"I usually control my dreams, but sometimes, I don't. I think it's better to let them tell me what they want to say sometimes." ~Shallies Mythernal
"Big Sis? Bernadette? Are you there, Big Sis?"
"Hmm? Yeah. I'm here."
"Is it night already?"
"That's right. You should go to sleep."
"You used to bring me outside at night. We used to look at the moon together and wait for the sun to rise. I wish Mom and Dad were here."
"We can't do that anymore. The gods thickened the clouds, even the sun can't penetrate them now."
"It's just one god, right? They said she turned mad. They said she wanted Ysvil's soul. They… They're saying you want to take Ysvil's soul. Bernadette, my dear Big Sister, they're lying, right?"
"Of course, they are. If you want, I can bring back your eyesight so you can see that I'm not mad. There's nothing wrong with me. It's those other gods who are jealous. Everyone's worshiping me. I have all their love. They're mine, and mine alone. And they don't want that."
"Oh… Then it's fine, Big Sis. I don't mind not getting my eyesight back. I offered it to you. If you're not mad, then I'll be fine."
"…"
"…"
"Bernadette? Are you still there?"
"Yes, I'm here. I'll always be here."
"It's been a few weeks, are they still fighting each other?"
"Sadly, yes."
"Can you help me with something? I want to talk to the angels and devils again. Maybe we can come to an agreement. After that, we can sort out the issue with the clouds."
"I can talk to them for you if you want. They're a bit stubborn, stuck with their own wars, but they should still be reasonable people. If only they would side with me. They should know that I'm the only one who can help them."
"It's okay, Big Sis. I can talk to them. Words are powerful instruments. I'm sure I can convince them to make a truce."
"Well… If you say so."
"…"
"…"
"Big Sis? You haven't left yet, have you?"
"I'll never leave your side. Don't worry."
"I'm still scared. The people kept chanting 'Mad Goddess Bernadette' the other day. Then suddenly, it went quiet. I don't know what to think. Can you please be honest with me? Did you kill them?"
"I…"
"Big Sis?"
"No, I didn't kill them. You looked like you were in pain, so I teleported us away. If they won't worship me anymore, then I don't need them either. It's fine."
"Bernadette, you're being honest with me, right?"
"Of course, I am. I'll never lie to you."
"Okay. Thank you."
"…"
"…"
"Big Sis, if you're still there, I know now that you lied to me. I know now that it was you who covered the world in darkness. I know that you started the war between the angels and devils. I know that you killed anyone who refuses to worship you.
"Bernadette. I understand now that you've become mad. I've always known. I just wish I had admitted it sooner. I refused to see the signs, so I'm taking my eyes back, and I'm setting right all of your wrongs. I'm sorry it had to be this way, Big Sis. But I want you to know that I'll love you always."
"…"
"You can…"
"…"
"You can rest easy now, Big Sis. I'll never forget you."
"I know you won't. Thank you for freeing me. Don't let them know. I don't want them to know. It's only been just you. I'm just a random mad goddess. The first of many you'll have to kill. Ysvil loves you more than me, so I'm sure she'll help you rewrite history.
"Reunite with our other relatives. Change what they know. Hide me from them. Then make new friends. You don't have to tell them about me. I'm sorry. I love you."
"I love you too, Big Sis."
"Goodbye, Shallies. Take care of yourself."
"…"
"…"
"Goodbye, Bernadette."
Shallies woke up in her tent. She just opened her eyes, refusing to move. Her tears were there, so she wiped them away.
Unlawfully taken from Royal Road, this story should be reported if seen on Amazon.
She could still see her big sister lying lifeless in her arms, with her own sword stuck through the mad goddess's chest. They had looked exactly like each other.
Bernadette Mythernal had been just a few minutes older than Shallies Mythernal. And throughout their entire mortal life, they had been inseparable. Even in ascension, they had been the first of their kind.
Twin Goddesses.
But such a thing didn't exist. Not anymore.
A void in history.
No…
A change.
Shallies hid the fact she had a twin sister. It was a last request after all. She sighed, struggling to make sense of this vision. It had nothing to do with Fello'resh after all. But…
Unable to sleep anymore, the Godkiller sighed and went out of the tent. It was still dark outside, but she could feel someone nearby actively using mana. Curious, she headed towards the beach where Tayin was.
In times like these, she would rather just help someone else, instead of wallowing in her own sorrow.
"Couldn't sleep?" she asked the Chronospark, who was practicing her Time Stop. The Godkiller sat on a flat rock, waiting for Tayin to respond.
"Yeah," the halfling said, relaxing her breathing while she rested her wand. An ocean wave that was affected by the Spell came crashing down, causing an irregular ripple that eventually disappeared with the rest of the waters. "I'm starting to think I should've taken Elemental Mage instead of Chronospark. My Time Stop feels so useless."
"It's really an unfair Class," Shallies commented. "Your controlling Spells don't work on Boss monsters, and your Class Ascension routes eventually take away your flexibility. By the time you're either a Chronoadept or a Time Breaker, you'll barely use any of your element-based Spells."
Tayin sighed. "I'm stuck with this, am I? Is there some secret way to change my Class?"
"Just because your Time Stop doesn't work on a Boss monster, it doesn't mean your Class is useless, Tayin. With your Record and Repeat, you basically have the strongest burst potential out of you three."
"That's a no, then, huh…"
Shallies just shrugged. "Yeah."
She had somewhat of an inkling of the halfling's frustrations. An inkling due to the fact that even before she became capable of acquiring every Class, Shallies had no regrets with her Class choices. Her main two, Cataclysm Archmage and Astral Lord, were still her favorite Classes even today. But she had seen many of her students regret their choices, just like what Tayin was going through now.
Many eventually got over their regret, while others stopped adventuring completely.
Shallies hoped Tayin would break through eventually.
It reminded her of her sister.
"Tayin," the Godkiller started. "What if I told you that Chronospark has a third, secret Class Ascension?"
"What?" The halfling turned, mouth agape in surprise. "Classes only branch out to two Ascensions."
"There are a few who branch into three," Shallies explained. "The gods and I suggest them to those we see with talent. But this particular one from Chronospark hasn't seen the light of day since I became Godkiller. I'm the only one who can offer it. However, one you take this Hero Class Ascension only has one Favored Class Ascension."
"What's it called?"
"The Hero Class is called the Epochkeeper Class. And the Favored Class is called Eonkeeper."
"Those… Those are pretty long lengths of time."
Shallies gestured for the Chronospark to sit beside her.
"If you choose to take Epochkeeper, you're basically guaranteed agelessness like me," Shallies started. "Of course, the same with Eonkeeper. You have to exist for multiple epochs or eons to become the authentic keeper of them, basically. Even if the last person to have those Classes didn't last that long…"
"But, I don't want to live for that long. I don't want to see my loved ones…" Tayin stared at Shallies, the gears turning in her head. She realized what she was about to say was overly insensitive. "Sorry."
"It's okay," the Godkiller said. "If you chose the Class, you can eventually give that same agelessness to Ren. Your kids are a different matter entirely, but really, I'm not expecting you to take it, anyway.
"All I really want is for you to understand how powerful your Class is, potential-wise. That it's so fundamentally stable and strong that a third Class could be brought out of it. Chronoadept and Time Breaker have the same potential. You just have to keep forging on."
"Thanks." Tayin smiled slightly. "I guess I just wanted some confirmation that the Class will eventually turn into something I can depend let my life depend on."
"You do that now, you know?"
"Not with full confidence," Tayin admitted. "After my own Sight Step brought me close to death, I don't think I've tried doing it again."
"It's the same Skill that saved your life right after that, though."
"I suppose."
"Well, the only thing that can surely get your confidence back is to keep fighting. Go on quests, adventures, then improve."
"I'll do my best!" Tayin nodded, pumping herself up. She hopped back to her feet to keep training.
"You're not going to get any sleep, if you keep that up."
"We're heading home tomorrow, so I can skip some sleep. Besides, Mana Energy can keep me up."
Shallies lifted a leg and used it to prop an arm so she could support her head. "I'll just watch you then."
Tayin repeated a few Time Stops, and of course, Shallies gave her some pointers on where to improve. The halfling learned, and eventually felt the need to take a break from practicing the Spell.
"So uh…" she started, switching into practicing Shooting Star this time. "Who was the last person to have Epoch or Eonkeeper?"
Shallies smiled. "That's a secret."
"Of course."
"But whatever Class Ascension route you take, you'll eventually be able to look through time. You can find the answers for yourself."
"Will I really, though?"
Shallies smiled even wider. She appreciated her mentee's intuition. "If you know how to look for it, then you can maybe find a glimpse before I get to stop you."
"Well, that's for the future me to attempt."
The next morning, Shallies and the others returned to Rullzia Town. She made sure to return to her disguise, turning her hair brown and tying it into a ponytail. Her eyes turned red as well, portraying the features of a half-vampire, but nobody seemed to care to point it out.
"Miss Shallies and I will return once a week to monitor the dungeon and take care of the chuchilis," Valor'el said. He spoke with Hydrangea, providing some final details about their plan to farm the dungeon. "We'll bring a Farmer with us to help speed up the process. I'll sometimes bring my mentees as well."
"Please don't forget to bring some of my own people as well, so they can train," the fairy suggested.
"Of course. But it's a Joint Advanced Dungeon. We'll have to be particularly strict with where they can go, so they can level up with minimum risks."
"Thank you."
Valor'el gave a decent bow. Shallies and the others did the same.
"Farewell for now, then, Miss Hydrangea. It's a pleasure working with you. We'll return next week."
The fairy returned the gesture. "Safe travels. And please send my regards to Apple. We would like for her to visit us from time to time."
"I'll send your message."
"How do we get out?" Grace whispered as the Quest Handler and Guildmaster of Rullzia Town attended other matters.
"The same way we got in," Shallies said, gesturing over to Valor'el to set an example.
The seraph cleared his throat. "There are no Apple Trees in this cave, after all."
As soon as they got out, Shallies followed the others back to The Premonition. There was absolutely nothing worth mentioning that followed.
The path was calm, the flight was steady, and there were no surprises at all. She even allowed her students to train or relax how they wished, while she cooked lunch for them.
Just a standard journey home.
"I suppose it's better than a sky monster suddenly attacking us," she murmured to herself.
"Did you expect something like that to happen?" Valor'el asked.
"Not really," Shallie said. "I was just thinking…"
"Hmm?" the seraph asked when she trailed off.
"I was just thinking that staying in one place really isn't for me, Val. I'm going to give this tavern thing a few more tries, but I think I'm pretty sure that the next adventure will just lure me out in a heartbeat."
"You're giving it an honest try, Lady Shallies. I think you can find a way to make it work."
"We'll see," the Godkiller said, smiling. "For now, let's see what we can do with this Thrush'ven Alir."
Far in the horizon, Shallies could already see her tavern. Behind it, however, still within her lands, were buildings that weren't there before.
"They really work fast," she said, clearly impressed.
