Chapter 86 Xu Lin's Guqin Learning Xia Xiyao: Let Me Be Impulsive Once

"I'm just learning for fun."

Xu Lin took the guqin out of its case.

This guqin was something he bought online for over thirty thousand. Xu Lin wasn't short on money now, so he could afford things worth tens of thousands; besides, how to put it when it comes to musical instruments? If you can buy an expensive one, you might as well do it, otherwise the quality really won't cut it.

Just like with guitars, there are those for a few hundred and those for thousands or tens of thousands.

The guqin Xu Lin had now wasn't lacking in quality.

He opened the case, took out the guqin, and placed it on the included antique wooden table.

When you buy a guqin, especially one over thirty thousand, things like tables and chairs, tassels, and incense burners naturally come included.

Xu Lin set everything up one by one.

After placing the guqin on the table, Xu Lin carefully examined this guqin.

In terms of craftsmanship, it was definitely finely crafted.

As for the materials, the Yueshan used rosewood, and for the Pongyin, they used old pine wood from the Ming and Qing dynasties, the tuning pegs were made of rosewood, and so on.

Actually, looking at it, the colors all seemed the same, after all, the varnish was like that, somewhat similar to a dark walnut color, but the texture of the guqin worth over thirty thousand was very good, looking shiny and bright.

The guqin Xu Lin had was the Zhongni style, which was actually named after Confucius. In early Confucian teachings, Confucian disciples were said to be skilled in both literature and military arts, proficient in qin, chess, calligraphy, and painting.

Rites, music, archery, charioteering, calligraphy, mathematics, were compulsory courses for Confucian disciples.

And guqin was a compulsory instrument for Confucian disciples.

The Zhongni style became a type of guqin, along with other styles like Fuxi and Hundun.

Xu Lin didn't really understand the differences between these three types of guqins.

In his view, it was good enough; he wasn't playing it professionally, or planning to immerse himself in guqin for a lifetime.

"Xu Lin, why did you suddenly want to play the guqin?"

Rong Xiyi came over and plucked a few strings with her hand, and immediately, the sound of 'deng deng' arose.

Just seven strings, seven notes, and the sounds were slightly different.

"It's called a hobby."

He used a tuner to adjust the sound a bit.

Then Xu Lin opened up short videos, intending to learn by watching a few high-quality guqin instructional short videos.

As for the included manual, there was no point in looking at it; reading it was like not reading it at all. It was better to watch experts teach.

"Xu Lin, quickly teach me how to play!"

Rong Xiyi was getting into the mood.

"I don't even know how to play yet, what should I teach you?"

"Yaoyao, do you know how to play?"

"No, I don't know either."

Xia Xiyao and Rong Xiyi sat on the long bench in front of the guqin, both girls curious and trying to figure it out.

"Yaoyao, in the TV shows, people play like this, right?"

Rong Xiyi began plucking the strings with her right index finger.

The guqin has seven strings, corresponding to 5612356, and in ancient terms, they are called Hui, Yu, Gong, Shang, Jiao, Hui, Yu.

But Rong Xiyi, playing the guqin, was just messing around, since she actually knew nothing about guqin.

Xia Xiyao was the same.

Rong Xiyi sat next to Xia Xiyao, pretending to play seriously, but the sounds coming from the guqin were quite chaotic.

"Yaoyao, do I look like a fairy when I'm playing?"

Rong Xiyi sat upright and serious, both hands moving over the strings, her expression one of focus.

Xia Xiyao covered her mouth and laughed, "You don't look like a fairy, but you do look a bit alluring!"

"Yaoyao!"

"That's what you get for wearing this outfit!"

Xia Xiyao laughed out loud.

Today, Rong Xiyi was only wearing a vest and panties, with a vest that exposed a V-shaped area, sitting in front of the traditional guqin, she looked out of place. At the very least, she should wear something like a hanfu or a women's Tang suit.

"Yaoyao, you're just as bad! Watch me spank you!"

Rong Xiyi gave Xia Xiyao a pat on the butt. She was in a short-sleeved top and ultra-short shorts.

Xia Xiyao didn't mind, "Anyway, I'm not a fairy!"

"Hmph!" Rong Xiyi snorted, and continued tinkering with the guqin together with Xia Xiyao.

But both of them knew nothing about the guqin, couldn't play, and were just playing randomly, so after a while, they felt bored. Musical instruments can be really boring; learning them takes lots of time, and the process is quite dull.

"It's my turn, you two make some room."

Before long, Xu Lin had already watched several guqin instructional short videos. Although they were all basic level lessons, for Xu Lin, they were enough.

Entry-level instruction was meant to help him understand the basic operations of the guqin.

As for more advanced techniques, he needed to figure those out on his own.

But for Xu Lin, who inherently had great learning abilities, these things were not difficult.

First, he would figure out the basic stuff and then find a few classic guqin pieces to learn later on.

The two girls made way for Xu Lin.

Rong Xiyi originally wanted to sit next to Xu Lin, but he didn't want to be disturbed now.

How can you not take learning seriously?

Based on the videos he watched just now, Xu Lin learned that the guqin has three types of sounds: open sound, harmonics, and pressed sound.

Open sound is produced by plucking the strings with the right hand while the left hand does not press on the strings.

Harmonics are produced by lightly touching the nodes with the left hand while plucking the strings with the right hand.

Pressed sound is made by pressing the strings with the left hand while plucking with the right hand.

Each type of sound has its own characteristics; they produce different sounds and, when combined, can create a variety of rich and layered sound styles.

Thus, the issue arose. Despite only having seven strings, when combined, it gets really complex. So, guqin is easy to get into, but difficult to master.

However, for Xu Lin, none of this was a problem.

Xu Lin first familiarized himself with the seven strings, then began learning the three different sound types, starting with open sounds, followed by harmonics, and finishing with pressed sounds.
