BOOM!
The disciple's head shook violently as his eyes rolled back and he collapsed, unconscious. When did this thing get behind us? The thought shocked him even as he fainted.
With one swing of its club, the golden figure flashed and vanished, leaving behind a trail of afterimages. In the next moment, it appeared behind another exceptional talent and, mimicking the previous move, swung down. This prodigy was engaged in combat with a disciple of the Sanqing Immortal Sect, and although he tried to turn his head, it was too late to react. He could only watch as the heavy club fell upon his head, his mouth twitching as he fainted.
THUD! THUD! THUD!
After several dull impacts, a small group of prodigies from the various Great Immortal Gates had fallen, finally provoking a reaction.
"Damn it! It's a sneak attack!"
"Who's clubbing us from behind?"
"Damn, this thing is so tough it's making my hand ache!"
"It's not human, it's a Puppet… Who's pulling the strings?"
"Its club is so huge and tough! I can't block it!"
The crowd immediately fell into chaos as their momentum faltered.
Seeing this, Xiang Kunlun and the others, though confused, seized the opportunity to charge forward. "Brothers, attack! Take down these scumbags!"
One side's morale was soaring while the other was terrified, fearing a sudden club to the back of the head at any moment. The situation instantly became one-sided.
"Everyone, stay calm! Let's take down these Sanqing disciples first! OW—" The blue-robed youth furiously tried to regain control, but before he could finish his sentence, his head throbbed. Darkness enveloped his vision, and he fell straight to the ground.
With this blow, their will to fight was completely extinguished. A few disciples hastily picked up the blue-robed youth and scurried away like rats into the jungle, moving with incredible speed.
Xiang Kunlun and his men did not pursue. Instead, they arranged for their injured martial brothers to be cared for. Then, he clasped his hands toward the empty, dense forest. "I wonder which noble warrior lent us their aid. Might you reveal yourself?"
There was no response. The forest remained silent, as if nothing had happened.
"Strange, who is helping us?" the Sanqing disciples wondered aloud, completely puzzled.
Just then, a Sanqing disciple rushed in from the woods, his expression panicked. "Senior Brother Xiang! Senior Brother Xiao from the Formation Sect and Senior Brother Chen from the Alchemy Sect have been ambushed! The situation is critical and they're calling for reinforcements!"
Xiang Kunlun was stunned. "They've been ambushed as well? How many attackers are there?"
The disciple replied, "A lot! Nearly a hundred!"
Recalling the recent events, Xiang Kunlun's pupils shrank as a grim premonition formed in his mind.
***
This was an island in the middle of a lake.
Xiao Yu and over twenty other Sanqing disciples stood back to back in a tight circle. Surrounding them were nearly a hundred figures in varied attire, each with a fierce and powerful aura. It was clear they came from different Immortal Sects, yet for some unknown reason, they had joined forces to attack them.
"What exactly do these people want?"
"They want to rob us and beat us!"
"It's like they hold a personal grudge against us..."
Xiao Yu had already set up a Formation, using it to contend with the attackers. He was managing to hold out for now, but his opponents were too numerous and their experts too strong. If this continued, defeat was only a matter of time.
From a high vantage point, several figures looked down at the scene with cold sneers.
"The Sanqing Immortal Sect is nothing special after all!"
"The era of Sanqing is long past. This generation of disciples isn't weak, but there are only one or two who could be considered true, top-tier prodigies…"
"With such a shallow foundation, how are they qualified to take so many slots? It's a complete waste!"
"I don't know what the other Immortal Sects over here were thinking, letting them run wild for so long. If the Sanqing headquarters were in our territory, they wouldn't even be able to step out their front gate!"
"I heard… the Sanqing disciples began moving as a group very early on. After only about seven days, they were all able to act freely! At that time, no other Immortal Sect could stand against them!"
"They must have used some shameful trick!"
"Now, the tables have turned…"
At that moment, the rhythm of the battle was suddenly disrupted.
"OW!"
"Who—who ambushed me?"
"Damn it, there's a Puppet here! Who let it loose?"
"This Puppet is ferocious! Take it down!"
"I can't! It's too tough! Ow…"
A series of screams erupted as figures fell from the sky, plummeting into the lake and sending up great splashes of water.
The exceptional talents watching from above looked on with shocked expressions. "What's going on? Where did that Puppet come from?"
"What a formidable Puppet! It's immune to blades and spears, and even Spells have no effect on it!"
"This is bad, it's coming for us!"
"Hmph! A mere Puppet! I'd like to see just how strong it really is!" An arrogant prodigy, unconvinced, drew a horse-slaying saber and furiously charged forward. The light from his saber fell like a crashing star, sweeping in all directions.
Giant waves rose in the lake as white froth surged toward the sky. It was as if every drop of water had transformed into ferocious saber intent. This prodigy was named Zheng Xuan, ranked sixty-sixth on the Golden Core Ranking and famous for his domineering saber techniques and formidable strength.
CLANG!
A sharp sound of metal striking metal rang out.
Zheng Xuan looked as if he had seen a ghost. The entirely golden Puppet had caught his saber, binding him as if with invisible shackles, leaving him unable to move. He exerted his full power, unleashing a terrifying blade qi, but he could not break free. He couldn't even leave a white mark on the Puppet's body.
The Puppet suddenly exerted a tremendous force, yanking Zheng Xuan toward it. Then, lifting its greatclub, it bashed him on the head several times.
BONK! BONK! BONK!
After three hits, Zheng Xuan's head swelled up with large lumps, as if he were growing horns. Seeing stars, his mouth askew and his eyes crooked, he passed out and sank to the bottom of the lake.
This scene struck fear into the hearts of everyone watching. A famous expert on the Golden Core Ranking had been knocked unconscious by the Puppet with such brutal simplicity, as if it were bullying a child.
