The Magnificent Son-in-law

Chapter 68: Family Feast or Feast of Doom?

"Bang, bang, bang..."

Following a series of footsteps, Jiang Yixin's figure appeared at the stairway, and she immediately switched on the lights.

The chandelier lit up, causing temporary blindness. Xiao Feng looked toward the stairway and found that Jiang Yixin didn't seem like she had just woken up.

In fact, Xiao Feng's judgment was correct. Jiang Yixin had been tossing and turning on bed, unable to sleep.

Thinking back and forth, Jiang Yixin felt that the root cause of her insomnia lay in the word "habit."

Habit can really be a scary thing sometimes.

Lately, Jiang Yixin used to argue with Xiao Feng before sleeping, but suddenly one day she found that the person she used to argue with was gone, leaving her feeling empty inside, as if something was missing.

So, Jiang Yixin thought of going downstairs to take a look, but as soon as she turned on the lights, she saw not only Du Qingyue was in the living room, but also Xiao Feng, the main culprit of her insomnia.

"Why aren't you guys sleeping and sitting in the living room with the lights off?" Jiang Yixin questioned.

"Does it concern you?" Xiao Feng replied brusquely.

Jiang Yixin furrowed her brow, swiftly entering battle mode: "You..."

But she was interrupted at the start by Du Qingyue, who said, "Yixin, it's so late, why did you come down?"

Jiang Yixin was momentarily speechless. She couldn't possibly say she came to see whether Xiao Feng had returned.

That would be too easy to misunderstand.

Say she went to the bathroom?

That wouldn't work either, since there was a bathroom upstairs, no need to go downstairs.

After thinking a while, Jiang Yixin finally found a suitable reason: "I was thirsty, came down to get a drink."

Saying that, she walked to the fridge, took out a bottle of drink, and stood at the stairway: "Um... should I turn off the lights again?"

For some reason, when she asked this question, Jiang Yixin felt a strange discomfort in her heart.

"No need, you go rest now." Du Qingyue replied calmly: "Drink less at night, too much can affect sleep."

"Okay, you rest early too." Jiang Yixin responded, then quickly walked upstairs.

After Jiang Yixin left, Du Qingyue quickly said, "Let's talk business. Tomorrow, or rather today, at noon, accompany me home."

"Sure, just don't know if it's a family banquet or an ambush." Xiao Feng agreed readily.

"Whatever kind of banquet it is, we still have to go." Du Qingyue said seriously.

If possible, she wouldn't want to return to the Du Family.

Although she is nominally a lady of the Du Family, it is all utilitarian and cold, with not a hint of warmth, how could it be called home?

But there is no way, birth offers no choice, even if unwilling, Du Qingyue must return.

In the Du Family Manor, a discussion meeting was enthusiastically underway.

The dozen or so attendees were all important members of the Du Family, including Du Linlang.

Although sitting in the last position, she's the only junior present.

Her presence at such a level of meeting shows her prestige in the family, already far exceeding Du Qingyue.

"Most of what needs to be said has been said, I hope you all can do what needs to be done." Du Qingyun said with slight fatigue: "As always, even if nothing can be probed out, do not incur Xiao Feng's displeasure."

For the Du Family members, Xiao Feng now carries a huge question mark, like a mystery to be unraveled by everyone's concerted efforts.

And before the mystery is unveiled, everyone must be cautious and discreet.

After the meeting ended, everyone returned to their residences to rest, while the father-daughter pair of Du Feixiang and Du Linlang stopped as they passed the pavilion.

"The situation is starting to look bleak." Du Feixiang sat by the stone table, sighed and said.

"Indeed!" Du Linlang's expression was also somewhat grave: "Grandpa's attitude today was quite off. So, it is certain, once the probing results come out tomorrow, if Xiao Feng turns out to be someone of significant stature, then the Lanyue Group will still belong to Du Qingyue."

"Do you think this Xiao Feng has a big background behind him?" Du Feixiang asked after a moment of silence.

"I feel like, now it's already not important." Du Linlang sneered: "With the methods Grandpa mentioned, is there any that can accurately probe Xiao Feng's background?"

"Even tomorrow when Xiao Feng arrives, even if he plainly says he's a nobody, would anyone believe it?"

Du Linlang rubbed her temples, speaking with some headache: "This time it's really tough, Grandpa's reminder to everyone is indeed for the development of the entire Du Family, but it imposed the idea to everyone that Xiao Feng must have significant lineage."

"If this idea isn't broken, then tomorrow's probing results are nothing but two possibilities: either ambiguous as it was, or it turns out Xiao Feng really has significant lineage."

"Either possibility is devastating for us."

Du Feixiang frowned: "Is there a possibility of a third result though? For instance, confirming Xiao Feng is truly just a nameless junior."

Though he asked, Du Feixiang clearly lacked confidence. The seemingly sure-win situation was altered by the sudden emergence of this Xiao Feng, which anyone would find hard to accept.

Unexpectedly, after a long silence, Du Linlang suddenly said, "Even if a third result can't occur, I'm not willing to just give up."

"What do you intend to do?" Du Feixiang was startled, feeling that his daughter's words contained a lot of underlying meaning.

Du Linlang's lips curled, forming a nice arc: "Do you remember the last method Grandpa mentioned?"

Du Feixiang's mind raced, then nodded: "Get Xiao Feng drunk and have him spill the truth."

"Right!" Du Linlang suddenly stood up, looking at the crescent moon that was about to vanish: "But what I meant is, although drunk might not spill the truth, it can achieve other things..."

Du Feixiang, realizing what his daughter intended to do, widened his eyes and said: "Linlang, don't act impulsively. If that Xiao Feng truly has a significant background, doing this will only lead you to disaster."

"A big shot?!" Du Linlang suddenly turned back, a hint of anger flashing in her eyes: "If Xiao Feng is a big shot, would he marry Du Qingyue? If Xiao Feng is a big shot, would Shen Tianze and Shen Group remain undefeated in Jiangcheng?"

Du Feixiang took a deep breath: "Even though these things are very questionable, until we see the final conclusion, we should still..."

"No need to advise me, this time, consider it a gamble." Du Linlang calmly shook her head, interrupting Du Feixiang: "I bet Xiao Feng is a complete nobody, with no background."

"Have you thought that if you lose this bet, what consequences you'll face?" Du Feixiang asked grimly.

He understood his daughter, and because of this understanding, he knew once Du Linlang said such words, it would be hard to change her mind.

"From childhood to now, in all aspects, I've always been better than Du Qingyue, in everything..." Du Linlang slowly turned around, looking up at the night sky where the crescent moon had disappeared.

The next moment, Du Linlang confidently said: "This time will be no exception either!"
