In an instant.
Duncan saw the Valkyrie in mid-air with his naked eyes, but as the icy blue vertical pupils of the dragon eye gradually faded, the image of the Valkyrie also slowly disappeared.
Only from the God's perspective of the Dimension Space could her hazy silhouette be seen.
The dragon is a watershed of the Mythical Era.
The East and West are not much different; in the Song of Ice and Fire, there is a scene where the male sorcerer was merely a magician toying with tricks, but as the Dragon Mother hatched three Giant Dragons, the sorcerer's mana was restored to its former state. As for the East, when you hear about a Daoist who knows some spells, or about a place where the Guardian Fairy is very effective, or even occasionally hear some supernatural rumors, you won't believe it too much, just thinking it might be feudal superstition spreading rumors.
But if one day, you were to see an Eastern Dragon in rivers and lakes, trust me, you'd only have one thought in mind.
I must cultivate immortality!
That's basically what it means; when people see a dragon, it is the moment when myth reflects reality.
As for other monsters, they hardly have as much influence as dragons do.
From a supernatural perspective, dragons are inherently magical creatures. Especially in the mid-to-late Mythical Era, dragons themselves are the embodiment of magic power, their presence causing the magical winds around to ripple and ultimately leading supernatural power to arise from belief and thought.
The dragon eye can see the Valkyrie and penetrate the Banshee's illusion.
"Why didn't I gain any abilities?"
This is Duncan's biggest confusion right now because after slaying the gigantic monster, he acquired two Special Abilities: one was the further strengthened Giant Power, and the second was the long-awaited Regeneration.
But the Mother of Monsters gave him nothing, Duncan didn't obtain any special abilities at all.
This doesn't really make sense!
Either a bug appeared suddenly in the Dimension Space, or the Mother of Monsters is planning something big, and Duncan feels the second possibility is more likely.
Sure enough.
A touch of enchanting blood-red light appeared.
On the corpse of the slain Banshee, the flowing fresh blood was gradually coalescing, and then its body began to dissolve, as if it were a being not belonging to the real world, decomposing bit by bit, until an enchanting blood-red cup emerged in its chest cavity.
——Cup of Blood [Legendary Object]: This is a Legendary Object not belonging to the real world, formed by power, desire, and greed, representing the evil side of human nature. There is more than one Cup of Blood; it is a relic of the Dark Ages and can be traced back to the time of the great flood.
(In the conflict between Monotheism and Polytheism, many legendary monsters were absorbed and transformed into church mythology. Dragons were legendary as the incarnations and symbols of Satan the Devil, assuming different identities in different mythological systems, thus gaining new monstrous appearances.)
(In the integrated mythology, Grendel and the Mother of Monsters are descendants of Cain in the Bible, and the new myths brought by missionaries sparked transformations even in the Dark Ages' monsters.)
(Thus, the Cup of Blood is formed.)
(The church regards it as the Holy Grail of Satan, only held by legendary devils.)
Duncan slowly picked up the cup and found there was something inside it, and even the Valkyrie in mid-air showed a trace of longing.
——Blood of Desire [Legendary Relic]: The Mother of Monsters inherits the ancient forbidden powers of the matriarchal society of the Dark Ages, holding traces of divine laws related to lust, greed, and procreation, embodying the degenerate desires of human nature.
She is a monster not belonging to the real world, a relic from when human concepts of 'morality' had not yet appeared during the Dark Ages.
The blood in the goblet can serve as the core element for promoting one to a demigod, corresponding to the divine domains of lust, greed, and procreation, yet at the end of the Mythical Era, its power was greatly weakened. It couldn't be used to ascend to a True God, but it could attempt to merge and replace the faith of a fallen deity in the Polytheism, or replace a weaker deity's aspect.
(The era of the gods has ended, even the blood in the goblet can only cling to survival.)
Indeed, it was worth the wait for something big.
When Duncan entered Mist-covered Avalon, the Guardian Fairy there was weakened to three-star silver-gray, yet the Mother of Monsters, not belonging to the real world, could still maintain her three-star golden strength.
So, long ago, she might have been even stronger than Avalon's Guardian Fairy!
Perhaps she was an Evil God of Witchcraft who couldn't withstand the primitive religion and gradually declined into a monster, becoming the rumored Mother of Monsters.
The laws suppressing the real world are extremely terrifying.
Duncan's strength in the mythical illusion could be said to crush mortals easily, casually lifting objects weighing several tons; if he exerted his full strength, he might even lift things weighing tens of tons. This is the true Giant Power, like the terrifying force in myths to move mountains and fill seas.
"How does this thing work?"
Duncan held the Cup of Blood; it looked like an ordinary goblet, with a dark golden appearance, inscribed with a circle of script on the outside, while the inside engraved a dark red crowned fire dragon, presumably symbolizing Satan.
The Blood of Desire inside seemed like a crystallized liquid, unmoving, melded with the Cup of Blood, exuding a slightly intoxicating sweet wine fragrance.
——"Cup of Blood [Legendary Object]: Upon activating this item, myth reflects reality, the wishes of all beings manifesting as miracles, within a certain range, all creatures break through the limits of reality, and those resonating with the Holy Grail also gain this power, transforming into Mythical Form. Duration is determined by the blood in the goblet; once exhausted, its power vanishes."
(In Exodus, Moses parted the Red Sea with a divine miracle, this is myth reflecting reality.)
(Many gods were born from faith, this is the manifestation of the wishes of all beings carried over from the Dark Ages, a trace of divine law condensed over the ages.)
Hiss!
Duncan couldn't help but gasp, secretly thinking that this thing was terrifying indeed.
It actually has two uses, one is 'deification', but not at the level of a Main God, rather a normal demigod of Polytheism, in Europe it probably has no chance, likely to be eradicated by the church. However, in places like South America or North America, it might be possible to replace some local deity among the native Indians and linger for hundreds of years, only to eventually be wiped out by the church.
In Africa, the Voodoo gods might fit, but who would want to try their luck in Africa.
The Mother of Monsters herself didn't fare too well; one can't expect the things she left behind to help you reach the heavens in a single bound.
There were many gods below the Twelve Main Gods of ancient Greece.
Look at the situation now?
Not even a trace left.
So you can't expect too much from it. If it were the Ancient Era, the Mother of Monsters might be a strong god of Primitive Religion, but now it's just like that.
Honestly, Duncan thinks she can't defeat the three-star gold-marked Dragon Slayer - Saint George.
As for another use, it's 'self-destruction,' everyone exploding with power, the wishes of all beings making the mythical reflection reality, using the Cup of Blood as a medium, activating a brief mythological descent, until the blood in the cup is exhausted. During this period, anything might emerge within the affected range.
Duncan doesn't doubt that angels might descend, heroes from mythological legends might awaken, even half-human, half-god figures might appear.
Just not sure if the Cup of Blood can hold up!
It's just a medium for the mythical reflection of reality, hope it doesn't directly explode.
"Put it away."
With Duncan's thought, the Cup of Blood disappeared out of thin air, directly into the Dimension Space, but it couldn't be materialized, instead marked on the projection page, merging with the Number One Human Form, as if bound together.
It seems that the Mother of Monsters' power is concentrated in the Cup of Blood, hence there wasn't any acquisition of Special Ability.
Still, something feels off.
Because in Beowulf's myth, he suddenly found an Ancient Sword in the Banshee's lair, then used it to slay the banshee, but when returning to the water's surface, the sword melted like ice, leaving only a hilt.
This raises suspicion that the Norse Pantheon might have intervened secretly.
"The mist-covered Avalon, in its decline, supported King Arthur's myth."
"The Norse Pantheon likely supported Beowulf's myth as well."
Duncan essentially relied on his own strength to slay the Mother of Monsters, so he utterly didn't see that Ancient Sword with magic.
Feels like I'm the only one hacking through this with sheer guts, huh?!
It's simple to verify this.
Duncan slightly tidied up the battlefield, kicked the melted banshee's head aside, picked up her cervical vertebrae with one hand, along with the tail.
—"Banshee Spine Whip [Legendary Relic]: Can be processed."
That's the only trophy left from the battle.
The Mother of Monsters' cervical vertebrae perfectly served as a grip, the spine as the heavy whip part, while the tail, like a soft golden whip, ended with a sharp spike.
Everything else was basically completely melted away.
Duncan headed straight for the giant monster's lair, which was filled with the clean-picked bones of cattle, sheep, horses, and humans, with a small pile of treasures, but not much, and he couldn't find what he was looking for.
"Where's the Giant Sword?"
"Damn it, the Norse Pantheon really is secretly helping Beowulf!"
Next, Duncan went directly to the banshee's lair.
The same outcome.
The Ancient Sword with magic was also gone; just a bunch of odd curiosities, some seemingly ancient human bone engravings from a sacrificial rite, with the Mother of Monsters' treasure pile being much larger, but many not valuable.
Because Duncan surprisingly saw 'shell coins' in the corner, the shell currency of matriarchal society times.
The Middle Ages aren't stronger just for being older, those poorly mixed might have their matriarchal society era blood sacrifice gods fallen to the dark corner monsters.
"I knew it!"
"How could there just happen to be an Ancient Sword that could kill the Banshee in her lair?"
"These folks are all acting!"
Duncan's biggest harvest was the banshee's legacy items. The treasures from the two monsters weren't even worth as much as the Saxons' paid tribute gold.
"Looks like King Arthur's legend is also a mythological script."
"Merlin made a bet."
"The mist-covered Avalon placed a bet too."
Duncan squinted slightly, feeling the banshee's spine with his hand, contemplating: "Can I place a bet?"
"Can the script follow my intentions?"
He remembers vividly, in one outcome of the Law of Cause and Effect deduced future, King Arthur became his foster son.
This legitimate succession right is even stronger than King Uther's biological son!
Incredibly strong.
According to Rome's tradition of adopting heirs, it's the King of Britain—Duncan designating the next legitimate successor.
