The adventurers rushed forward, escaping the incoming wolfurn pack.
Max could already feel the dense energy signals heading their way. The pack was really serious about killing them.
They weren't going to waste more time.
Reith turned his head back and realized they had left the fighting area a long time ago.
Raising his gaze, he noticed he was still being held by the short girl. Her dark hair flowed in the warm wind.
Who was she?
The men arrived at a spot.
"Thank you, Minx," Max spoke to a short, elderly man, but Minx only nodded.
"Next time, try to work faster. I thought you were already at the agreed spot," Minx grumbled. Max could only chuckle.
The sun was going down, so Max looked back at the rest of the people. It was worthwhile to note that they hadn't lost anybody, even though there were some bad injuries.
"How's he coming along?" Max moved to a healer who was crouched beside a man. There was a large wound in the man's torso.
The healer was trying her best to mend it together, but the flesh would move forward and then fall back at every turn.
"I'm so sorry. I'm trying my best," tears filled the girl's eyes as she spoke, raising her head to face Max.
Max sighed. These people were so inefficient. He didn't even want to use them, but this time he had no choice.
He smiled at her. "Don't worry about it. I know you are trying your best. One of my men will handle it for you."
Looking at him with admiration, the girl bowed. "Thank you so much, Sir. I'll practice my technique even harder," she said.
Max patted her head and instantly made a call to Tia. Even if it was inevitable to lose men on a mission, he didn't want one lost under his watch.
"Tia, please do something for him. Thank you."
Tia slightly frowned, but nevertheless, she got to work.
Channeling her Hana energy, she raised her hand over the man.
Knowing Tia could handle the rest, Max continued his inspection and then came across Reith.
"What were you doing earlier?" Max crouched to his level and stared straight at him.
Reith turned his gaze away, not wanting to say anything. But when it looked like Max was going nowhere, he was forced to speak.
"I didn't want to make a mistake," he softly said. "I could have killed someone without knowing."
Hearing his reason, Max scoffed. "More people would have died if you didn't do anything. If you knew you had all that lightning in you, why didn't you release it sooner?" he said with a clenched fist.
"Yeah, I know. Sorry about that," Reith said in a low voice. He didn't want to have this conversation. They wouldn't know what it felt like to carry such a burden on your chest.
Max looked at him for a while.
"Kid, what's your name?" he asked.
Narrowing his gaze, Reith raised his head to look at him. Was this guy trying to charm him again?
"Reith Sorakaze," he said, then turned his face away. He wasn't going to look this Max person in the eyes. If he did, he could easily be charmed.
Max frowned. Why did that name sound so familiar?
"Listen, Reith. If you are afraid of the weapon you were given, when would you ever use it?" Max said.
"We were each given a cross to carry, to use it in a different way. Forget about how you use it, and just use it," Max tried to advise him.
Reith wasn't comfortable hearing that. "What if it killed someone? Or harmed someone else's life?" he asked.
Max was speechless. If he were talking to a version of himself, he would have gone straight away and said that people's lives didn't matter as long as you got what you wanted.
At least, that was what he had learned. It didn't matter if people went down the dark path because of what you did. All that mattered was your gain.
But Reith wasn't him, and he felt that if he told this kid the wrong thing, he might not live very long.
"Reith, if you are that afraid, why don't you learn to control it?" Max answered. Yes, that was the best way to respond. When he reached Cassia's tent, he would tell her about this remarkable action.
"That's why I came on this trip," Reith sighed. There was no point in this conversation. He rose to his feet. "I'm sorry for the trouble I caused the group. I'll find a way to control my technique."
Max merely watched. The lightning scene replayed in front of him once again, as if he had not gone over it a hundred times already.
"What grade talent are you, Reith?" Max asked with a neutral look.
Reith paused for a while. "SSS grade talent," he said, then walked away.
Max's feet were planted firmly on the ground, and he held his breath. It was this kid. He had heard there was an SSS grade talent in this region, but it seemed unbelievable. This region wasn't developed enough with Hana to produce such a prodigy.
"Only regions like Yvergern or Star Region should be able to bring forth miracles, but even those regions have been silent."
He remembered how he had argued with his team that it wasn't possible. His mind went back to when the eye-patched man had asked the question. He had thought it was merely a guess.
But now it was true. He had to tell Cassia. So many good news in one day.
Max looked around. "Everyone, we are building camp here for the night. Please get your tents ready and stay alert," he yelled.
Looking at him, everyone nodded.
Max continued his patrol. When he was done, he walked back the way he had come. He turned and noticed Tia placing a cloth over a body.
She looked at him and shook her head.
Max sighed. He had to report this death to the Alliance.
