Prince of The Abyss

Chapter 106: Curious Light

With the rising of the sun, the people of the kingdom were awakened by its bright light. Marking the start of a new day, one with many opportunities and many paths to walk. This was also the same for our princess.

Iris had just come back from conquering a story with some of her knights, and was quite fatigued, but she didn't weaver, she knew that the wicked didn't rest, so should she?

"Only sixty-eight? What a bother."

She has hardly even touched her shards; at this rate, she was going to become an Echo when she was a Breaker. It was such an inconvenience. But what could she even do about it... after all, she lacked the power to fight.

[Praise]- A will of steel, and a heart of gold, a pair of eyes that gives hope to all. Bestowed the power of a greater being, your presence among mortals is worshiped, and it makes others believe. It makes them stronger.

She had grown to learn about the power of the being that had helped her awaken. Her father had been very ecstatic about it, throwing a huge banquet for two whole weeks.

And yet, while she was said to be the Vessel of the strongest God, who had given hope to the people of their kingdom. Her affinity didn't make her stronger; it wasn't related to combat but rather a utility affinity.

And while she didn't mind helping others, she felt weak, not being able to protect herself.

Her ability also didn't give her anything to fight with.

[Chorus of Grace]- Your voice is blessed by the gods; every sound it makes shall heal the wounds of the body.

It wasn't a bad ability; she never said it was, but at the same time, it was quite disappointing when she had expected something powerful when reading about her path.

[Vessel of Praise]- The ruler of the Gods has chosen you as her vessels. You shall be worshiped by others and give hope to your people. The evil of the world shall kneel to your feet, but perhaps you have forgotten something...

To tell the truth, most of the things that her path has said have turned out to be true; the people had worshiped her after the news that she was chosen as their God's vessel. It wasn't like she wasn't praised before; she was still the princess of their kingdom. But now it was nonstop. She even had days when she had to go to church and bless the people with Prais's powers.

She wondered if everything said in the path's description would come true; if then, would she really grow strong enough to make the monsters of the world kneel?

Also, what could she be forgetting? It was probably the weirdest thing from her awakening; she had no idea why it was there. The path is the mirror of the core, so was she had she really forgetting something important?

But what?

Her skills were nothing special, but skills aren't special in general. They mostly helped her with her day-to-day life, like remembering words from stories a lot better. Her writing was divine and elegant, and last but not least, she could grow flowers that she had studied wherever she wanted.

They were nice skills to have, but they didn't help her with anything. In exchange, her relics were a little different; two of them were gifted to her by her father. One let her write letters to him when she was inside a story, and the other allowed her to return to the Infinite Library when in danger. It was one use only, and a very powerful relic of the Harbinger class.

He had bought it personally from the Withered.

Her last relics, though, she had brought them herself from the Codex's trading system, since she wasn't allowed to leave the Blue Rose district. It had been a lot more expensive, but it was worth it since it allowed her to accumulate essence in a ring and use it when her own was low.

Her ability consumed a lot of essence, so she needed something to help her get more. And this was just perfect. She could fill it in times like this when she didn't need it, and it was quite helpful in battle.

...

But that was the only thing that helped her fight for herself. She had expected more from being the vessel of a God.

After all, she had met the other three vessels, and they were super powerful. Even her friend, and personal knight that had been there when she awakened, was much stronger than her. Even he had gotten an affinity related to combat.

...

She sighed, getting up from her grand bed, and sitting on a stool to fix her hair. Between us, she wasn't a morning person, and neither was her hair.

Quickly fixing it, she left her room in search of her teacher, who had told her to come and meet her, which was weird since they didn't have class that day. But she knew that it had to be important, so she couldn't make him wait.

...

"Ah, Iris, here you are. How good it is to see you."

When the old wizard opened up his arms, inviting the girl for a hug. Seeing this, Iris excitedly ran up to him and jumped into his arms.

They had a very great relationship; she had been her teacher for a very long time now. They were practically family.

After a long hug, the princess let go, backing away with a bright smile that could blind even the most sinful of the monsters.

"So why did you ask for me?"

The old man sighed, remembering the true reason for their meeting. He had almost forgotten that they weren't here for a lesson, but rather... something a lot more serious.

Iris looked around, seeing a number of robes and other clothes thrown around on the ground. It seemed as if he was preparing for a departure...

...

"As you have already guessed, i shall be leaving soon. This old bastard will go on an adventure like the old days. I don't know when I will be back, as my task was appointed to me by your father, the King, so I have to come back with nothing more than the truth. But don't worry, I shall be sending one of my most trusty disciples to come and take my place."

Her eyes saddened at his words. Was he really leaving her... yes, it was temporary, but why did he have to leave? Was it really this important? And while she knew that she was still going to get her lessons, she didn't want anyone else teaching her!

"But where are you going?"

Her teacher didn't respond, walking over to the gigantic windows, putting his hand on the glass, and staring beyond the wall that protected the Blue Rose. You couldn't see anything beyond it; it was only fog. Fog he was used to, darkness that he had lived through.

"The Withered... we have had news that the marketplace has been starting to fall. Relics are going missing, people are blaming each other... no one believes one another, and there have been many fires starting near it. We can't lose it."

The Withered marketplace was falling... that was unexpected, after all, until now she had only heard how it was getting better and better, what could have ever caused its fall.

"Alright... but why does it have to be you? It doesn't look like something you would be best at."

...

...

"Iris, you shall know, there were five Gods. You haven't learn about the fifth because we wish to bury its past after it was defeated by Praise... but we have speculations that it is back, and its vessel is the one creating the chaos in the Withered. I specialize in its past, that's why I was chosen."

...

"Then I want to come too!"

The old wizard turned to her with great surprise.

"... It's an opportunity to learn... right?"
