Hunter of Mysterious Creature

Chapter 77: Ambushed

"Yes, the more famous symbiotic type..."

Before Song Yarong could finish speaking, Sun Hang suddenly felt a malicious gaze piercing through the car's shell and landing on him. At the same time, a not-so-intense sense of danger surged up.

"Get down." Sun Hang said, and simultaneously, the mycelium rapidly spread out, forming an impervious barrier in front of him.

"Huh?" Song Yarong was stunned for a moment, completely failing to understand what Sun Hang was saying.

Just then, a light SUV with military license plates passed by from the opposite direction, and the moment the two vehicles met, two assault rifles suddenly poked out from the SUV's window, unleashing a fierce barrage at the van where Sun Hang and the others were!

As a government vehicle for urban use, the van wasn't equipped with armored steel plates. The bullets pierced through the shell instantly, and Song Yarong let out a muffled groan, immediately collapsing onto her seat.

Her protective suit was half-unzipped, with the zipper all the way to her waist. Her entire upper body wore only snug underwear and a thin T-shirt, offering no protection whatsoever.

Blood continuously gushed from her chest, soaking her clothes in a large patch of dark red blood.

Fortunately, the driver in front wasn't hit in a critical area. The bullet went through his arm and shoulder. Though his wounds bled profusely, he grimly endured the excruciating pain and slammed on the brakes. The screeching noise of tires dragging along the road instantly filled the entire street.

At the first moment of the attack, Ye Jiu had already smashed through the top cover of the vehicle, jumped straight onto the road, and chased after the SUV.

Sun Hang used the mycelium to block Song Yarong's wounds, helping to stop her bleeding as much as possible.

"Are the attackers human?" Sun Hang asked over the communication channel.

"Yeah... if I'm not mistaken, they're a bunch of crazies worshipping mysterious creatures. Just not sure where they stole the military vehicle and gear from!" Ye Jiu replied while giving chase, "Is the researcher still alive?"

"Alive for now; I've already stopped her bleeding." Sun Hang said, "But her lung is pierced; if not sent to the hospital promptly, she will still die."

"The rescue team has already been dispatched, tell her to hold on a bit longer!"

The van's tires and axle were blown out; the fact that it didn't flip over was due to the driver's skill and sheer luck — the vehicle was now undrivable. The nearest hospital still lay twelve kilometers away.

There was a community hospital nearby in the district, but neither its medical staff nor equipment could meet the necessary conditions for performing emergency surgery.

Song Yarong's actual condition was worse than what Sun Hang described over communication.

The bullet didn't just puncture her lung; upon entering her body, it twisted, shattering most of her lung lobes and tearing several key large blood vessels.

The mycelium that entered Song Yarong's body managed to temporarily control the internal bleeding, but blood mixed with lung fragments still continuously surged from her mouth and nose — the fact she didn't die instantly when shot was already a miracle of life.

Never mind the rescue team, even if Song Yarong were immediately teleported to the operating table, they might still not be able to save her.

A complete new lung lobe needed to be replaced for her to survive... Sun Hang thought for a moment, focusing his mind on the mycelium remaining in Song Yarong's body.

The mycelium began to change; they pulled and adhered the shattered lung and blood vessels together, filling in the damaged parts, then differentiating into the different tissue cells... Finally, it cleared away the "debris" and congested blood blocking the airway and vessels.

Song Yarong's complexion remained pale, but she could at least breathe freely like a normal person now.

"Is Mr. Song alright?" the driver asked over, pressing gauze over his wound, somewhat arduously.

From an outsider's view, Song Yarong's injury was fatal; the bullet's location and her horrifying blood loss both seemed to herald death's approach.

"Not dead, just lost a lot of blood." Sun Hang said, "When the rescue team arrives, she'll need a blood transfusion promptly."

"This van was modified from an ambulance; there's a first-aid kit and a freezer under the seat." the driver said, "There's a syringe in the first-aid kit and emergency plasma in the freezer, see if they can be of any use."

"Oh?"

Sun Hang looked down, finding a freezer fixed right under his seat, locked with a combination lock.

"What's the code?" Sun Hang asked.

"I might need to check the memos... My phone's in my pocket, but I'm a bit inconvenienced now..." the driver said.

"No need for that." Two strands of mycelium directly slipped into the combination lock's slots, twisted gently, and the metal latch broke into two parts. Sun Hang opened the box and took out several bags of plasma wrapped in foil.

In hospitals, to reduce rejection reactions as much as possible, blood types must match and cross-matching tests performed before transfusion — but in emergencies, Type O blood can be given universally to patients.

Sun Hang didn't bother with the syringe in the other first-aid kit, directly piercing a hollow mycelium into the blood bag, and the other end into Song Yarong's blood vessel — as the mycelium rhythmically pulsed, plasma was directly pumped into Song Yarong's body.

"This ability is really handy." the driver sighed quietly, "It's the first time I've seen a hunter use their special abilities to save lives..."

"Have you seen many hunters? What kinds of abilities do they have?" Sun Hang raised his head and glanced at the driver, asking.

"At least three or four dozen." the driver said, "But honestly... most hunters don't really like to deal with people, and along with the institute's regulations, I'm not quite sure what abilities they truly have."

"I've always been curious, how do ordinary people view hunters? As humans with special abilities, or as monsters that look human? Or something else?" Sun Hang asked.

"Well, to me, you hunters are definitely kindred! After all, when mysterious creatures invade, it's the hunters on the front lines." the driver said, "As for ordinary people, that's uncertain... they know less about mysterious creatures and hunters, so feelings of fear or hatred should be normal. But from what I know, among young people now, many seem to admire hunters, even hoping to become one themselves."

When the driver mentioned this, for some reason, Sun Hang's mind automatically brought up the face of 0401.

That guy seemed quite eager to become a hunter.

Yet between ideals and life, he wisely chose the latter.

"I might be able to guess the identity of those bastards who attacked us just now." the driver suddenly cursed, "These people split into the moderates and radicals. Moderates advocate for coexistence between humans and mysterious creatures, believing infection by them aids human evolution, and those failing to evolve are naturally eliminated. These fools often demand online for the Federation to lift blockades in border regions and disband hunter organizations... As for radicals, they just indiscriminately attack Investigation Bureau teams and Mysterious Creature Research Institutes everywhere — if you ask me, these people are more hateful than the mysterious creatures!"
