Chapter 156: Beneath the Legend_1

In KP's silence, the game ended.

A thick book emerged from the interplay of light and shadow, unfurling before him and Raven. Its numerous pages flipped until they stopped at the blank space at the end of the scroll.

A silver quill danced across the pages, heedless of KP's astonishment, leaving behind a trail of black script that proclaimed the end.

[False End]

——Fabricated Conclusion: No 'One' Survived

KP looked down at the line of text, dumbfounded.

"My, my, isn't this a bit too crude?" Raven chuckled with delight. "I've had this hunch for a while now that the kid had the potential to become a fanfic villain. I just didn't expect him to progress so quickly..."

As she spoke, she lifted her gaze to her former colleague standing before her.

"So, how does it feel, hosts?"

She asked softly, "My Secretary, does he meet your standards? Is he the kind of recorder you've been looking for? Someone who can treat the past and future equally, judge records and reality, and balance fiction and truth?"

"Marvelous..." KP murmured softly.

"Hmm?"

"I mean... Marvelous!"

He finally looked up. His eyes, far from showing chagrin or displeasure, were filled with astonishment, glittering with excitement. "Marvelous! Truly a legendary performance! A legend!"

Behind him, a woman clad in a black robe materialized, nodding slightly, her appreciation undisguised. "A Hero granted by heaven."

And at the table, in another chair that had been empty, an old man with a stern visage lifted his profound eyes, his voice deep. "A commendable feat."

Raven nodded in satisfaction, rubbing her small wings.

"Now then, let's discuss the next course of action... perhaps, compensation?"

.

.

When Huai Shi opened his eyes from a groggy state, he felt as though he was about to die from exhaustion.

It was like the discomfort of having run a hundred thousand marathons after a hangover and then being beaten up by a hundred thousand people.

Who am I?

Where am I?

What on earth happened?

Then, he saw Old Xiao grinning at him.

"Not bad, kid," the rugged man slapped his shoulder hard. "You did pretty well."

Startled, Huai Shi jumped up from the bed, nearly ripping off the IV drip attached to him.

He almost lost control, nearly swinging his Axe.

"Calm down, calm down, it's all over," Old Xiao coughed awkwardly a couple of times, turning to look at his own Inspector, the smiling old man. "What are you just standing there watching for? Hurry up and explain! Look at the mess you've made using my face! If I'd known, I wouldn't have come!"

"What's going on?"

Huai Shi looked completely baffled. He saw the grim-looking Ai Qing sitting at the table, and across from her, KP, who was smiling as he played with dice.

"Ahem, to put it simply, this was an impromptu surprise assessment," the elderly Inspector said after coughing twice. "Upon Mr. KP's suggestion, we've used this retrieval of the Philosopher's Stone as an exam."

"What?" Huai Shi was dumbfounded. "You arranged all of this?"

"Although there were a few unpleasant surprises, part of it... yes, that's correct."

The actual person playing Old Xiao in the mod, the elderly Inspector, gave an embarrassed smile and reached out his hand. "I apologize for any offense taken."

Huai Shi was speechless, looking towards Ai Qing, wanting to understand what was going on.

Ai Qing still looked unhappy. "Simply put, the operation was a test from the start. Both of us were taken for a ride. Heh, even the examiner himself nearly capsized."

"Don't put it like that, Miss Ai. Despite the many unexpected incidents, this was your and Mr. Huai's probationary assessment, after all."

The elderly Inspector coughed awkwardly again and shifted his gaze away.

"What surprises?"

"It's a long story..."

The elderly Inspector pondered for a moment, sighing in resignation.

In the beginning, there was no mod or game at all.

According to the original plan, everyone was to raid the smuggler's cargo ship and enjoy an overwhelming victory. Then, just as they were on the verge of successfully retrieving the shards of the Philosopher's Stone, unexpectedly, a Second fifth backstabbed them.

Lei Feizhou.

Under the direction of his Inspector, they planned to directly steal the shards of the Philosopher's Stone, flee, and sell them off at the Border. Initially, the backstabbing went smoothly, until they attempted to backstab Huai Shi… then trouble arose.

According to the Inspector, Huai Shi, who had caught on, displayed a reaction speed that could only be described as terrifying. He used his lethal skills to initiate guerrilla warfare on the ship, demonstrating a fearsome combat prowess far beyond imagination.

In just fifteen minutes, Huai Shi had dealt with Lei Feizhou and the four Sublimator accomplices he had contacted, cutting them down as easily as chopping vegetables.

In the end, unexpectedly, Lei Feizhou made a desperate move. He brutally activated the shard of the Philosopher's Stone, triggering a massive erosion phenomenon and leading to unknowable consequences.

Left with no choice, KP had to forcibly erase this segment of events through some means and then restart. This was the first cycle.

But the shard of the Philosopher's Stone had already thoroughly eroded the surroundings, deeply transforming the ship and the surrounding area into a constantly expanding Hell.

The retrieval difficulty skyrocketed to terrifying levels, and the second cycle recovery failed.

The Astronomical Society had no choice but to agree to KP's suggestion. They used the Darknet Border to cover the area, forcefully modularizing everything, and then embarked on the third cycle.
