After facing a second wave of mortal threat,

Zhu Biao dared not sleep any longer.

He lay on the bunk, watching Chen Fang curled up on the floor. At this point, a sense of fear was gradually building inside him.

Yet, he could not resist the pull of sleep.

As dawn was approaching, Zhu Biao once again drifted off into a fitful slumber.

Snoring filled the cell.

Chen Fang on the ground suddenly opened his eyes.

Using his hands for support, he unsteadily stood up.

He picked up his red vest, was wrapping it around his wrist when he looked up to find Zhu Biao sitting on the bunk, staring at him with wide-open eyes.

At that moment, Chen Fang was ready to face another round of beating,

but to everyone's surprise, Zhu Biao got down off the bunk and knelt in front of Chen Fang with a sobbing voice, "Bro, I was wrong, I was so wrong. I won't mess with you again. Please let me off, will you? From now on, you're the boss of this cell. I'll listen to whatever you say. Is that okay...?"

It's true: the soft fear the hard, the hard fear the fierce, the fierce fear the reckless, and the reckless fear those who have nothing to lose.

Zhu Biao at best could be considered fierce.

After a whole night of struggle,

he was truly terrified by Chen Fang.

In the following week,

Chen Fang's life significantly improved.

Zhu Biao would yell at everyone else but he became very respectful towards Chen Fang.

During this time, Chen Fang gradually learned about Zhu Biao as a person.

More importantly, he had an unexpected gain.

Zhu Biao, 36 years old, was a well-known thug in Guyang City. Known for his loyalty, he had a group of underlings, and in Guyang City's "underworld," he also had some fame.
