Aiden arrived back at the spot where he'd initially disappeared from and his first sight was the dimming face of Cronyssia who had gone even paler than before, with her breathing shallow.
"Was there no progress?" Aiden asked while kneeling back down beside her.
Syqora looked at him with a puzzled expression in his eyes before speaking. "How were you able to alter the threads of fate?" he asked.
He was referring to the several mages Aiden had just resurrected from certain death.
By doing that, their destinies had been rewritten in ways that shouldn't have been possible.
Cronyssia smiled faintly and struggled to speak through weakened breaths. "We don't have much time," she said quietly and turned her gaze toward Aiden. "I'm going to do what my siblings did and pass my essence directly into you."
Syqora said nothing but watched with an unreadable expression on his face. Cronyssia had already made her mind up on this one.
Aiden looked surprised for a moment and questions formed in his mind but he decided to let them be until after this was done.
Especially as Cronyssia wasn't in such a state to be answering questions.
So He nodded once and simply asked, "What can I do?"
Cronyssia gestured for him to come closer.
Aiden stepped forward and knelt down beside her while Cronyssia lifted one clawed finger with great effort and placed it gently on his forehead.
Her essence began to flow from her body into his and it looked like streams of blue pixie dust pouring through the air before being absorbed into Aiden's skin.
The light faded slowly until there was nothing left and Cronyssia's body fell entirely unconscious in Syqora's arms.
Syqora closed his eyes tightly and gritted his teeth in pain before he slowly turned toward Aiden whose body had just received the dragon's essence.
Aiden's eyes began to glow brightly as a surge of energy pushed through him and filled every part of his being.
A translucent screen appeared before his eyes:
[Cronyssia's Essence and the Authority of Time is Bonding with the Dragon King System]
[Bonding Complete]
[The Host Has Gained A New Authority]
[Host has gained the Authority of Time]
Aiden looked down at his hands with an astonished expression on his face as the power flowing through him felt overwhelming in ways he couldn't fully describe.
Syqora also looked at him with astonishment and shock in his eyes as if he couldn't believe what he was seeing.
Actually there was something about the power flowing through Aiden that had triggered this sort of reaction.
"Just a few seconds ago I could see your thread of fate," Syqora said slowly. "But now there's no thread for you." He paused and his voice dropped lower. "That has never happened before, not even for angels."
"I don't understand what you mean," Aiden said with a puzzled expression. "And angels?"
But before an answer could come forth from Syqora, Aiden's sight became blurry and hazy and suddenly he fell to the ground unconscious.
Not long after, Aiden woke up in a place of complete darkness.
This was his subconscious.
He looked around confused while wondering why that had just happened.
Then suddenly a majestic black dragon slowly walked toward him and each step it took made resounding quaking sounds that shook the invisible walls of Aiden's subconscious.
This was Thyrak, The Great Black Dragon and The Dragon of Destruction.
"I suppose it is time we finally met," Thyrak said with a voice that carried so much weight and power.
Aiden simply looked at him in awe at first before he smiled and said casually, "Yeah, I suppose it's time we finally did."
——
Moments later a conversation ensued in earnest between the both of them.
Aiden asked the first thing that came to his mind. "Why me? Why did Cronyssia choose to transfer her essence to me? Would it not have been a smarter choice to pass her authority to a much stronger dragon who is more matured than I am?"
Thyrak's voice rumbled through the darkness as he spoke. "It wouldn't work that way for any other dragon because they don't have a system like you do," he explained. "Being able to house another dragon's essence requires the system."
Aiden frowned slightly. "I don't quite understand."
Thyrak continued patiently. "The system was originally made for me as an alternative to our perpetual immortality as living concepts of the universal concepts."
He paused and his eyes glowed faintly. "Being a dragon of destruction was a burden and I grew tired of bearing that burden, so by having someone else inherit my essence and become me they also inherit my burden."
"You still exist though," Aiden pointed out. "Even if it's just as essence."
"This is different," Thyrak replied. "Of course I still exist in the form of essence and my vessels eventually become me in my very likeness, but I wouldn't be the one to live the life and experience of the dragon anymore."
"Hmm, I see," Aiden said thoughtfully.
"In a way the system itself defied the natural rules of the universe, because no one person was made to have that much power. And so even if a dragon tried to transfer their essence to another dragon, it simply wouldn't work."
"The way transfer of essence works is that a dragon's essence being transferred goes straight into the system, which acts as a holding capacity of sorts," Thyrak explained further. "Then the system in turn, slowly makes another transfer of that essence into the vessel."
Aiden tilted his head slightly. "Who was able to create such complex magic, that is able to defy such rules?"
"It was made by a sorcerer from a different era not of this one," Thyrak answered. "But this is a story you will come to know and understand much later in the future."
Aiden nodded slowly.
"You've done well, Thyrak," Cronyssia's voice came from the background as she in her own dragon form slowly approached Aiden, with her black and white scales gleaming faintly in the darkness.
Aiden had a smile on his face when he saw Cronyssia. "I thought you were really gone," he said.
"Truthfull, none of us really are," another dragon's voice spoke as it emerged with skin that looked like it was made from the night's sky covered in stars as if whole galaxies were sliding across its surface. This was Veyqorin, the Dragon of Space.
"Dear sister has only been here one second and she's already forcing us all out," a witty yet majestic voice said as another dragon emerged from the shadows with scales that looked like they changed textures or colors constantly, but in truth it was hard to fully discern what they truly were. This was Keyles, the Dragon of Replication.
And like that, Aiden was standing in the midst of four dragons.
