The fleeting opportunity had slipped through his fingers just like that.
He dared not look any longer, immediately tossing the sniper rifle into the nearby river and crawling back into the carriage, returning to his place, once again becoming an inconsequential traveler.
Huai Shi withdrew his gaze, waited at the spot for a while, and after no one else came to challenge him, he turned and walked towards the White Horse.
He saw a body kicked to pieces next to the White Horse.
"Who is this?"
"Don't know," Ai Qing shook her head. "Someone looking for easy pickings, probably."
Huai Shi nodded, carelessly pulled the remaining half of the Short Knife from the front, threw it to the ground, dusted it with Silver Blood Potion, and looked up ahead. "How much further?"
"Eighty kilometers, not far now."
Ai Qing asked, "Shall we keep going?"
"Then let's go."
Huai Shi mounted his horse and looked towards the gradually darkening sky ahead.
In the gloom, faint lightning flashed and thunder rumbled, illuminating the young man's dark pupils. Yet, in that pitch darkness, reflecting the fleeting thunder, a vague metallic sheen emerged.
He said, "Let's continue."
And so they continued.
Descending from the overpass, and along the highway, they went forward, seeing the valleys between high mountains, and the bridge above the valley.
On the bridge stood a hunched shadow, emanating a foul stench, but in its hands, it wielded a Sickle that seemed overly exaggerated compared to its monkey-like stature.
The bone-white Sickle, covered with notches, chilled those who saw it.
And beneath the disheveled hair, a pair of eyes, more white than black, burned blood red the instant they saw them. After screeching, it pounced at them directly.
Its legs had backward-bending joints!
To call it a person would be less accurate than calling it a wild beast.
CLANG!
The sweeping Sickle blade came to an abrupt halt in front of Huai Shi.
Atop the White Horse, the Sword of Virtue pressed against the handle of the Sickle, and Huai Shi slowly raised his eyes, staring into the creature's blood-red eyes.
"Just you?"
The monkey-like creature didn't speak, continuing to screech, raising the Sickle in its hands and slashing again.
But the horse reared up, violently kicking out its hooves at the enemy.
The enemy was sent flying but before it could land, Huai Shi had already appeared before it. The Sword Blade fell, and an arm flew into the air.
As the blood gushed, another arm shot out from the wound, violently grabbing Huai Shi's face, leaving two bloody scratches. The Sickle-wielder's feet hit the ground. The Sickle swept across, and the harsh screech of scraping steel rang out.
In a flash of lightning, the Axe Blade chopped down.
The bone-white Sickle broke. The creature opened its mouth to screech but saw Huai Shi closing in, and the Sacrificial Knife he flung stuck in its mouth, frantically sucking its blood and vital energy.
Instantly, that filthy face withered away.
The next moment, the Axe was raised, and it fell.
The head flew off.
The enemy fell to the ground.
Wary of its terrifying regenerative ability, Huai Shi waved his hand and tossed down a pack of metal fuel, snapping his fingers.
Flames rose, and within the fierce fire, the monkey-like creature struggled madly, screaming until at last, it was completely burned to ashes. All that remained was a withered head, still staring wide-eyed, fixated on Huai Shi.
Huai Shi raised his Axe, and smashed it.
Dead.
He raised his hand, the Silver Blood Potion smoothed the scratches on his face, and he looked into the distance.
Seventy kilometers.
He turned, leading the White Horse. "Let's go."
"Mhm."
Ai Qing nodded her head.
They continued on their way.
Atop a distant mountain, two figures clad in black suits peered through binoculars, scrutinizing the scene below. When they saw the monster they had dispatched was so easily slain, they could not help but frown.
"Not fast enough?"
"The speed is sufficient, but the skill is lacking, too much animal nature fused within it..."
"There's one more backup. Shall we continue?"
"Live drills are for exposing flaws. Now that we've found the flaws, there's no need to interfere."
"Shall we leave, then?"
"Mhm."
They picked up the briefcase beside them and turned to depart.
Huai Shi continued to advance.
Fifty-two kilometers outside Bright Town, they saw a massive beast crouching at the foot of a mountain.
With eight arthropod legs like a spider's, its body covered in heavy steel Armor, venom dripped slowly from its mouthparts. Intense chemical toxins melted even Stone into liquid, spreading a pungent stench.
Atop its back, a woman with densely tattooed skin raised her eyes, her hands gripping a Long Spear and Short Knife, both hook-like.
Upon noticing Huai Shi and the others' arrival, she slowly raised her weapons.
"I've already cleared the surroundings; no need to worry about your woman," she said in stiff Dongxia. "Come at me."
"Though she's no one's woman, thanks all the same."
Huai Shi smiled, tossed the Sacrificial Knife to Red Gloves to guard Ai Qing, asking them to stand further back. Once they had, he lifted the Spear of Compassion in his hand and gripped it tightly.
Without warning, a dark green net erupted from the spider-like beast's mouth. Its sharp, blade-like legs thundered against the ground as it hurtled toward Huai Shi with a howl.
The Spear of Compassion was raised. From the scent of iris flowers, a dim electrical luminescence sparked to life, framed by the sudden burst of thunder in the Sky Dome above. It thrust forward!
The White Horse neighed, stepped forth, and gallantly charged into the net!
Then, with a powerful and fierce thrust, they tore through the entire net and its restraints, brazenly charging into the spider-like beast.
The long hook and Spear of Compassion collided in mid-air, sparking off each other.
At the instant they passed each other, the woman swung her Short Knife horizontally.
Swift as a lightning flash.
Huai Shi was too slow to intercept! Nor did he want to.
In his hand, the Axe Blade came crashing down again, smashing the spider-like beast's Helmet and pulverizing its head. The Short Knife sliced past his throat, tearing through the raised collar of his coat and leaving a deep, bone-deep gash on his neck.
However, immediately after, the gash healed, forcibly knit back together as Huai Shi's palm slid over it.
The moment her mount was cleaved to death, the rider stumbled involuntarily. Then, she saw Huai Shi's Sword of Virtue thrust out, impaling her against the saddle.
Tearing through lungs and heart!
The tattooed woman seemed to feel no pain. Her long hook suddenly went limp, coiling around Huai Shi like a snake, while her other hand stabbed with the Short Knife again!
CRASH!
The Axe of Anger swept horizontally, shattering the softened long hook. With unstoppable momentum, it smashed her arm and the Short Knife it held.
Then, the arm was lifted, the Axe Blade carving an arc downward!
Slash!
As they passed each other, plasma spurted from Huai Shi's chest and the rider's shoulder.
The White Horse ran forward a short distance, then looked back at Huai Shi. Huai Shi patted its neck. It snorted and trotted back slowly.
Ai Qing looked up, staring at the bone-deep wound on Huai Shi's chest. Her expression unchanged, she only asked, "Continue?"
"Continue."
Huai Shi answered calmly, reached out, and pulled her onto the horse's back.
They continued onward.
Amid increasingly dense peals of thunder, the Sky Dome in the distance gradually darkened.
Rain was coming.
Another fifty kilometers...
