Sheng Qiangwei was enormously excited that the club received applications less than two hours after its creation. However, she maintained a calm exterior, asking, "Are you two interested in joining the martial arts club?"
"Yes."
"Please have a seat——Actually, you'd better stand." Looking at the dust-covered chairs, Sheng Qiangwei felt somewhat embarrassed, and then asked, "Your names?"
"Xia Xin, Xia Qi."
"Your major?"
"Intelligence major."
"So, you're both in the Intelligence Navigation major?"
"Yes."
"Oh..." Sheng Qiangwei gave a soft grunt of acknowledgement, playing with her pen as if it mirrored her fast-spinning thoughts.
Intelligence Navigators belonged to the Sky Network system of the Interstellar Fleet, and martial arts club was at the other extreme. Such a combination was quite rare in military academies. These two had delicate features and seemed gentle and cultured, which made their choice of the martial arts club particularly puzzling to Sheng Qiangwei. "Can you explain your intentions?"
"Well...we don't really have a specific goal." Xia Qi, the older sister, replied in a thoughtful tone. Xia Xin added, "Perhaps to give back to Sir Feng."
"Sir Feng, are you referring to... Feng Yi?"
"Yes."
The sisters' responses left Sheng Qiangwei dumbfounded. How did that guy become 'Sir Feng' again? He certainly casts a broad net. However, she knew better than to pry further. After completing the simple application process, as soon as they had left the room, another figure elegantly entered.
Upon seeing the newcomer, who was slightly on the portly side, immediately picked up a mop as if it were a weapon, adopting a defensive stance: "What do you want? This is a martial arts club. If you're here to fight, I won't turn you down."
A silvery, bell-like laughter was the response to his question. "Am I really so scary?"
"Not at all. Actually, you look quite adorable when you smile." To describe a witch as adorable, this guy is really something.
"Angelina, what brings you here?"
"Same as them, I am here to apply." She indicated Xia sisters with her fingers.
"I suspect your real purpose is not with the martial arts club itself. I must refuse. Please leave."
Frankly, Angelina wasn't particularly bothered about being refused. As Sheng Qiangwei had rightly deduced, her goal was Feng Yi. 'This woman has sharp discernment,' she considered.
"By the way, where did that guy run off to?" She blatantly ignored Sheng Qiangwei and turned to Elvis with her question.
"Feng Yi is probably napping on the rooftop. As for which rooftop, you'll have to find out yourself." Elvis replied honestly, knowing that Feng Yi enjoyed afternoon naps.
The wake-up bell had already rung; it was now just a matter of gathering everyone. Unable to locate him immediately, Angelina thanked them and quickly left the clubroom, promising Sheng Qiangwei that she would visit again.
A few minutes later, countless students assembled promptly on the main parade ground. Basic drills like marching in step were mandatory for all freshmen. However, in the Wind Thunder Military Academy, they were only conducted for formality. The expectations weren't as rigorous as they usually would be since it was a special period, and the drill sergeants focused more on the major subjects within the training.
Seeing the stern face of the Sergeant Major, all the students felt overwhelmed, particularly remembering the morning's grueling prone advancing drill. It felt like they had half-died during the exercise, their arms still aching severely.
"At ease, attention——First group, step forward." At the order from the Drill sergeant, twenty students took a large step forward, among them, Feng Yi.
"Dismissed." The drill sergeant's next words caused a stir among the students. Lifting his eyes to survey the group, his voice suddenly boomed, "What are you all talking about? Do you think this is your backyard? If you have an issue, report it. If not, then shut up."
"Report."
"Step forward."
"Sergeant, why are we training while these people can stand and rest at their original spots?" one of the students arrogantly voiced the question that was in everyone's mind.
"Good question." The Sergeant Major smiled coldly, "You are brave. I like brave soldiers. Anybody else curious about this?"
One second, two seconds...ten seconds passed, and the once-noisy group was now quiet. Anyone could tell from the Sergeant Major's tone that he was planning to use this brave soul as an example. At this point, speaking out would truly be foolish. If he hadn't called attention to it, perhaps others might have spoken up, but now, one scapegoat was more than enough.
The Sergeant Major looked at the student and said, "These are outstanding new recruits with exceptional qualities. They enjoy the privileges that come along with that. At this academy, qualities can take you anywhere——and in this team, I set the rules."
"You."
"Yes."
"Dismissed."
"Ah? Yes!"
The student who reported the issue was dumbfounded by the drill sergeant's sudden dismissal. However, an order is an order, especially when it's a good one.
Seeing this, the other students turned green with envy. "Report!"
"Step forward."
"Sergeant, he is not as good as the others, why is he dismissed?"
The Sergeant Major didn't reply. Instead, his gaze returned to the group. "Does anyone else have the same question?"
The team was even quieter now. Clearly, the Sergeant Major, after having given one lucky idiot a chance, would not give a second chance to anyone else. As a result, no one stepped forward.
Seeing this, the Sergeant Major finally answered, "Because he was brave. I like brave soldiers, whether it's on the battlefield or training ground——you, dismissed."
"Why...even me?"
"Hehe, young man, in the military, there is no why. There is only obedience or disobedience. I admire those rebellious bastards. Remember, today is the first day of training, and this is an exception I made for you all."
"Yes."
"Now let's proceed with the training."
"Report!"
"Report! Report..."
Just as the Sergeant Major finished his sentence, several more reports rang out. "What else do you have to say?"
"Sergeant, the Wind Thunder Academy is never short of brave soldiers. I have something to say."
Hearing the word 'brave', the drill sergeant, a man with a face full of rough features, actually showed a touch of gratification. He nodded, "Who else shares the same question as this student?"
Suddenly, the team was filled with students announcing their reports.
The Sergeant Major raised his hand to silence everyone, "Those who have a question, take a step forward."
Watching from a distance, Feng Yi suddenly understood! So it was like that! This drill sergeant was indeed a trap. In order to intimidate beginners, he started off with a benign facade and slowly lowered them into the trap. Even if someone didn't dare to report it, they would unknowingly take a step forward at the 'take a step forward' command, taking it as a stroke of luck.
Within a few moments, there was an outstanding student with questions. He had more or less expected this roundabout method the drill sergeant was using. When the Sergeant asked whether the team agreed with the student's opinion, the answer was a resounding yes. But when the sergeant asked if anyone disagreed, the group was yet again silent.
"Each one of you is exceptional. Dismiss..." The ecstatic students started laughing. This drill sergeant was easygoing. However, before they could finish their laughter, the drill sergeant dropped his next line, immediately freezing the smiles on their faces, "...is not an option."
