Marvelous Mecha

Chapter 1030: Countdown to Crossing

Not long after, the ground shook violently... More than a dozen beasts, each the size of a car, charged at the crowd, with a leading adult male, which seemed even bigger than a family SUV.

Finally, Feng Yi made his move. With experienced ease, he quickly pulled out a frozen banana and threw it forcefully towards the dumb beast closest to them.

The others watched in Mind Stabilization... observing the appearance of the dumb beast and its black-grey scaly armor, though it seemed to be wrapped in a layer of soft fur, undulating like a wave drum in the bleak, whitish cold wind, seemingly endless like the winter waves.

Zhang Xiaobo's attention was completely captured by these dumb beasts; at this moment, all he wanted to do was complain about how one banana could possibly bribe such a beast—it was totally illogical.

Based on his life experience, he briefly analyzed the situation with three possible reasons in mind, all concluding that it was impossible for the dumb beast to be satisfied with just one banana.

The first reason, the banana was too small. Whether in terms of energy, sugar, or vitamins, it was not sufficient to sustain the energy requirements of such large creatures, let alone a beast as big as a car. Thus, Zhang Xiaobo's initial feeling was that it was impossible, absolutely impossible.

However, when Feng Yi threw a banana to the dumb beast, he noticed that the leading dumb beast, upon seeing the banana, actually reacted. It stopped running, opened its huge mouth, and directly swallowed the banana.

Now, Zhang Xiaobo was thinking, could one banana really be enough? Forget one banana, even if everyone had a bunch of bananas, it still wouldn't be enough to feed such a massive creature.

It was the first time Zhang Xiaobo doubted Feng Yi's words, he strongly questioned the authenticity of what Feng Yi described, but after the dumb beast ate the banana and then showed no further violent reaction, instead walking over to lick Feng Yi with its stinky tongue, Zhang Xiaobo's doubts instantly dissipated. Unexpectedly, the dumb beast not only ate just one banana but also behaved like a dog; if it had a tail, it could probably wag it hard enough to kill two men—a plot that spontaneously emerged in Zhao Xiaobo's mind.

But this was only the first reason.

The second reason was very scientific. Because Zhang Xiaobo knew that in such a survival of the fittest environment, animals weren't likely to be herbivores, but rather omnivores.

In fact, every species on Earth can be considered an omnivore. Usually, goats, cows, and horses seem to live on grass, but that's because they don't have the capability to hunt other animals. Thus, over millions of years, their body structures evolved from the giant dinosaurs and monsters as the air became thinner and less oxygen-rich to the sizes we see now.

However, this doesn't mean they don't eat meat. Herbivores can also be scavengers. The reason they don't eat meat isn't because they don't want to, but because there is no meat available.

From our history, it can be understood that at the end of each era, some species manage to survive, and the reason they can survive in a survival of the fittest environment is due to the disruption of the food chain. They have to shift from being carnivores or omnivores to herbivores to adapt to new environments.

But the dumb beast is different. This monster possesses extraordinary speed, unparalleled strength, heavy armor, and a goofy appearance. Just from these traits, it has many advantages; not to mention that even if a carnivore faced it alone, there's almost no chance it could defeat the dumb beast.

Yet here is a creature, with attack power, explosive power, and agility, which, bizarrely, prefers to eat grass and fruits. If one hadn't seen it with their own eyes, it would be hard to believe if told.

As for the third point, there are many reasons, really fitting the old saying, "A motherless child has a long story." But to cut a long story short, if the dumb beasts were strictly herbivorous, then they could not possibly survive in such harsh environments.

Although the Colonial Planet's cold temperate zones also support the growth of plants such as grass, such plants are very scarce. Just how scarce can be broadly inferred from what Zhang Xiaobo has heard directly from Feng Yi.

After all, Feng Yi just mentioned that this issue was discussed with local hunters. At one time, the dumb beasts could form an uncountable mass, dark and dense, numbering at least tens of thousands.

Now, the reason why there are only a few dumb beasts left is actually quite simple: due to the local food chain being depleted and severe shrinkage of grazing lands, the cold regions can no longer support such large populations. Those that could die did die, and those that survived are struggling in the cracks of survival; without assurance of tomorrow, they struggle day by day, having food today but not sure about tomorrow, and even less sure about the day after tomorrow.
