Abyss Sequence

Chapter 3: Underhanded Tactics

Elves... are quite peculiar.

Their society is almost like a Utopia. I wonder if the author of "Utopia" had consulted some ancient texts before writing the book, catching glimpses of the influences elves left on human civilization between the lines.

Just in the city of Gass that Yan Luo saw, the elves here are neighborly and amicable, practicing a system of common ownership, with little presence of trading, living harmoniously and kindly.

At the same time, the elves here are also quite closed off.

When dealing with things they despise, for instance, some elves who foresee the impact human commodities can have on their society and see the collapse of elf culture in the future, their actions are limited to verbally urging other elves, without resorting to incitement or deception, respecting the freedom of other elves without interfering with their choices.

Thus, when humans face elves, they do not deal with a unified entity named 'Elf,' but rather with individuals who inherit 'elf culture.'

There's no need for conspiracies; merely the sale of products to elves can split these individuals into different groups.

By endorsing a certain product, it can create a false 'common understanding,' causing them to self-divide, fragmenting their tribe.

But doing so is truly sad!

Yan Luo looked at the surrounding elves, silent.

The trucks faced no obstruction, easily reaching the front of the Lord's Mansion.

This facility is not the Lord's residence; it's the management institution of Gass City, which could also be called the City Hall without much difference.

It's just that when those linguists were translating, they tried to choose words that stayed true to the original meaning, hence in the translation plugin, it's named 'Lord's Mansion.'

Yan Luo and his group couldn't directly trade with the city's residents because their cargo volume was too large; only the local lord could handle it, and not even entirely.

The three trucks were loaded with space boxes, containing various products not only from companies under the Pension Association but also food produced by Bao Han Company.

As for the prices of these products, Liu Feiyu and Li Xinyue had discussed them well during their last visit, but they also granted Yan Luo some negotiation authority; if the elves felt the prices agreed upon last time were a bit high, Yan Luo could lower the prices accordingly.

That's the power of industry: the larger the sales volume, the lower the cost.

The Flying Dragon Cavalry had early reported the arrival of humans to the Lord's Mansion employees, and now a few elves were waiting at the gates of the Lord's Mansion.

Neither the employees of the Lord's Mansion nor the Lord himself understood the current state of human civilization or what 'industry' meant.

They initially thought humans could only transport at most five times the amount of last time; in their understanding, it was already a lot for small workshop producers to suddenly bring out such quantities of goods.

Unknown to them, the small workshop production model had long been eliminated by human civilization, and the number of goods Yan Luo and his group brought was not five times, nor fifty times, but 500 times!

Even so, it still wasn't their limit.

These goods were only a two-day consumption for a city, because now each city in Blue Star had a population of at least ten million, and daily consumption of food, clothing, and utilities was a colossal figure.

When the Lord's Mansion employees took out a space box from the truck and opened it to see the goods inside, they were stunned.

Subsequently, they dumbly raised their heads, gazing at the space box that filled an entire cargo container.

Two more cargo trucks with the same loading capacity were still there!

"My Lord, something bad has happened!"

A few employees dropped the space box and hurriedly ran into the Lord's Mansion.

Yan Luo caught the space box, watching their backs as they departed.

The three drivers beside Yan Luo were stunned, glancing at each other.

"What, what's going on?"

"There's too much cargo, they can't handle it," Yan Luo answered indifferently.

This was precisely what Liu Feiyu and Li Xinyue aimed to achieve—or rather, the intent of the two economic entities behind them, the Pension Association and Bao Han Company.

The goods they brought were too many for the city of Gass to consume entirely, even though the city might have a population of a million elves. The Lord of Gass City did not want them to directly interact with the city's residents, so he required them to trade through the Lord's Mansion, which would then serve as a channel to the city's residents.

The Lord promised not to create any price difference in between, safeguarding human interests.

To convince Liu Feiyu and Li Xinyue, he even promised that regardless of how many goods the humans brought, he would accept them all.

Unfortunately, Liu Feiyu's initial intentions were not simple; the Pension Association was not content with merely earning the trade differences with the Elf World; they wanted more.

Initially, the Pension Association might have been a simple organization aimed at dealing with Abyssal Believers, but after growing strong, their initial thoughts no longer mattered; they had to become responsible for their affiliated companies and groups, becoming another embodiment of capital.

Yan Luo found their methods quite despicable.

An elder elf, supported by a few employees, came out of the Lord's Mansion, glanced at the first truck with the cargo doors open, and turned to Yan Luo, saying earnestly: "You have too many goods; we cannot purchase that much."

Yan Luo extended two fingers: "First, I can make the decision to lower the prices of these goods slightly; second, if Gass City can't consume all the goods, I can transport the remaining goods to the next city to sell, but I'll need your referral letter and a copy of Gass City's audit report on these categories of goods."

The Lord fell silent, unable to speak for a long time.

In elf culture, keeping promises is very important. Even the wisest elf in a territory wouldn't want to violate the tradition of keeping promises.

Because he knew that compared to the spread of human commodities among the Elf Race, the collapse of elf cultural traditions was far more terrifying.

The former would only make elves admire humans, whereas the latter would create an indelible impact on elf civilization, allowing humans to find more leverage points to pry open elf civilization.

"... You are truly wicked," the Lord said to Yan Luo resentfully.

Yan Luo shook his head, "That's them, not me. In fact, the second point is my own decision. According to those people, they just want to break your traditions, to destroy this 'Utopia.' For humans, their approach is correct, as it can prevent war between humans and elves—as long as the elves become vassals of humans, war will not occur; the factions within the Elf Race that favor and those that detest humans will fight amongst themselves."

"But I find their methods despicable, so I thought of a solution for you all. When I return, I will definitely curse them out, but as for fighting, that's impossible, because I don't think their methods are wrong; I just find them repulsive."

The people and elves around did not expect Yan Luo to be so forthright, expressing his innermost thoughts without reservation.

The Lord fell silent again, eventually sighing deeply: "I really was wrong, you are different from those people, Yan Luo, you will still be a friend to us elves in the future, and those people..."

"You are wrong," Yan Luo interrupted the Lord, clarifying, "The truly despicable acts were orchestrated by those behind Liu Feiyu; the Bao Han Company, represented by Li Xinyue, is very honest and did not participate in this matter. The quantity of food they brought is carefully calculated and can be completely digested by Gass City's residents."

Yan Luo's seriousness left the Lord a bit helpless, so he added Li Xinyue's name to 'friend of the elves.'

"I can give you the letter, but as for that 'copy'..."

The Lord chose to maintain the tradition of elf culture, deciding to follow Yan Luo's plan.

The cargo list included a 'copy machine.' Yan Luo opened the cargo lists of the three trucks, found the space box containing the copy machine, rummaged through a pile of space boxes to extract it.

The goods they brought all have elvish manuals, and even the buttons have elvish labels, so Yan Luo directly handed a copy machine to the Lord, letting them handle the copying themselves.

In this way, they could reach other elf cities.
