Marvelous Mecha

Chapter 1024: Suspicion

"Wait for me, I'm starting up the machine right now and heading over," the Blade Warrior told the chubby one through the communicator, asking him not to panic as she was on her way to provide support. It wouldn't have killed him to squat out a night, given his constitution, but freezing someone solid is not really acceptable either.

So, the Blade Warrior decided to drive the Time-Space Transfer Device to the wilderness area of Zone 7. It might be seen by the occasional passerby, but with a disguise mechanism installed on the device, it would be basically unnoticeable. Holding this thought, the Blade Warrior arrived beside the chubby one in just a few minutes.

"Come on up and warm yourself."

"What about our agreement...?"

"Don't worry, this lady isn't going to welch on a deal."

Hearing this, Chubby Zhang Xiaobo finally felt somewhat relieved, and changing the subject, he said, "But come to think of it, why are you so obsessed with chasing that kid? We don't really need to compete with him, right?"

Just thinking of Feng Yi hiding in the dark got the Blade Warrior enraged. Of course, right now she didn't realize her adversary was Feng Yi. Clenching her fists in frustration and biting her silver teeth, she said, "Our monitoring devices were all ruined by that bastard, and we must take back control of this situation. Hmph, just wait until I show him."

Well then, it appeared the Blade Warrior was truly infuriated. Seeing that he couldn't dissuade her, the chubby one shrugged helplessly and proceeded to execute her original plan, for it was true that one is beholden to others for the favors they owe. If you accept someone's kindness, you have to do their bidding. It's only right and proper.

Of course, the Blade Warrior didn't let Chubby stay outside overnight on duty, but in exchange, he had to keep a 24-hour surveillance on the area. If that bastard showed up, he was to wake her immediately. Those were the orders.

Hence, obeying the Blade Warrior's instructions, Chubby decided to fish in troubled waters. By the second day, after 24 hours had passed, there was still no trace of the man. Instead, some local wildlife of the Colonial Planet was spotted.

The next day, Chubby faithfully reported his observations to the Blade Warrior. Receiving this news, the Blade Warrior was somewhat surprised. Had that guy frozen to death?

It was well-known that Colonial Planet 103 simply couldn't have modern anti-cold clothing. The best one could hope for was a coat over a fur jacket. In other words, the possibilities for the scoundrel lurking in the snowy fields were limited to three.

The first possibility was that he ran away. Of course, the Blade Warrior herself thought this almost impossible because not all of her monitors were destroyed. She had been conducting macro surveillance and a vast snowfield couldn't possibly have been overlooked. That's why she dismissed this possibility at first. Still, one can never be too sure, and she began to wonder if she was too confident in her judgment.

The second possibility was that the fellow might have already frozen to death. Daytime temperatures below minus 30 degrees Celsius, exacerbated by sunlight, could actually feel a bit warmer, but the nights were different. The nights here dropped below minus 36 degrees, and with the slashing cold winds, the perceived temperature could dip beyond minus 40.

What does minus 40 degrees entail? It seems that ordinary people don't fully grasp it, and it has a lot to do with one's living environment. Many people in tropical regions often think their environment is colder due to higher humidity levels in winter because temperate regions have heating in every household whereas they do not, they only have air conditioning.

For instance, when the weather forecast in the tropics reports 10 degrees Celsius, the actual felt temperature there is zero degrees. Thus, this group tends to believe that the humid air makes their environment colder than the temperate zones.

Such thinking is utter nonsense! These people don't realize that not everyone in cold regions has heating. They have to go outside during the day too, and in the vast snowfields, when caught in a blizzard with visibility less than one meter, it's nearly impossible for someone outdoors to make it back, as one would freeze out there.

Even on sunny days, such low temperatures can exceed the cold of a freezer. In the severe cold of minus 40 degrees, pouring a bucket of water into the air would result in it freezing before hitting the ground. Ordinary people often cannot endure long in these extreme conditions; even wearing a parka, it is hard to survive through the night.

What could endure a night in such conditions? Clearly not humans, at least not average humans. This might seem like a digression, but it is also educational because knowledge is power.

Animals like penguins aren't afraid of the cold. Penguins rely on a layer of fat and their feathers to prevent heat loss. As explained in educational materials: "Despite the harsh cold of Antarctica, penguins, having endured millions of years of blizzards, have developed feathers that overlap tightly like scales. This specialized plumage not only keeps out seawater, but also withstands the defense against insulation even when the temperature drops to nearly minus 100 degrees Celsius. Therefore, penguins aren't bothered by the cold.

Penguin feathers generally provide excellent insulation and significantly reduce the rate of heat loss in icy waters. Moreover, some penguins can control blood flow to their limbs and have well-developed axillary veins to help warm the blood returning to their hearts."

In extremely cold conditions, penguins huddle together on land to stay warm and move around within the group to change their position. Each penguin species has its own optimal temperature range, and their lives are affected when the temperature exceeds or falls below this range."
