Abyss Sequence

Chapter 46: Eating

The motorcycle's headlights illuminated the path as it slowly progressed through the spacious tunnel. Yan Luo cautiously observed his surroundings with the help of the light.

During the expansion phase of the Crimson Abyss, many hunters ventured into the mysterious underground palace, hoping to find valuable loot within.

As a result, the demons within the mysterious underground palace were documented in the "Crimson Abyss Demon Compendium," giving Yan Luo some insight into the palace's conditions.

However, before the exploration of the mysterious underground palace could be completed, hunters gradually withdrew from the investigation.

Therefore, Yan Luo did not fully understand the Crimson Abyss and the demons within this abyss.

The missing understanding lay within the mysterious underground palace.

Yan Luo must be on high alert, maintaining a hundred percent vigilance within the mysterious underground palace. He couldn't let his guard down, even though he had escaped the pursuit of city-breaking level demons, or he might die here.

According to Yan Luo's knowledge, the interior of the mysterious underground palace was vast, an underground world formed by hundreds of interconnected cavities.

This place harbored a unique ecological system and fungi-type demons not found elsewhere.

Additionally, unlike the imagined underground world, the mysterious underground palace was void of any light, with most demons here being blind and relying on other senses.

Under such circumstances, the sensory abilities of the demons were no different from those on the surface, meaning that if they ventured to the surface or entered Blue Star through entrances, they were basically walking into a trap.

This is one of the reasons why Blue Star only set up a lookout post at the connection entrance between the mysterious underground palace and Blue Star, instead of establishing a small exploration town.

Even a city-breaking level demon from the mysterious underground palace was no different from a machine when it arrived at Blue Star.

Since the mysterious underground palace was a place where neither entry nor exit was possible, Blue Star continually left it unattended, completely unbothered.

But Yan Luo always felt that this would lead to trouble sooner or later.

The abyss is a widely recognized danger. Some believe risks can yield profits; others think that while the abyss is perilous, Blue Star has ways to cope as long as the abyss hasn't reached its peak threat level; while some believe the abyss will inevitably destroy Blue Star.

Yan Luo belonged to the third group, always believing that the abyss would completely annihilate Blue Star.

The attitude of Blue Star, treating the mysterious underground palace as non-existent, would ultimately backfire badly.

The spaces within the underground cavities of the mysterious underground palace varied in size. The larger cavities were equivalent to modern cities, whereas smaller ones were akin to villas. Yan Luo wasn't sure if new underground cavities had formed or old ones had collapsed since hunters stopped exploring the palace, but he knew his memories served only as reference.

After passing through a rather lengthy tunnel, Yan Luo finally entered the first underground cavity.

The injury on his left shoulder had eased significantly, and the pain had entirely vanished; it might fully recover soon.

Rustling sounds...

Upon entering the first underground cavity, Yan Luo heard some faint noises, like something crawling.

The sensory module quickly captured the object, displaying its silhouette on Yan Luo's goggles.

It was a large centipede, approximately twenty centimeters long, not even comparable to Blue Star's native species, the giant centipede.

Yan Luo activated his wristband-style magic power gauge, measuring the remaining magic power in his body, realizing it was less than 2000 Qi.

For him, magic power was essential for strengthening his physique, as well as a backup medicine.

If his body got injured, as long as there was still magic power within him, he could rapidly recover.

Yan Luo urgently needed to replenish his magic power.

With that in mind, Yan Luo immediately went after the large centipede.

He pulled out a long-barreled shotgun and fired three shots at the centipede, knocking it off the cave wall. He then drove closer and slashed off its head with a knife.

The centipede's poison gland was located in its head; once he severed its head, the remaining parts were edible.

Yan Luo picked up the remaining body of the centipede, its slightly lively body twisting in his hand, even wrapping around his arm.

Without a change in expression, Yan Luo opened his metal mask and stuffed the centipede into his mouth, chewing and swallowing.

He had eaten demons that looked even uglier; anything that could replenish his magic power was edible to him.

After consuming the centipede, Yan Luo continued riding his motorcycle, searching for the entrance connecting the mysterious underground palace and Blue Star.

The underground cavities weren't all at the same depth; some were deeper underground while others were closer to the surface.

Although the entrance signal tower had a broadcast range of thirty kilometers in radius, the actual signal range was less due to soil obstruction.

Moreover, even if he found the signal broadcasted by the tower, he'd still need to figure out a way to find the route to the underground cavity where the entrance was located.

Fortunately, Yan Luo had memorized the map of the mysterious underground palace; as long as the underground cavities in his memory hadn't collapsed, he could follow the route to find the entrance.

Yan Luo continued driving forward for a short while when, suddenly, he noticed a slender figure dressed in white with long hair covering the face, appearing in the distance.

He blinked, and the figure drew closer.

"There are no humanoid demons in the Crimson Abyss, idiot."

Yan Luo ridiculed, as the motorcycle drove straight ahead.

Despite speaking these words, Yan Luo actually pulled out his shotgun as he approached the 'ghost' and fired at it.

Spiritual creatures can be attacked directly with physical methods, though there is a chance of missing. With a shotgun, however, each pellet can potentially harm a spirit, and even if the failure rate of an attack exceeds 80%, nearly 20% of the pellets might hit the spirit.

The ancestors have said gunpowder is the ultimate yang, powerful against evil. Indeed, it does not deceive.

Hit by the pellet, the 'ghost' shrieked suddenly and lunged at Yan Luo.

This scare tactic had no effect on Yan Luo; he was completely unfazed, even finding it somewhat amusing.

The 'ghost' passed through Yan Luo without taking away any of his warmth, dispersing immediately afterward.

According to researchers, the mysterious underground palace seemed to possess a special field that induced hunters to experience fear-related illusions. If they believed them, they'd frighten themselves to death, with their bodies displaying corresponding marks created by the hallucinations.

The motorcycle proceeded further, and before long, Yan Luo encountered a fungi-type demon.

The demon was large, standing at least three meters tall.

Even upon encountering Yan Luo, the fungi demon remained motionless, just standing there quietly without moving.

Yan Luo, unyielding to its indifference, disembarked and cut off part of the fungi demon's body with his long knife, and took a bite.

After chewing a few times, he noticed his tongue felt slightly numb.

As expected, it was toxic; no wonder this demon didn't move.

Yan Luo remembered some plant-type demons in the Crimson Abyss. Those demons lacked particularly strong combat skills, their greatest ability being their possession of toxins. The demons that consumed them either died, becoming their fertilizer, or they were consumed.

This fungi-type demon had a similar characteristic to those plant-type demons.

Yan Luo didn't know about the toxicity of this fungi demon because hunters wouldn't casually eat fungi raw—only he would.

Feeling the numbness in his tongue, Yan Luo immediately halted his consumption and stood for a moment.

Once he confirmed the numbness came quickly and faded swiftly, with his lips void of numbness, he resumed eating, devouring gladly.

For him, the fungi demon's toxins weren't potent, but its body likely contained ample magic power, making it a suitable demon for replenishing his magic power.

Yan Luo consumed the fungi demon from head to toe, eating it completely before noticing a vortex forming in the air ahead; then, a mushroom materialized from thin air.

Dumbfounded, Yan Luo gazed in astonishment.

He had consumed the demon entirely, leaving no trace behind. Why was there magic-condensed material occurring?

Could it be that items dropped from a demon's death weren't derived from the demon itself, but directly drawn from the abyss's magic?

Holding the mushroom in his hands, Yan Luo had countless questions swirling in his mind, unable to figure it out.
