"After some searching, we found that your sister had some… keen interest in other species."
Hibuki leaned back slightly, supporting her back on the wall behind her. She gazed up and looked at Leon's face.
Leon didn't react.
That silence made Hibuki narrow her eyes. She had expected surprise, maybe even a tiny spark of confusion. But Leon looked like someone who already knew.
'Did he really know this all along?'
Hibuki crossed her legs and continued.
"Sanguine was one of those species. An ancient bloodline from the Calamity War era. Back then, they coexisted alongside humans. But now…" She paused for a moment. "…humans have long labeled them extinct."
It was the same for elves, dwarves, and the other ancient races. Some fought on the wrong side during the war and were wiped out completely before the peace was even signed between the calamities, while others disappeared without a trace. Sanguines were among the first to vanish.
Leon listened to her, deep in thought.
'Well, they did vanish in their eyes, but they still exist.'
In the academy arc of the game, Ethan encountered an elf, but never a Sanguine. It wasn't until the very end that they made their appearance.
Sanguines were special. Unlike other species, they were prideful. Almost all of them born in that race considered themselves the purest of the pure.
A Sanguine possesses superhuman strength, an immense mana pool, and a unique ability in their bloodline. They can absorb mana and heal their wounds by sucking the blood of others, and they have to feast on blood if they want to recover from a fatal wound. Normal medication doesn't work on them.
"So, she's a half-blood?" Leon muttered.
But Hibuki heard it.
Nodding, she added, "Her mother was a pure-blood Sanguine who married a human." She watched his face closely. "And then…"
She didn't bother finishing.
Leon exhaled softly. "Myra, as their daughter, awakened some of their traits."
Hibuki nodded. "Exactly. That explains why she can go out in the sun. Because she's half-blooded, she's immune. And that's the reason why her mana control is sharper than most."
Leon leaned back, remembering that night. The blood on Myra's lips and that faint red tint in the cup from which she was drinking.
"So, that was indeed blood…"
If that's so, it means she was heavily injured before, or maybe her mana pool was completely drained, and that's why she was drinking blood.
His fingers tapped against the armrest once.
Hibuki tilted her head slightly and asked him directly, "You really don't look surprised."
Leon looked at her and gave a faint, almost unreadable smile. "Because I'm not."
Leon sighed. "So, I assume both her parents died?"
Hibuki shook her head. "We don't know yet. It could be possible, but I'm not really sure."
"That's your total report?"
Hibuki nodded, almost apologetically. "That was all."
Three weeks, and only this much.
Leon wouldn't scold her. He was also unaware of this information.
'Sister, what exactly are you up to?'
Leon also thought of the possibility of his sister showing pity on Myra and then adopting her. But there was something much bigger and more secret that she was hiding.
Leon's mind couldn't help but think.
'We lack information. It's too soon to judge her…'
Leon could be wrong too. Either way, they needed more information now, and he knew exactly how he could get it.
"Mhm." He nodded and stood up, about to leave through the door.
"Wait…" Hibuki stopped him.
He turned. "What?"
"Umm…" she said, "Do you want me to search more about your maid?"
'Hohoho… would you look at that.'
She was asking his permission. Now, Leon could ask her, but he didn't. He wanted to approach it in his own way.
So, he simply gave Hibuki another task.
"No need; instead, I have another task for you," he paused and added, glancing back at her, "House Vallahail. I want every little report of the experimentation they have performed so far."
His golden eyes gazed at her as he ordered.
Hibuki knew what experiment he was talking about, so she agreed.
"As you wish. I will contact you when I find it."
With that, Leon left the Aurora Cherry Shop.
— — —
Walking down the street of Shinra, Leon checked his pocket watch.
"Ah, shit!"
Only 30 minutes were left until curfew started. Leon needed to reach his dorm before that.
He fastened his pace.
On his way, Leon made a mental map of today's incidents.
The Twilight Order meeting, the Vallahail vanishing incident, and now Myra being a half-blooded Sanguine.
'Damn, that's too much.'
Maintaining his pace, he quietly sorted through the tasks that needed the highest priority.
It was already late, and tomorrow was the weekend. If everything went according to plan, he would try to solve at least two or three of his current problems.
First, dealing with the ice spirit ring; second, locating the Moonblade; and third, cornering Myra directly.
To do all of this, he would have to visit his sister tomorrow morning.
He planned to use the teleportation equipment inside the Blood Tower to reach the Moonblade's coordinate location. Once he got there, he would also test out his spirit ring in an open area where no one would interfere.
And during the entire journey, he would ask Myra to accompany him as his escort.
Surely, his sister wouldn't reject that request. Myra was, after all, one of her most trusted people. And will definitely allow her to accompany him.
Leon let out a tired sigh.
The streets of Shinra were still lit with the warm glow of lanterns. There were fewer people in the streets now. He barely paid attention to any of it, his mind was already spinning through scenarios and outcomes.
He thought of the ice spirit ring.
Then the Moonblade.
And finally, Myra.
'Half Sanguine,' Leon thought, his eyes narrowing slightly.
Her condition alone raised too many questions. Why was she here? Why was his sister keeping someone like her close by? And more importantly, why did she make a half-blood his maid?
There had to be something more behind it.
Leon wasn't the type to ignore loose ends.
"I'll find out tomorrow," he muttered under his breath.
He picked up his pace.
'Why do I get the feeling that my life as a CEO was less hectic…' he thought.
