I Have a Golden Crow

Chapter 55: 048 A Twin Flower

Watching Du Yu turn his head and charge over, Fan Changhong panicked a little: "Don't run this way!"

Under the hood, Du Yu grinned, "Heh."

The Demon Spirit Realm, as a battle paradise, naturally wouldn't stop a fight.

Whether it's Demon Tamers fighting Demon Beasts, or fighting each other, the rules allow it. After all, growing and sharpening yourself in battle is the whole point of newbie training.

The difference is, with wild Demon Beasts, you can kill or be killed. But between Demon Tamers, the fight must stop once victory or defeat is decided.

As long as the battle is out in the open, and not a premeditated ambush, robbery, or murder, the soldiers won't intervene.

"You…" Fan Changhong hadn't finished speaking when he saw, from the distant grass, a bright green snake shoot out and launch itself!

It really is a Double-leaf Grass Snake!?

"Back, back, all of you get back!" Fan Changhong hurriedly retreated, and the two Little Wind Eagles circling above his head immediately followed their master's command, swooping down to bump his forehead.

This kind of command made it obvious he didn't want to fight, and definitely didn't want the Little Wind Eagles to attract hatred—birds and snakes are natural enemies, after all.

"Xiaoyan, stop attacking." Du Yu also called Little You Ying back into his body, running as he shouted toward the distant camp, "Peak of Mortal Level Double-leaf Grass Snake! The one invaded by cold Qi and lost its reason! All of you, get away!"

"Run!"

"Ah… Get out, quick, quick, quick!" Instantly, several newbie Demon Tamers in the camp panicked and rushed off into the distance.

This is the Newbie Demon Spirit Realm, and the camp overseer, Fan Changhong, is at best a Demon Tamer Prentice·Peak Stage. If he were stronger, he wouldn't even be allowed in here.

The newbies aren't stupid—they don't believe "Mr. Commander" can take on a berserk Double-leaf Grass Snake. While the enemy is far away, they quickly teamed up and ran for it.

"Shit!" Fan Changhong's face froze, and he stopped backing up, once again drawing his Demon Soldier Bow.

Go play with the Double-leaf Grass Snake yourself! Every last one of you damn Paper Crane Disciples, live or die, I don't care!

What Fan Changhong couldn't understand was that Du Yu was also glaring hard at him, getting closer and closer—and Du Yu acted like he didn't even notice he was being aimed at.

This just confirmed Fan Changhong's belief: these Paper Crane Disciples are all lucky idiots. Just look at this—these guys are totally reckless, not a hint of combat instinct!

Of course, Fan Changhong had no idea—Du Yu was truly confident he could dodge this arrow!

"Hiss!" From behind, the Double-leaf Grass Snake let out a raspy roar, whipping its Double-leaf Flying Saber over with a wicked swing.

"Ying!" Without needing Little Fen Yang's instruction, Xiaoyan, perched on Du Yu's shoulder, chirped loudly.

With their contract, Du Yu quickly dodged left.

The Double-leaf Flying Saber slashed past, right where Du Yu had been running, stabbing straight at Fan Changhong ahead.

Fan Changhong was just about to shoot when his face suddenly changed. He couldn't care about much else and dodged in a swift dive—his movements smooth, showing he wasn't half bad.

Before he'd even gotten up, he shouted angrily, "Damn it, run somewhere else, stop bringing it toward me!"

Under the hood, Du Yu's mouth was still twisted in a grin: "Heh."

What's wrong?

Isn't this what you wanted when you blocked my way?

Du Yu sprinted with all his might, turning past Fan Changsheng and then swinging around behind Fan Changhong.

Now, two men and one snake formed a straight line.

"Hiss!" The Double-leaf Grass Snake sped after them, suddenly raising its head—it launched another Double-leaf Flying Saber.

Fan Changhong barely had time to get up and had to dive aside again, cursing breathlessly as he narrowly avoided disaster: "I've really had enough of you dumbasses…"

A crisp "ding" rang out!

The Demon Breath Battle Robe on Fan Changhong's body shook violently!

The flying Double-leaf Flying Saber missed the man, but a Fire Arrow shot from behind nailed right into his right shoulder!

Whoosh~

Silver flames instantly spread, furiously ripping at Fan Changhong's Demon Breath Battle Robe.

Rage flared up in Fan Changhong's chest, but he still had a shred of reason. At such a critical moment, he couldn't care about Du Yu. He scrambled to his feet and wildly dashed in the direction of the Twin Trees.

As he ran frantically for the Twin Trees' protection, he slapped at the ever-spreading Silver Fire on his body.

Du Yu's voice carried from behind, pure mockery: "Don't run that way, don't disturb the Twin Trees!"

The Demon Breath Battle Robe kept cracking all over. Fan Changhong forced more Demon Breath into his robe, shouting angrily, "You just wait!"

Du Yu strode after him: "I can't wait…"

Before he finished, a loud "PA!" exploded!

The sound was so loud the ground itself seemed to tremble.

Du Yu stumbled a little and quickly turned to look back—only to see a shocking sight before his eyes.

The Twin Trees made their move!

If it were a normal Demon Beast chasing Du Yu, the Twin Trees wouldn't have gone for the kill. It would keep its usual style, separating both sides—no bloodshed allowed within its territory.

But clearly, the Twin Trees realized the Double-leaf Grass Snake was different. A tree branch lashed down viciously.

It was as if it bore a personal grudge—the ground below was scored with a deep whip mark!

"Du Yu, Du Yu~"

"Ah." Du Yu stared, mouth gaping.

"The Double-leaf Grass Snake's dead," Little Fen Yang whispered. She sounded a little disappointed—not getting to see the Twin Trees' bark stripped away.

Du Yu: "..."

This is just humiliating. I was rolling, stumbling, running for my life—only for the Twin Trees to smack the Double-leaf Grass Snake dead with a single lash!

I really am trash, huh!

Peak of Mortal Level VS Spirit Level Peak.

A difference of three whole major levels. The outcome was already set.

Really, even if the Double-leaf Grass Snake was Spirit Level Peak too, same level as the Twin Trees, it still wouldn't stand a chance—the species gap is just too great.

One is the Mother of the Demon Spirit Realm, the other a Demon Beast that lives here…

"Swish!"

Flexible branches rose high. In a whoosh of air and flying grass chips, the snake's body twisted and its head was smashed to pieces.

As the branch flicked away, the snake's corpse—and a blood-stained Demon Crystal—were thrown up into the air, caught together.

Du Yu's mind flashed, and he dashed toward where the Demon Crystal would fall.

Just as he reached to catch the falling Demon Crystal, a tree branch was quicker—curling around the little Demon Crystal right above his head.

"Huh?" Du Yu spun around, following the long branch's path, eyes on the majestic Twin Trees in the distance.

The branch slowly retracted—it clearly didn't want any creature touching this ice-cold Demon Crystal.

This bloodied Demon Crystal really was unusual; inside the bloody wrapping, there was a thick gray mist—this must be the mysterious cold Qi.

As the branch withdrew, a white flower floated down.

For a moment, Du Yu was stunned.

He watched as the blossom spun down like a tiny parasol, landing gently toward his chest.

At this moment, Du Yu balked.

He backed up two steps, not daring to reach out for the little glowing white flower.

The bloody snake carcass fell beside him—a gruesome picture, showing just how terrifying the Twin Trees' power was.

It also meant: I'm within the Twin Trees' strike range.

I'd dare pick up the Demon Crystal, but the flower? No way!

Du Yu had seen would-be flower-pickers meet ugly ends—the Twin Trees taught them a harsh lesson. If not for its great mercy, those two young Demon Tamers would've been whipped to death!

The white flower landed softly, spinning in place under a faint breeze.

Du Yu hesitated for a long moment. The Twin Trees had returned to their original form, and everything around was tranquil once more.

That scene finally gave him a bit of courage!

"This flower fell on its own, I didn't pick it!" Du Yu shouted loudly—not just for show. The highly spiritual Twin Trees should understand human speech.

Du Yu figured—even if what he did really was an affront, after muttering that, the gentle Mother of the Demon Spirit Realm should give him another chance, right?

He slowly crouched, Demon Soldier Silver Fire in hand, very carefully stretching his arm out, using the bow arm and bowstring to hook the little white flower, gently pulling it toward him.

Got it!

Du Yu's heart hammered—he was scared out of his mind, staring at the Twin Trees for any movement. Nothing came—no branches, no attack. The Twin Trees didn't stop him!

Overjoyed, Du Yu quickly pulled the flower in, snatched it up, and turned to run away.

He'd barely turned when he spotted two camouflage-uniformed soldiers standing by a nearby tree.

The older of the two, a male soldier, smiled and nodded at Du Yu. "You're an out-of-class student from this year's Demon Spirit Academy?"

The man's approving gaze was genuine—clearly, he was impressed by Du Yu's performance. After years stationed here, he hadn't seen a rookie like this in a long time.

Du Yu quickly stepped up to the two soldiers, nodding repeatedly.

"No need to run—the flower wouldn't fall so easily. It can only be the Twin Trees' reward for you."

Du Yu blinked in surprise, "Reward for me?"

The older soldier gazed up at the Twin Trees, voice tinged with awe: "The Twin Trees emits the purest Demon Breath, and absolutely loathes insidious Youhan Qi.

If a Demon Beast is only partly invaded by cold Qi, the Twin Trees can be lenient, tolerate the occasional mishap. But one completely infected? That's an unforgivable crime."

"So this flower must be a gift from the Twin Trees, to thank you for luring that monster here—to thank you for helping it clean house."

Du Yu stared blankly at the older soldier. He'd never expected this answer.

The young female soldier beside him smiled. "You're pretty lucky—lots of Demon Beasts get infected by cold Qi, but few are fully contaminated.

And once they're saturated with cold Qi, they grow very fast. The moment one evolves to Earth Level, our people will come eliminate it. This Double-leaf Grass Snake was just about to advance—you wouldn't have lured it here if you were a day or two late."

Lucky?

I nearly died out there in Zone 4, circling trees with a Firefox Hand Cannon, leaping for my damn life, only to be hunted by a Double-leaf Grass Snake all the way to this spot—and that's lucky?

"Hey kid, don't run off!" Far behind, Fan Changhong's angry shout echoed.
