Yin Hu laid his head back onto the lounging chair. Resigning himself to his fate. There would be no rest for him. Not any time soon. Not today, not tomorrow and not until he established himself his clan or the foundation of a business empire.
One or the other would be his solution to this consistent problem. For now, he was forced to deal with it as a normal person. Be an adult.
He took off his wide brimmed hat with the aggressive knocking as background music. Giving him a more intense scene. By the time he had done so, the girls had already grabbed their weapons. Both had started wrapping them up. Tight bundles to hide what they looked like from their enemies and tied with a long string denoting their personalities.
Pink and silver for Shui. Emerald green for Jun's sharp blade. He wasn't sure why they did that exactly, but it didn't seem like an issue at all. Rather a cute little bonding thing. Of which he should encourage more and more in his general direction for better master to disciple relationships. Every little bit counted after all.
Both girls were next to him in moments. It only took a few seconds.
Yin Hu noticed the tension in their limbs. The way Shui seemed to cower into herself rather than her extreme innocent confidence. Jun's jaw creaking and tight. Her body completely tense and ready for a war. Each one acting strange.
The stone walls of the courtyard stood taller than even himself. And he stood at a prodigious height above most people around him by a margin. That only made the size of the group of peoples at the doorway even more obvious to him as soon as he caught it.
He could see the top of a head peeking over the walls. A single large figure. They had well oiled black and pepper hair. Maybe even over-oiled. It reflected sun rays back towards them.
It wasn't much, but he could make a guess at what type of person was at his doorway. He stood up. Contemplating whether he should pull out his spear immediately in case whoever appeared had ill intentions.
But then they might not. Starting their conversation and whatever reason they would be here off on a bad start. He could also pull it out quicker than he could be attacked. If someone was faster than that, then he was screwed either way so it was a moot point.
"Jun," Yin Hu sat back down. "Let our obnoxious visitors in."
The older girl nodded, doing what she was told. Though her steps were slow and stiff as he expected from a nervous or anxious Jun.
He laid back onto his lounging chair. Pulling deeply from the vast well that was his persona. Endless years of acting by himself. Months with the girls and the constant reaffirming that it was his most powerful ability.
It would not fail him now.
Probably a good idea to figure out a backup plan for it. Just in case someone is strangely immune.
She cracked the door open and stepped out of the way. Quickly returning to his side. Shui had transitioned over to stand behind his chair. Almost hiding her small frame. Only peeking out. They waited as the figure shifted back and forth.
Yin Hu could hear multiple voices. More than a few if he had to hazard a guess on their numbers. He prepared to tell the girls to run so he didn't need to worry about them if a fight broke out. Yin Hu was unsure if he could fight so many individuals that may or may not be cultivators while protecting them too. It was not something he wanted to attempt.
Stolen from its original source, this story is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.
Two scrawny fellows filtered into the courtyard. Both held their sheathed weapons, threatening to pull them out if they saw anything untoward.
A moment later the large figure shifted. Forced to contort to fit their massive frame through the doorway in order to get in. Wide shoulders and powerful build. Heavy robes covered in clinking jewelry, thick metal plates and more made a cacophony as they ducked and straightened out to full height. Directly in front of the gateway.
Yin Hu felt his breath hitch.
This is him. The Gang Boss. It has to be, same exact feeling and look.
He still remembered him from the day he entered into the town. Which, all things considered, was not that long ago. Just a few months at most. But the image was stuck in his head since then. The only real cultivator in this pretty dark world he had fallen into. Pyramids of heads included.
There had yet to be another cultivator at his level that Yin Hu encountered. YagWan might have been the closest, but he wasn't sure where the master sly fox stood in the whole cultivation levels thing. Their encounter had been short.
It made Yin Hu lean into his persona more.
The Gang Boss rubbed a hand through his salt and pepper beard. Sharp eyes surveying them. Roving across the entire courtyard and giving everything its due attention for a second or two. From the two trees to the weeds on the ground.
Pausing on the weapons in Shui's and Jun's hands and finally falling onto Yin Hu.
Yin Hu immediately cursed to himself mentally. A cultivation brute was easy to deal with, even a sly fox and bullshitter was much easier to deal with than someone who waited and watched. Pausing to think and considering everything that was occurring around them. Planning and plotting.
It was a lot harder to sell his pseudo persona to people like that.
He would need to readjust his persona slightly to accommodate this situation. He would weaponize his silence. Make it impossible to figure out what he was thinking exactly or what his words truly meant behind it all. Then add onto it the unshakable confidence of someone who knows something you don't.
Ancient existences understood things others couldn't possibly figure out after all. It came with the job description. Or if he was strong enough to wipe an entire city off the face of the planet. How would he act? What type of self esteem would he carry?
Fuck! There's supposed to be progression! I thought we established this rule! Where are the weak cultivators and his mobs? Why did he show up first!?
"Greetings. I am Dong ZhenKang. A humble cultivator and leader of this dirty hovel." Dong ZhenKang bowed.
He had the slickest smile Yin Hu had ever seen on his face. The one that made you one hundred percent positive that you were about to get scammed for something and like it too. Everything about this Dong ZhenKang irked him wrong.
And now I learn he is a hustler?
Yin Hu would rather face an overwhelming hidden monster than one like this.
He decided to not return the greeting. They were insects compared to an ancient being of his caliber. None of them worthy of interacting with him and not for the next thousand years either. Not until they transcended this realm or some other bullshit he needed.
Jun took it as the cue for her to speak up for him. She looked uncomfortable. "Y-You grace us with your visit. But we have no clear idea as to the reason why you would join us without warning."
Yin Hu leaned back into his lounging chair. Getting comfortable. Letting his lounging chair ease him back while keeping an inscrutable expression.
Insects, James. They're all insects unworthy of your presence.
Those were his mantra for the foreseeable future. Constantly repeating it to himself and make it his very aura. None of them were worthy. None of them should feel worthy enough to be before him. It was already enough to simply exist in his presence.
"Jun," Dong ZhenKang said, his eyes never leaving Yin Hu. "Why have you not spoken to me about your ancestor's arrival? I would have had a parade to throw flowers and cheer for him. Cover him in adulation. Our humble town might not be much, but the people are filled with passion."
She gulped. Unsure how to respond. Eventually looking back at him for guidance.
Yin Hu gave her a reassuring nod. Then looked away to continue channeling his aloofness. Studying the clouds above them. One strangely shaped like a cluster of multiple dragons that were intertwined together. A strange, detailed cloud.
