Divine Emperor In Another World

Chapter 32: Episode 32: The Labyrinth of Forgotten Names

Episode 32: The Labyrinth of Forgotten Names

The throne hall shattered.

Pillars splintered into dust, the broken names carved upon them scattering into the void like ash. The last fragments of the Forgotten King dissolved into shadow, his crown sinking into the crimson abyss.

And then, silence.

Kuro stood at the epicenter, one eye burning golden emberlight, the other black as pitch. Elira's frostfire shielded him as the last waves of the collapse faded. Akira leaned heavily on his katana, breathing ragged.

They had survived. Barely.

But the ground beneath them shifted again.

The black floor uncoiled like ink, unfurling into a spiral descent. At its mouth yawned a tunnel of pure darkness, dripping like liquid night.

[System Alert: New Zone Activated]

[Designation: Labyrinth of Forgotten Names]

[Hazard Class: Absolute]

[Warning: Identity Distortion at Maximum Level]

Akira cursed under his breath. "…Because of course we're not done yet."

Kuro exhaled, his body trembling from the resonance still coursing inside him. Shadows whispered at the edge of his vision, clawing at his mind. But Elira's hand was still clutching his, steadying him.

He glanced at her. "You don't have to go deeper. Not if it targets you."

Her violet eyes hardened. "…If it targets me, then that's exactly why I have to."

She let go only to step forward first, frostfire flaring faintly around her frame. The Labyrinth awaited, silent and suffocating.

And so they descended.

---

The world changed instantly.

The moment they crossed the threshold, sound vanished. No footsteps, no breathing, no whispers. Only silence—absolute and oppressive. The air was heavy, thick like water. Every step felt slower, as though time itself resisted them.

The corridor stretched endlessly, walls lined with countless mirrors. But the reflections were not their own.

Kuro froze. In the mirrors, Elira appeared not as the woman beside him, but as countless versions of herself: crowned queen, bloodied warrior, broken prisoner, lifeless corpse. Each reflection stared at her with accusing eyes.

Akira spat quietly. "…I hate mazes."

[System Alert: Cognitive Trial Initiated]

[Primary Target: Elira Valenhart]

[Condition: Resist Fragmentation of Identity]

The words glowed across Kuro's vision. His fists clenched. "It's her trial…"

---

Elira's breathing quickened. Her violet eyes darted from reflection to reflection.

Each version of herself began to move, pounding against the mirror's glass. Their voices rose in unison, though their mouths didn't quite sync.

You failed.

You lost your throne.

You were never fit to be Queen.

You will always be your father's shadow.

The sound drilled into her skull. She staggered, clutching her head. Frostfire flared wildly from her body, threatening to consume the corridor.

"Elira!" Kuro lunged, grabbing her shoulders. The fire burned against his skin, but he held on.

Her eyes were wide, unfocused. "…They're right. Every version of me… failed."

"No!" Kuro's voice was fierce, his emberlight flaring. "They're not you. They're what this place wants you to believe!"

But the mirrors cracked, and the first doppelgänger stepped through—a Queen Elira, regal but twisted, crown of ice thorns and eyes hollow with power.

She raised a staff of frozen crystal. "…Weakness has no throne."

Frostfire speared toward them.

Kuro shoved Elira aside, his emberblade igniting in a wall of flame that clashed with the blast. The corridor shuddered under the impact, heat and frost colliding violently.

Akira darted in, slicing at another mirror as another doppelgänger tried to crawl through. "These copies are endless! What the hell's the trick here?!"

Kuro grit his teeth, blocking another strike. "They're not meant to be beaten—they're meant to break her!"

---

Elira was on her knees, trembling. Dozens of mirrors cracked now, each spilling another version of her into the hall:

A child Elira, crying with bloody hands.

A queen in chains.

A corpse bride.

A tyrant with fire wings blackened by ash.

Each one glared at her, shouting accusations.

"You're not worthy."

"You lost your people."

"You let your father die."

"You will betray him too."

Her breath hitched, tears burning her eyes. The frostfire around her spiraled wildly, threatening to freeze everything.

Kuro saw it—the Seal was tearing her apart from within.

[System Alert: Anchor Collapse 70% → 82%]

His jaw clenched. He couldn't let her be consumed.

He dropped his emberblade, grabbing her face between his hands, forcing her to look at him. His voice was raw, desperate, steady like fire in a storm.

"Elira. Hear me. You are not their chains. You are not their ghost. You are you. The one who stood against her father's shadow. The one who chose her own path. The one who—"

His words caught in his throat. He had never said it aloud before. But if there was ever a time, it was now.

"…The one who carries my fire."

Her trembling slowed. Her eyes widened.

The mirrors screamed, fracturing violently. Doppelgängers shrieked, their forms flickering.

Elira's frostfire flared again, but this time it wasn't chaotic. It was focused, blazing with clarity.

She rose to her feet, her voice steady.

"No. I am not your failure. I am Elira Valenhart!"

Her wings of frostfire exploded outward, lancing through the corridor. The doppelgängers shattered into shards, the mirrors collapsing one by one until only silence remained.

---

The corridor was still again.

Elira stood tall, frostfire simmering gently around her like a crown of light. Her eyes were clear, her breath steady. She had passed.

Kuro exhaled, relief washing over him. But his hands still trembled where he had held her.

Akira sheathed his blade with a low whistle. "Well. That was… something. Princess, remind me never to piss you off when mirrors are around."

Elira's lips trembled, torn between a laugh and tears. She turned to Kuro instead, her voice soft. "…You kept me from breaking."

He held her gaze, his voice quiet. "…Always."

Her cheeks warmed, and she looked away quickly. But her hand brushed against his for a fleeting moment—deliberate.

---

The corridor shifted. The floor melted into another path, deeper, darker. The silence was broken now by faint whispers, growing louder with every step.

[System Alert: Labyrinth of Forgotten Names – Phase Two Initiated]

[Next Trial Target: ???]

The path ahead pulsed with black light.

Akira rolled his shoulders, grimacing. "…Great. Something tells me this time, it's not just Elira's turn."

Kuro narrowed his emberlight gaze at the abyss. Shadows still coiled at his back, the Monarch's power stirring dangerously. He could already feel it—the Labyrinth was waiting for him too.

Elira stepped beside him, frostfire steady. "…Then we'll face it together."

The three of them moved forward into the deep, where the whispers grew louder—names of the forgotten, each one demanding to be remembered.

And at the heart of it, Kuro felt it: his own name beginning to fade.
