Chapter 595: Eye Spy
It felt a little strange watching them all from the sidelines.
Deep down, there was a sense of longing, and Rael knew for sure it definitely didn’t belong to him, but to Aurelius.
This simp can’t calm down even after dying. It’s a little sad.
But even so, Rael didn’t concern himself with this guy’s emotions. After all, he had his own agenda he had to deal with.
And for starters, after giving Anastasia and the others one quick glance, he decided to take a stroll around the city.
He jumped on top of a rooftop and then carefully made his way from one rooftop to another, trying to find something that could indicate what the true purpose of this dream was.
But so far, there was nothing.
The fishies were normal, while some were a little anxious. The guards were on edge, and the walls were fully manned for an attack so whatever happened a bit ago wouldn’t repeat itself.
Really… he couldn’t find a thing.
What are the odds I’m just shooting a blank here? Rael thought. Maybe the system misinterpreted my intentions? What if I thought I wanted to conquer Anastasia or something, so it sent me into one of her most vulnerable memories?
It really was a possibility, which he wanted to explore.
But before he could do that, he spotted something way beyond the clouds.
At first, it just looked like a moon, however… last he checked, moons didn’t blink.
And only then did Rael realize that the eye belonged to some giant monster.
But for some reason, the longer Rael stared at the eye, the more familiar it felt.
It was a gray eye. He couldn’t see any skin surrounding it either, so he wasn’t sure where this familiarity came from.
The ground began to shake, and Rael momentarily shifted his gaze from that eye, trying to see what was going on.
To his surprise, just slightly outside of the wall were hundreds of gargoyles, if not thousands. Each time they fell to the ground, their heavy bodies caused a miniature earthquake.
Since he knew Anastasia and the others could deal with it, Rael decided to focus on the eye.
However, when he turned back toward it, he realized the eye was already gone. In its stead was a dark cloud.
The darkness spread from cloud to cloud until eventually, rain began to fall.
It was raining heavily, yet, even if this Aurelius guy didn’t have mana, Rael knew how to sense it.
And what he sensed was the fact that every raindrop contained a small trace of mana.
Whether it was harmful or not, he couldn’t tell.
Still… can’t say I like this very much. That eye up there…
Honestly, since he was already this deep into the memory, and he knew that shit was about to get real, he might as well pester Anastasia a bit more.
Therefore, he dashed from rooftop to rooftop once again and arrived in front of the restaurant.
Anastasia and her teammates were scarfing down the food. Anastasia in particular seemed happy, yet even without his body, Rael was able to see that her smile contained a great sadness.
Yet sadness turned into irritation when she spotted him approaching her.
“We need to have another talk,” Rael said.
“Ooooh!” The archer’s eyes lit up. “Is this another confession? Oh my… We’ll leave you two to it then. The drinks are on us if all goes well, yeah?”
This guy was a solid wingman, but only if Rael was trying to seduce the mother of his enemy.
Which was obviously not his intent.
The teammates soon scattered, and Rael sat down in one of their seats before taking a bite out of an unfinished piece of bread.
“It’s pretty good,” Rael remarked, and right as Anastasia was about to annihilate him, he raised his hand as a serious expression appeared on his face.
“Anastasia, what do you remember about this day? Rather, what was the most odd thing you remember?”
“What are you mumbling about?” Anastasia scoffed. “Are you trying to rub it in that my friends died?”
“As much as I don’t like you, don’t flatter yourself,” Rael replied. “I’m just trying to understand something, so humor me.”
After a brief pause, Anastasia said, “Nothing was odd. The number of monsters, maybe? They kept coming and coming for nearly two weeks without stop. My friends died from injuries and exhaustion. I survived after the city fell. Happy?”
Taking her words into account, Rael rubbed his chin in thought. Then, he decided to come clean.
“Right before the gargoyles started attacking, I saw a pale white eye in the sky. It seemed like it belonged to some giant.”
“A giant?” Anastasia’s brows furrowed. “What are you talking about?”
“Know any way we could rewind a dream?” Rael asked. “If we go back a minute or two, you might be able to see it.”
Anastasia stared at him for a moment, then waved her hand. Once, twice, and after the fifth attempt, she stopped, her frown deepening.
“I can’t rewind the dream.”
Rael narrowed his eyes and tried to do it instead.
He had no clue how it worked, but since most of this mind-related stuff revolved around imagination, he tried imagining the time rewinding.
However, just like Anastasia, he came up empty.
Noticing that, Anastasia crossed her arms.
“Did you put a lock on my mind?”
“I don’t even know how to do that,” Rael replied bluntly.
“Then, if you want me to see that eye you were talking about, why not open your mind to me?” Anastasia asked, leaning in. “Or is it that you’re afraid you won’t be able to keep yourself sane?”
Rael stared at her for a moment, then sighed.
“Listen here, woman. I have nothing I want to prove to you. The only reason I’m in here right now is because I want to prove something to myself. If you’re being controlled, then that means there’s a way I can undo that control. I know you won’t cooperate, so just keep your hands to yourself and go on with your deja vu trip.”
Standing up, Rael turned his back to her.
“I’ll be watching from the side. If I find anything off again, I won’t even bother asking you since I already know how you’ll respond.”
Without saying another word, he walked off and then jumped onto a nearby rooftop.
He knew there was now going to be discord between them, but seeing that bitchy attitude of hers was just annoying.
I’ll just watch from the side… Or should I go ahead and look for that giant? Follow current novels on NoveI-Fire.ɴet
