Apocalypse: Hero of Potato Fields

Chapter 197: This City Is Really Nice

Within Lille Camp City.

Just as Lin Yi was about to leave, three more "economically capable" survivors approached.

They were all Professionals, two of whom had some Third Level equipment, while the third wore Second Level armor.

Lin Yi didn't pay much attention to them, so he headed straight to the next checkpoint.

A soldier there was using a small device to check people's IDs. Once everything was confirmed, he let them through.

Lin Yi passed through the gate and saw...

A vibrant city!

The streets were crowded with people who looked clean and happy.

Cars were driving on the streets, but most were military vehicles, and some soldiers were patrolling, though they called themselves "Military Police."

They all wore System Equipment with bright blue uniforms over their armor.

Looking around, Lin Yi spotted a café...

He went in. It was clean and tidy, with only three customers.

Background music played pleasantly, and a middle-aged man behind the bar was demonstrating barista skills.

A cute young waitress was attending to one of the customers.

Lin Yi found a seat and looked at the menu.

The young waitress hopped over to the new customer.

"Sir, can I help you with something?"

"Help me choose something?"

"Sure, what do you like to eat?"

"I see you have steak and pasta here. Where does your steak come from?"

Lin Yi noticed a glint in the girl's eyes when he mentioned meat.

The girl was about in her teens, with a round face.

"From mutated wild boar, the meat is very delicious!"

"Got it. And what about these bread rolls? Do they have fillings, or are they just plain bread?"

"Just plain bread."

"Then I'd like a cup of tea, a steak with pasta, and a bread roll."

"Okay!" The girl cheerfully ran off.

Lin Yi stroked his chin as he browsed the menu.

The prices were simply outrageous...

A bread roll for thirteen Coins, a steak for fifty Coins, a cup of tea for four Coins...

On the menu, there were only baked goods and mutated meat, nothing else.

It said they had fish, but there was a little red tag next to it, meaning it was sold out.

The food he ordered arrived quickly.

The bread and pasta were fresh and tasty, the meat wasn't bad either, juicy with a bit of fat.

Lin Yi didn't like bloody steak, so his steak was cooked well.

While eating, he glanced at that brochure.

The city had a series of regulations prohibiting murder, kidnapping, theft, robbery, etc.

Everyone must have a place to live, and anyone found sleeping outside would be sent to the adaptation center.

All residents were required to prove their economic capability weekly, or else they'd also be sent to the adaptation center.

In summary, one small misstep would send you to the adaptation center!

The brochure also contained some information about the city itself.

There was a factory here that specifically bred edible larvae... this dish was also on the menu, priced at seven Coins, served with pasta.

But the city's main food source was an edible biomass factory.

Lin Yi immediately thought of biomass obtained from zombie corpses...

Studying the city's map, Lin Yi noticed there were some residential areas with apartments for sale.

But he didn't plan to stay here long-term, so he chose a middle-grade hotel.

Driving in Lille requires a license, so Lin Yi had to park his motorcycle in a parking lot, costing five Coins for five days.

No cheaper option was available... after paying the meal bill and leaving one Coin as a tip.

He started heading towards the hotel.

After walking for five minutes, he saw a taxi in a designated area waiting for passengers.

The driver was an elderly black man who agreed to take him to the hotel for two Coins.

He silently drove Lin Yi to the destination and then returned to his original spot.

Upon entering the hotel, Lin Yi received bad news.

"Due to the influx of refugees, we currently have no vacant rooms... we only have the royal suite available, forty Coins per day."

"Just give me that royal suite then."

"Are you sure?" The front desk girl asked in surprise.

Not many people could afford forty Coins a night for a hotel room, regardless of how spacious or well-furnished it was.

"Hurry up."

Lin Yi felt a bit pained; the Shelter currently only had about 450,000 remaining in balance.

He paid for three days in advance and quickly checked in.

His personal file now showed he had a place to stay for three days, even including his exact address and room price...

The suite indeed had a royal flair.

It had four rooms, including a spacious living room, two bedrooms, and a gym.

There was also a balcony with a decent view of the cemetery...

"Melanie, report the situation."

"Boss! We can hardly believe how great this place is — the living facilities here are not even worse than there..."

"Hmm, I've noticed too."

Lin Yi nodded, finding a sofa to sit on.

This camp indeed wasn't bad, just like the strict federal government before the apocalypse, with the most obvious being the class system...

Melanie continued her report.

"...The suite has no cameras, but the city is full of them. I saw some anti-aircraft turrets and radar towers on some buildings' rooftops. I also watched their surveillance screens and tablets, closely monitoring every resident and refugee in the city..."

"There's nothing surprising about it; they're at war with the Americans. Have you learned anything else?"

"No, just hearsay from the refugee convoy, but you've already heard that."

"Understood, keep observing. Get Immanuel, Chen Youyou, and Natasha over here, let them look at the city layout and learn, so I can use it."

"They're with me all the time!"

"Okay."

After resting for half an hour, Lin Yi set off for the main marketplace.

There was a taxi outside the hotel.

Lin Yi didn't hesitate to pay two coins; the marketplace was far, and he didn't want to walk the long distance.

On the taxi ride, Lin Yi noticed several burned buildings and a crater that looked like it was made by a ballistic missile.

The taxi driver, seeing the curious look of his passenger, said angrily, "It's all the Americans' fault!"

...

The marketplace was inside a giant warehouse store, divided into different areas.

Lin Yi was very interested in the System Equipment Area.

This area consisted of stalls in a large room, with various shops around.

There were at least a thousand people.

These stalls sold everything from Reward Eggs and monster parts to equipment and ammunition.

But Lin Yi decided to go straight to the shops rather than waste time in the chaotic stalls. After all, the shops looked better, and there weren't as many people.

The first shop he went to sold bows. They sold System Bows, self-made bows, and hunting bows.

Lin Yi gasped when he saw the price of a Second Level Bow.

500 coins!

And a Third Level Bow cost 3000 coins!

An arrow cost one coin each.

A magic arrow cost ten coins each.

They also sold Archer Skill Books.

A whole stack of them, each priced at 20000 coins!

Lin Yi went to the next shop selling melee weapons.

They sold—

Baseball Bat: 50 coins.

Lucky Axe: 300 coins.

Second Level Sword: 350 coins.

Third Level Sword: 2000 coins.

There were no Swordsman Skills, at least not on Earth, so this shop sold skills to help Professionals with melee combat.

Among them was Lin Yi's mastered "Combat Reflex," priced at 50000 coins.

There were also other skills that enhanced body attributes, like Extreme Power, Extreme Endurance, and Extreme Agility.

Each skill cost 1500 coins.

Lin Yi wasn't interested in these skills.

They indeed enhanced a person's attributes, but a Second Level Extreme Power would make someone as muscular as a bodybuilder on steroids.

Extreme Agility would make someone lean and strong, while Extreme Endurance would make someone look like a potato.

There's also "Extreme Vitality," a rare skill, but this shop didn't sell it.

Lin Yi saw a skill he was interested in.

[Wind Speed]

[A rare skill that reduces wind resistance and increases movement speed!]

"Interesting..."

If a person could run very fast, they might not be able to maneuver their body well because their reaction speed wouldn't keep up with their body's speed.

But if this skill were combined with "Combat Reflex"...

Wait, can skills be used together?

This thought was now firmly planted in Lin Yi's mind, refusing to leave.

There were also Transformation Skills, each costing 5000 coins.

The "Stone Skin" skill was priced at a whopping 70000 coins, but Lin Yi had seen the effect when Solomon used it, so he was considering buying it.

But seventy thousand coins... it was just too expensive.

Next was a shop selling Magic Skill Books.

Each book was 15000 coins, and they also sold Second Level Energy Cores, each at 500 coins.

After that, he went to a shop called "World of Weapon Smiths."

They sold equipment made by Weapon Smiths, including melee weapons and various armors.

[High-quality Second Level Sword]

A weapon forged by a skilled craftsman, with good balance and durability.

Made by Dante.

Main Attributes:

Attack Power 16, Durability 25/25.

Weight 3.5 pounds.

[Second Level Mutated Boar Hide Armor]

Reliable armor made from durable mutated beast hide. Provides good protection against slashing and stabbing.

Made by Dante.

Main Attributes:

Attack Power 10, Durability 22/22.

[Weight 4.6 pounds]

"Not bad," Lin Yi muttered to himself.

This sword's attack power was slightly higher than a Second Level System Sword, and the armor was slightly better, too.

But these were the only interesting items; the rest were obviously trash.

At this point, a male shop assistant approached.

He was in his forties, wearing black casual pants, a white shirt, and a red tie...
