Divine Emperor In Another World

Chapter 45: Episode 45 – The Monarch Awakens

Episode 45 – The Monarch Awakens

The staircase stretched downwards in silence. Not mist, not crimson water—just silence. Each step echoed like the toll of a bell, carrying weight deeper than stone.

For the first time since entering Norvahel's drowned labyrinth, the air felt empty. Too empty.

Kuro's emberlight eyes flickered uneasily, his hand resting on his emberblade as the group descended. Elira walked close, her frostfire glowing faintly as though even the air itself pressed against her chest. Behind them, Akira's katana tapped lightly against his side, and Reina's daggers spun between her fingers with restless grace.

Finally, the stairway ended in a vast chamber.

Unlike the others, this one wasn't jagged or broken—it was smooth, polished, carved in a circle. Runes of obsidian gleamed across the floor like veins of shadow, forming a vast sigil that pulsed with a heartbeat not their own.

And at the center stood a pedestal. Upon it lay something shrouded in shadowlight, its form indistinct, shifting like black flame.

[Seal Binding Condition: Monarch Candidate Required]

Kuro froze. His chest burned with the same emberlight that had guided him since the first Seal, but this time it wasn't just heat—it was pulling him.

"Elira," he muttered, his voice lower than a growl. "It's calling me."

Her violet eyes snapped toward him, wide with warning. "Careful. Things in Norvahel don't call to us—they consume us."

Reina narrowed her emerald gaze at the pedestal. "Then why does it look like it's waiting for him?"

Akira's hand went to his blade, tense. "Because it is."

---

The shadows thickened, pulsing. Words carved themselves into the stone beneath their feet, the labyrinth itself whispering:

"The Monarch must be clothed in night. The Monarch must wield death. Only then may the final Seal bend."

Kuro stepped forward, flame flickering faintly along his arms. The closer he moved, the heavier the chamber became—as if the air itself bent to the presence of the shrouded object.

The pedestal split open with a groan, revealing the armament inside.

A suit of armor—black as the void, trimmed with threads of silver fire. Its design was both regal and predatory, robes that flowed like liquid shadow, plated shoulders etched with runes, a cloak that shimmered like smoke.

And beside it, two daggers. Each forged of obsidian steel, edges glowing faintly with violet flame. Their shape was curved, like fangs.

Kuro staggered as the system's text burned across his vision.

Elira rushed forward, grabbing his arm. "What is it?!"

His breath came ragged, heat rippling off his body. "…It's… the Monarch's Armament."

Akira's brows furrowed. "And what does that mean, exactly?"

The shadows around the pedestal answered for him. They surged upward, wrapping around Kuro like chains. His body convulsed, emberlight blazing against the weight of shadow trying to swallow him.

Reina cursed. "He's being tested. Again!"

Elira's frostfire flared, but Kuro lifted a trembling hand, halting her. His emberlight eyes blazed, steady through the pain. "…No. This one's mine."

The shadows constricted. His body was dragged forward, forced into the armament. The cloak lashed around his shoulders, searing into his skin, the armor fusing to his chest like living fire. The daggers hissed in his hands, burning and freezing all at once.

The chamber echoed with a voice. Not the labyrinth's, not his father's, not anyone else's—his own voice, but deeper.

"Monarch of Darkness. To rule is to consume. To protect is to devour. Do you accept this fate?"

Kuro's heart pounded, blood roaring in his ears. He saw flashes—armies of shadow kneeling before him, Elira's frostfire dimming in his arms, Akira bleeding at his feet, Reina's smirk fading to dust.

He gritted his teeth, flame and frost clashing within him.

"No. I don't devour to rule. I devour to protect!"

The daggers pulsed in his grip, shadowlight flaring like thunder.

The shadows exploded outward.

Kuro's form stood in the center of the chamber, wreathed in his new Monarch cloak, the daggers gleaming in each hand. His emberlight eyes glowed fiercer than ever, twin orbs of fire in the dark. The cloak trailed behind him like liquid shadow, every step making the sigils on the ground bow with light.

Akira let out a low whistle. "…Well. If you weren't terrifying before, you sure as hell are now."

Reina smirked faintly, but her eyes lingered on him with something sharper than amusement. "…Looks like the labyrinth just crowned its king."

Elira's chest rose and fell, her frostfire dimming as her eyes locked on his. For a moment, she saw not just Kuro—the boy who had arrived broken and lost in her kingdom—but the man he was becoming.

Her lips parted softly. "…Kuro."

He looked at her, the shadows of his cloak flickering, but his voice was steady. "I'm still me."

The reassurance struck deeper than she expected. She nodded, her violet eyes softening. "…Then keep being you. No matter what this labyrinth tries to make you."

---

Before the moment could hold, the chamber trembled.

The runes around them lit up blood-red, the sigil flaring with power. From the walls, the shadows began to take form again—hundreds of them, faceless, armored, each dragging chains that rattled like thunder.

[System Alert: Labyrinth Guardian Awakening]

[Warning: Final Trial Sequence – Initiated]

Kuro twirled the twin daggers in his hands, the shadowflame licking across their edges. His new cloak billowed as if alive, whispering with voices from the abyss.

He exhaled slowly, a sharp grin flashing across his face. "…Perfect timing."

Akira slid his katana free, Reina spun her daggers, and Elira's frostfire burned brighter, wrapping her like a crown of light.

The chamber roared with awakening shadows.

Kuro stepped forward, his daggers crossed before him. His new Monarch skill pulsed in his veins, the promise of devouring their enemies to protect the ones beside him.

"Then let's show this labyrinth…" his emberlight eyes blazed, "…what happens when a Monarch rises."

The guardians screamed.

And the final battle began.
