The Magnificent Son-in-law

Chapter 54: Assassination Attempt

Upon hearing this, Xiao Feng and Shi Jiaxin exchanged glances, realizing that amidst their conversation, they had unknowingly maintained a posture akin to an embrace from behind.

Shi Jiaxin's expression turned panicked, and she hurriedly freed herself from Xiao Feng's grasp, explaining with a flushed face, "Keren, don't misunderstand, I..."

Before finishing her sentence, Song Keren interrupted, "What's there to misunderstand? I don't have any relationship with him."

With that, she turned and walked away, leaving Xiao Feng and Shi Jiaxin staring wide-eyed at each other.

...

Dusk fell as Xiao Feng casually walked out of the police station.

As a consultant, he didn't need to adhere to the regular office hours of arriving and leaving at set times like the others.

Of course, this is understandable, after all, during the booming days of Pengiun Farms, even the NPCs demanded "no pay, no work."

If there isn't even pay, not allowing some freedom would indeed be quite unreasonable.

Xiao Feng flagged down a taxi; now that there's reimbursement, he naturally wouldn't want to walk back.

Upon returning to Residence No. 9, Xiao Feng entered the living room to find Du Qingyue and Jiang Yixin sitting on the sofa, both looking somewhat out of sorts.

"What's up with you two?" Xiao Feng asked in confusion.

Jiang Yixin frowned and replied, "This afternoon, the company held a board meeting, and after voting, they decided to dismiss you. Qingyue tried hard but couldn't change the decision."

"Oh." Xiao Feng nodded in understanding, and then asked, "Is that the reason you two are unhappy?"

"..." Jiang Yixin suddenly felt like laughing. She was fretting over this, yet he seemed to not care about it at all?

Du Qingyue shook her head, changing the topic, "Have you sorted out your matters?"

For her, whether Xiao Feng continued at Lanyue Group wasn't as important as the police affairs.

Xiao Feng replied with an air of ease, "It's all sorted, and I've even secured a position as a special consultant, so I'll be able to work at the police station in the future."

Jiang Yixin couldn't help but be shocked; could he really have such a significant background to suppress such a big issue?

Du Qingyue was equally surprised but, like Jiang Yixin, she didn't probe further; as long as the outcome was favorable, everyone has their own secrets.

Just then, the doorbell rang, and Xiao Feng got up and went outside. He saw a young man in a blue outfit holding a large bag, saying, "Mr. Xiao Feng? Your takeaway order, please sign for it."

Xiao Feng immediately became wary, knowing from Du Qingyue that ordering takeout was Jiang Yixin's task, and she never used a real name.

There must be something wrong!

Determined, Xiao Feng remained impassive and unhurriedly took the takeaway receipt and began signing it.

Just as he lowered his head, out of the corner of his eye, a cold glint flashed, and Xiao Feng quickly stepped back; looking down, he saw a dagger poised right in front of his heart.

The tall, slim man pretending to be a delivery guy looked surprised, seemingly not expecting Xiao Feng's quick reaction.

He soon recovered, trying to retract the dagger and flee by bike, but ideas are good while reality is harsh.

Comparatively, his speed was still lacking behind Xiao Feng's; with execution not matching his mental plan, he hadn't even managed to withdraw his hand from the gate before Xiao Feng grabbed him.

"Who sent you?" Xiao Feng asked coldly.

The slim man did not answer, merely struggling with all his might, yet no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't break free, only causing pain in his arm.

"Seems you're eager for some hardship." Xiao Feng nodded with a smile, snatching the dagger from the man's hand, "I'll ask you again, who sent you?"

As he spoke, the dagger was already at the man's neck.

Feeling the penetrating chill from the dagger, sweat began to bead on the man's forehead. He swallowed hard and nervously said, "Will you let me go if I tell you?"

"Depends on whether you're telling the truth." Xiao Feng replied coldly.

In fact, the man pretending to be the delivery guy was named Fang Ji Qiang, Shen Tianze's most capable subordinate.

Yet he wasn't as weak as he appeared; even someone who boxes or practices martial arts would find him formidable.

He just had poor luck, encountering someone like Xiao Feng, and immediately ended up kneeling after one exchange.

And, from the man's struggles earlier, Xiao Feng also concluded that he was stronger than the average practitioner's level.

After a while, Fang Ji Qiang seemed resigned and said, "The person who sent me to kill you is Chang Xinyan."

This was another scheme by Shen Tianze; he knew sending ordinary people over would likely fail to eliminate Xiao Feng.

Plus, fearing others might back down seeing his failure, he cleverly redirected it, first dragging Chang Xinyan into the mire.

"Chang Xinyan?" Xiao Feng pondered, "Who is that?"

Fang Ji Qiang answered, "The young master of Jiangcheng's Chang Family, a giant on par with Shen Group."

"Why would he want you to kill me though?" Xiao Feng asked confusedly; he didn't know who Chang Xinyan was.

"That I don't kno... I'll tell, I'll tell!" Fang Ji Qiang started speaking, but as the dagger got closer to his neck, he quickly changed his tune.

Xiao Feng stared into Fang Ji Qiang's eyes, waiting for him to speak.

Moments later, Fang Ji Qiang spoke, "There's a wealthy club in Jiangcheng where rich kids have set up a ten-billion-dollar betting pool; whoever kills you first gets all the stakes."

Xiao Feng frowned; he didn't doubt Fang Ji Qiang's claim was false, yet his actions seemed somewhat irrational.

For reasons unknown, Xiao Feng felt as if the man was deliberately trying to inform him of something.

If his speculations were real, someone might be deliberately steering him in a specific direction.

Just then, Fang Ji Qiang's voice interrupted his thoughts, "I've told you everything I know, can you let me go now?"

"No rush, how can I be sure you're not lying?" Xiao Feng said calmly.

"My life's in your hands now, isn't that reason enough?" Fang Ji Qiang argued anxiously.

Xiao Feng shook his head, still showing no intention of letting go.

Seeing Xiao Feng unwilling to let him go just like that, Fang Ji Qiang felt like crying, "Then what do you need to believe me?"

"That's a question you should be asking yourself." Xiao Feng replied naturally, "How can you convince me?"

Damn it!

Fang Ji Qiang felt like dying, and pleaded tearfully, "Everything I've told you is true."

"But I think you're lying, so you'd better think more carefully." Xiao Feng retorted relentless.

"..." Fang Ji Qiang took a deep breath, "I've said everything I can say, if you don't believe it, I can't do anything more."

Xiao Feng chuckled, "You should've said earlier, right? No options, huh? I'm never short on options. Here's the deal, I'll find a place for you to stay. Whenever you're ready to tell the truth, just notify me."

"What do you mean?" Fang Ji Qiang's heart skipped a beat, a sense of foreboding rose within him.
