I Have a Golden Crow

Chapter 37: 032 Lush Green

"Instructor Gong." Du Yu walked up to Gong Cheng with a solemn expression. "Thank you for your guidance these past few days."

"Mm." Gong Cheng nodded and looked at the Little Fire Fox on Du Yu's shoulder.

This time, Xiaoyan didn't bare her teeth or make faces. She clearly felt her master's gratitude toward the teacher.

Du Yu opened his mouth, but didn't know what to say next. With no common topics, things actually felt a little awkward.

Should I just do a dance for you?

Or sing 'Thank you, because of you, the four seasons are warm'?

Gong Cheng spoke just in time, "Toward the end of the assessment, you finally showed a bit of the fire young people should have. Personally, I appreciate that."

Du Yu: "Thank you, teacher."

Gong Cheng suddenly changed the subject: "But after observing and getting to know you these past few days, I hope you'll stick with your sly and cunning style—that's the real you. After all, picking the path that's best for you is how you'll go further."

Du Yu: "..."

Truly worthy of being a teacher—he really knows how to talk!

Du Yu thought for a long while but just couldn't figure out whether Gong Cheng was praising him or roasting him.

Gong Cheng lifted his chin slightly, motioning behind Du Yu: "Go on, your Little Assistant is here to get you."

"Oh." Du Yu turned to look—and saw Li Mengnan, eyes slightly red, walking over.

Du Yu was confused. What's up with this girl?

Li Mengnan reached out to hug Xiaoyan, then gave Gong Cheng a shallow bow. "Thank you, teacher. Goodbye, teacher."

"Mm."

Du Yu: "What's wrong? Did someone bully you?"

"Let's go back to the dorm to pack." Li Mengnan said as she started walking toward the dorm.

Du Yu scratched his head and quickly caught up with her. "Li Mengnan, seriously, what's the matter?"

Li Mengnan looked pretty unhappy. "My dad came to pick me up, says he went out of his way and spent a lot of money hiring a whole team—the kind that specializes in mentoring newbies."

The Demon Taming World industry is woven into every part of society.

There are even training agencies like this—specializing in helping rookie Demon Tamers. You could pretty much call them "nannies."

These 30, 40, even 50-year-old Demon Tamers usually didn't have much talent or power and could only mix around in Low Level Demon Spirit Realms all their lives.

Not super talented? No problem, as long as they get the job done.

Not so powerful? As long as they're experienced, it's fine.

With this kind of nanny team helping out, rookie Demon Tamers would get top-notch all-around care, and the training would be really tailored just for them.

If Li Mengnan could join such a team, it would be a huge boost for her growth.

The Yan Organization Li Mengnan formed before, insisting on recruiting Du Yu as her little brother, was all based on the fact that neither of them had power or backing, so they could only stick together to get by.

Who'd have thought, after asking her dad for some allowance and letting slip that she'd become a Demon Tamer, she'd get herself a "Super Dad" out of nowhere?

Li Mengnan pouted. "I told my dad I wanted to bring you onto the team, but they're already at full capacity."

Du Yu nodded gently. He could tell Li Mengnan's dad must've found her a top-notch team. Otherwise, if it was just an ordinary nanny team, money alone could hire them—no reason for all the networking and favors.

Li Mengnan kept her head down, muttering softly, "He said I'm already a transfer student, and to guarantee the team's reputation and training results, they're not accepting any more students."

Du Yu tried to comfort her. "This is a good thing! With this opportunity, you really ought to..."

Before he could finish, Li Mengnan turned to look at him, her expression a bit complicated.

Du Yu smiled and patted her shoulder. "You crying over this? Got into a fight with Uncle?"

"What's to cry about fighting with him? He actually went and tattled to my mom, and she called to scold me!"

Li Mengnan looked down, playing with Xiaoyan's little paws, squishing her paw pads. "Seriously, after being divorced for so many years, now they're suddenly united—acting like one big happy family."

Du Yu: "..."

He thought for a bit, then tried to persuade her: "You really ought to listen to Teacher Li Hong. Uncle must've worked super hard to get you this spot.

And don't worry about me, I'm not a member of your organization anyway. Once you get strong, you can look after me later."

Li Mengnan glanced sideways at Du Yu and kicked open the dorm door. "I'm just sad to say goodbye to Xiaoyan."

Du Yu didn't argue, going along with it. "I'll take really good care of Xiaoyan, you don't have to worry."

Li Mengnan looked down at the Little Fire Fox in her arms, face annoyed. "This little tramp loves whoever she sees—don't think I don't know her? Next time we meet, she might just forget all about me."

"Eee~" Xiaoyan still couldn't understand these complicated human words, but seeing Li Mengnan looking so sad, Xiaoyan tilted her head a little, slipped out a soft pink tongue, and licked Li Mengnan's cheek.

"Total heartbreaker." Li Mengnan tapped Xiaoyan's nose, looking both angry and doting.

Du Yu walked into the dorm, quietly packing his bag, when he suddenly spoke up. "By the way, did you get an invitation from any of the teachers?"

Li Mengnan flopped onto a chair. "What invitation?"

Du Yu: "During this assessment, if a teacher takes a liking to a student, they'll reach out to invite them to become a named disciple in advance."

Li Mengnan asked, confused, "I didn't get invited. Did you?"

Du Yu nodded gently.

Li Mengnan's face lit up but then she acted like it was only natural. "With how amazing you were, getting picked is normal. Which teacher invited you?"

Du Yu shook his head. "I don't know them."

"Just look them up. What's the teacher's name?"

Du Yu quickly said, "I mean, I'm about to be brought into the Demon Spirit Academy teachers' group, get special guidance ahead of time. You have to work hard, too—make the most of this training chance and double your efforts to grow."

"Hmm..." Li Mengnan thought for a second, then pulled out her phone. "So what's the teacher's name?"

Du Yu continued, "Aren't you always trying to be the boss? If you aren't strong enough, your little brothers might rebel, you know."

"I. Got. It! Already!" Li Mengnan glared at Du Yu, "You sound just like my dad. Hurry up and tell me that teacher's name!"

Du Yu fished a slip of paper out of his backpack's side pocket and handed it to Li Mengnan.

Li Mengnan reached out, took it, and looked over the teacher list. "Which one sent you the invitation?"

Du Yu: "All of them."

Li Mengnan blinked in surprise, then turned to look at Du Yu. "You mean, every teacher on this paper invited you?"

Du Yu quietly nodded.

Li Mengnan blinked again, suddenly stood up, and ruffled Du Yu's hair with one hand. "I knew it! My little brother is born gifted—invincible in the world!"

"Stop, stop." Du Yu quickly dodged out from under Li Mengnan's devilish hand.

She quickly scanned through the teacher names and picked the one she liked most. "Yang Qingqing? That's such a pretty name—sounds fresh and green."

As she spoke, Li Mengnan quickly typed in "Yang Qingqing."

"This teacher looks familiar, isn't she... isn't she..." Li Mengnan had just opened up the staff bio before a familiar face popped up. "Isn't that the teacher who slapped Lin Shihang and carried him off the field?"

Du Yu realized then—this was the "Aunt Qingqing" Lin Shiyi had talked about.

"This teacher has amazing presence!" Li Mengnan forgot all about the bio write-up, going straight for the photos. "She looks much quieter in the pictures than in real life."

Du Yu checked out the phone, too. "I heard she's Lin Shihang's aunt."

"Huh?"

"Yeah, she's the biological sister of Lin Shihang's mom. Lin Shiyi calls her Aunt too."

Li Mengnan thought about it. "You beat Lin Shihang up so bad—maybe she's taking you under her wing just to mess with you later."

Du Yu shook his head. "No way. She's a Demon Spirit Academy teacher, super powerful and respected. She wouldn't stoop to picking on a nobody like me."

Du Yu scratched his head, then added, "Plus, back on the battlefield, she actually praised me."

Li Mengnan gave Du Yu a look of sheer disdain. "That's why you're so hopeless, Du Yu. You think you can tell what other people are thinking?

I remember when I turned eight. For my birthday, my dad and mom celebrated together. They both seemed super happy. The next day, they got divorced."

Du Yu: "..."

Li Mengnan stared at him like he was an idiot. "Get it?"

Seeing Li Mengnan looking all like-nothing-in-this-world-is-a-mystery, Du Yu couldn't help thinking to himself—

What if Uncle and Aunt just wanted to pick an easy-to-remember divorce date?

Li Mengnan scrolled her screen with her thumb, amazed. "All-Attribute Demon Tamer, this Teacher Qingqing is awesome."

Du Yu leaned in for a look at the phone. "Signature Demon Pet—the Rose Spirit. That means she specializes in Wood and Fire Dual Element! She has Fire, that's kind of perfect for me?"

"Better check out the other teachers, just in case there's someone even stronger." Li Mengnan kept searching names.

Too bad, even the most reputable school website didn't clearly list each teacher's Power Level.

"Bang! Bang! Bang!" Suddenly, someone knocked on the pipes outside the door.

Right after, Old Demon Gong's bass voice echoed through the empty dorm building. "The school bus is about to leave! If you need to go, then hurry up—don't make me late for training the next batch of students!"

Hearing that, Du Yu quickly got his backpack together and ran out with Li Mengnan.

Sure enough, as soon as he stepped out of the dorm building and glanced through the school's old iron gate, he saw there was another school bus by the road.

As Du Yu walked, he counted the people getting off—not one more, not one less, exactly twenty-four.

The boys and girls all stared at the rundown campus, faces full of either confusion or gloom. They looked just like Du Yu and the others when they'd first arrived.

But there was one good-looking guy, with a face full of anticipation, who immediately came up to Du Yu to get the scoop. "Hey, did you just finish training?"

Du Yu: "Yeah."

"How was it?" The guy asked excitedly, "Are the teachers good? Are they strong? What element? What Demon Pet do they raise?"

Du Yu: "The teacher... uh, Fire Attribute, staff skills are super strong!

Really nice person, very kind. Tall and muscular, majorly charismatic, and his voice is really magnetic.

His teaching style is totally unique—guaranteed to crank out top students."

"That sounds amazing? Awesome! No wonder they're the Demon Spirit Academy's special instructor!" The boy nodded over and over in excitement, thanking him. "Thank you! My name's An Ran. What's yours?"

"Hey~" Du Yu waved grandly and headed straight for the bus, leaving the boy with just his back. "No need for names if we're fated to meet. It's a long road out there—see you again, if it's meant to be!"
