The Magnificent Son-in-law

Chapter 88: Can't Tell Good From Bad

In Song Keren's office, a little girl about 1.2 meters tall stood in the corner with her head down, shyly looking at the police officers inside the room.

The little girl wore ragged clothes, her little hands and face were dirty, and her two shoes didn't even match, looking for all the world like a little beggar.

Before long, someone walked in carrying bread and bottled water, and handed them to the little girl.

As if starved, the little girl hastily stuffed the bread into her mouth without even saying thank you, making everyone in the room sigh with empathy.

When Xiao Feng arrived, Song Keren immediately came forward to greet him and pointed to the little girl in the corner, saying, "You should have seen her, right?"

Xiao Feng furrowed his brows, then nodded. Even though Song Keren had already explained the situation over the phone, seeing the little girl he'd met the previous night still filled him with a sense of strange curiosity.

"I didn't explain it clearly over the phone earlier, just go over the events carefully again. This sudden appearance of the little girl presents significant issues." Xiao Feng said in a low voice.

Song Keren glanced at the people inside the room, "Let's talk outside."

Once outside, Song Keren explained, "She was found outside the police station at seven in the morning. Later, we reviewed the surveillance footage and discovered that an old lady had brought her here at four in the morning and left us a letter."

"Where's the letter?" Xiao Feng asked.

Song Keren pulled a crumpled piece of paper from his pocket and handed it to Xiao Feng. The words on it were mostly replaced by pinyin, revealing the low literacy level of the writer.

The letter briefly described the little girl's situation: her parents had died early, leaving her to live with her grandmother, who made a living by scavenging. The grandmother feared she might pass away suddenly, leading the granddaughter astray, so she had no choice but to hand her over to the police.

After waiting a while without hearing Xiao Feng's thoughts, Song Keren couldn't help but ask, "You just mentioned that the little girl presents significant issues, what do you mean?"

Xiao Feng looked as if he hadn't heard, still pondering the doubts within. Last night, after sensing danger, the little girl appeared and then went to the abandoned building. Zhao Xingfeng had mentioned he would go there this morning, but instead, the little girl appeared at the police station doors at dawn.

When these events were connected, there seemed to be no flaws, yet Xiao Feng still felt something was off. It all boiled down to one thing: the girl's appearance was too coincidental!

Seeing Xiao Feng ignoring her, Song Keren became frustrated and asked sharply, "I'm talking to you! What's the issue with that little girl?"

Xiao Feng considered and explained, "You've learned some martial arts too, you should know that practitioners have a much sharper sense of danger than ordinary people."

"That's true, but let me correct you, I've learned martial arts not just for a few days, but since childhood," Song Keren said earnestly.

"Learning since childhood and reaching this level, it's nothing to brag about," Xiao Feng countered bluntly, then shifted the topic and recounted the events at the abandoned building to Song Keren.

After listening to Xiao Feng's account, Song Keren couldn't even bother to argue with him and said with a slightly serious expression, "It does seem a bit unusual when you put it that way."

"What do you plan to do with this little girl next?" Xiao Feng asked.

"We definitely can't keep her at the station forever. I intend to contact a welfare institution to see who can take her in; that would be ideal," Song Keren replied. "But before the paperwork is completed, unfortunately, she'll have to stay with us."

Xiao Feng pondered for a moment and then suddenly said, "Here's an idea: say we're going to send her directly to a welfare institution and observe Miao Youmin's reaction."

"You suspect the girl is connected to Miao Youmin?" Song Keren furrowed her brows.

"It's not Miao Youmin I'm suspicious of, but Shen Group and Shen Tianze," Xiao Feng explained. "After they sent Fang Ji Qiang to assassinate me and were exposed, I started hitting Shen Group's venues heavily—the losses from just these two days amounted to over five million."

"Considering this point, if there's anyone who most wants me dead right now, it's undoubtedly Shen Group."

"Makes sense!" Song Keren nodded, then couldn't resist worrying, "You should be careful moving forward. If Shen Group really decides to go all out…"

"Then Shen Group would disappear, and those four words would at most become a symbol in Jiangcheng's development history," Xiao Feng said lightly.

"When will you learn to distinguish between good words and bad ones?" Song Keren gave him a sideways glance. Obviously it was meant as a concerned note, how did it end up sounding all wrong?

Xiao Feng waved his hand, "Let's not talk about that. The most pressing thing right now is..."

While speaking, he reached into his pocket.

Song Keren said with a darkened face, "You're asking for your travel expenses to be reimbursed, right?"

"Smart!" Xiao Feng took out the receipt from his pocket, but in the next moment, they both froze!

What the heck!

Xiao Feng's eyes widened as he saw two matchbox-sized packages behind the receipt, labeled 'ultra-thin,' 'glow-in-the-dark,' along with a string of English letters...

The situation turned weird all at once.

Song Keren suddenly remembered that when Zhao Xingfeng reported to her, he mentioned Xiao Feng had left first with a drunk beauty.

Xiao Feng couldn't understand how such items ended up in his pocket when he hadn't bought them.

Instantly, he thought of the taxi driver from last night outside the hotel, who said he'd give him a little something and stuffed it directly into his pocket.

"Ahem, this was handed out during the cab ride," Xiao Feng touched his nose, trying awkwardly to explain.

Yet after speaking, he realized the excuse was hardly believable. Do cabs really give out these things?

But the issue was, this was indeed the case!

Seeing Song Keren's eyes blazing with anger, Xiao Feng wished he could call the taxi driver over to beat him up. At this point, even jumping into the Yellow River wouldn't wash this away.

"I didn't think you were this kind of person." Song Keren said coldly, then looked at the receipt before taking five hundred yuan from her wallet and slapping it onto Xiao Feng.

"Wait a minute!" Xiao Feng grabbed Song Keren, "What do you mean by calling me this kind of person? Tell me, what kind of person am I?"

Song Keren smiled, "Is there really a need to spell it out? And, talking's one thing, but let go of my hand."

"I know you don't believe me, I'll call that taxi driver from last night now and ask him to come over for a face-to-face." Xiao Feng found the business card the driver had left and was about to dial the number.

Seeing Xiao Feng really make the call, Song Keren couldn't help but wonder. Could she have truly misunderstood?

However, she still managed to say coldly on the surface, "Is it necessary to confront? I'm no one to you, your lifestyle habits don't concern me."

"What you say also makes sense." Xiao Feng hesitated before speaking into the phone, "Sorry, never mind, you don't need to come over."

Song Keren stood there speechless for a long while before saying, "You probably didn't call at all, did you?"

"Didn't you say it's not your concern?" Xiao Feng replied puzzled, "Calling the driver over costs cab fare, do I have money to waste?"
