Noah sat there, watching Miss Leslie fiddle through the inventory.
For his first run at the school's spell vault, he won't be taking too many spells. He'll take a few, then after mastering those, come back for more when he needs them.
He knew first hand how dangerous it was to be walking around with too many spell parchments. That was a mistake he wasn't keen on repeating. Especially with the new guests that would soon be arriving at the academy.
"So," Miss Leslie finally looked up, finished with her tinkering, "which affinity would you like to start with?"
Noah leaned forward, thinking about it. "Void affinity."
Miss Leslie nodded at his words, tapping for a few seconds before turning the screen to face him. "Here you go. Our available catalog of Void spells."
Noah adjusted himself on his seat, moving closer to the screen. He touched it, scrolling through the options from the lowest rank to the highest.
The sheer breadth of the Void spells took his breath away. He saw spells to fold distances, spells to teleport, and even spells to change the objects occupying a given space.
For example, there was a spell that removed the air in a radius around the caster, leaving the people caught in its area of effect to die from lack of oxygen.
There was another that simply identified the nearest body of fire, and swapped it with the air in a radius around the caster. Essentially, igniting the space around them in an instant.
This reminded Noah of something he'd read about. Different affinities can achieve the same effect, but in different ways.
A mage with fire affinity can just use a spell to conjure fire around themselves, but with the void affinity, they simply manipulate the space, swapping the atmosphere with fire supported by mana.
The spells arrayed before him were so enticing, he was tempted to just choose as many of them as possible. But he couldn't. 'No. I still have other affinities to go through.'
Then, he got to the S-rank section, and his eyes settled on the single spell sitting in the section. And in that moment, he knew he simply had to have it.
This was a spell that left no visible signs on the world, and was exactly what he needed.
[Pocket Cube - S-rank]
[Creates a 30 by 30 pocket of space that traps prey inside. Fixed to a single location, it cannot be breached from inside or outside, except when overwhelmed by a barrage of spells or a single higher ranked spell. Caster can enter and exit at will.]
Noah almost started salivating at what he could use it for. His own pocket of space, hidden on school grounds. From what he could see, the space would only be temporary, depending on the amount of mana he used, but it should be more than enough for what he wanted.
He tried to scroll higher, but that was the limit. The school only has a single S-rank Void spell, and no spell of higher rank.
Since he'd settled on getting at least two Void spells, he scrolled downward, looking for any spell he can add to his list.
Then, his eyes landed on the perfect spell.
[Null Stride - A-rank]
[The caster collapses their physical form, allowing them to hurl themselves through the void of space to be reconstituted at their chosen location. At the point of the caster's implosion, a small rift is opened, pulling anything in a six foot radius around the caster, and shredding it to nothingness. This effect can be controlled by the caster.]
With this spell, he wouldn't be constrained to a physical location anymore. He can go anywhere he wants without anybody knowing his movements. It was perfect.
And with the added effect, it meant that the spell can function as both an offensive and utility spell.
If he cancelled the effect, he could use the spell without opening the rift. But in battle, he could activate the rift, sucking his opponent into it, and taking care of them.
Of course, with it being a small rift, that also meant some opponents would be able to resist the gravity pull, based on their physical stats. That was something he could live with.
"Here." Noah turned the screen back to Miss Leslie. "I want Pocket Cube and Null Stride."
Miss Leslie's brows rose as she checked the details of the spells in question. "Are you sure? These are high ranked spells. You might not be able to use them now."
"I'm sure," Noah said with a smirk.
They didn't know of his S-rank mana capacity and magic control, and he was content to leave it at that. Even if they suspected, due to his racial effect, he could control what stats they saw in his status.
"It's better for me to have it and not be able to use it yet than for me to need it when I want and not have it."
"I see." Miss Leslie smiled. "You're saving it up for the future."
"Yes." Noah nodded.
"Then, I'll recommend you invest in a quality lockbox. Or an enchanted spatial ring. That way, you can keep the spell parchment on you and out of sight."
"I see." Noah nodded. He'll have to ask Professor Cecilia for one of those. "Thank you."
Miss Leslie merely nodded, focusing back on the screen. She selected the first spell, and the screen glowed before fading away, revealing a familiar darkness.
She reached inside the darkness, her hand slipping deeper in, before retrieving a spell parchment. She handed it to Noah, who held it with both hands.
The spell parchment was a deep, almost dark purple, with the complex spell formation on its surface glowing a bright purple. Noah could feel the void energy radiating from the parchment.
Without having to be told, he could tell this was the spell parchment for the A-rank Null Stride.
The parchment felt heavier in a way that was more than physical. Like there was an invisible stone sitting atop it.
"Here." Miss Leslie set the spell parchment for the S-rank Pocket Cube on the table, and the moment Noah laid his eyes on it, it took his breath away.
