Chapter 445: Eternal Requiem

Rael’s eyes twitched as he lay motionless. It felt like he was floating, but with every single eye twitch, he felt his consciousness drifting back to reality.
When it seemed like he was about to wake up, he heard music in the distance, or rather, someone playing the piano.
It was a heavy, low-tempo song that emphasized grief, and for some reason, Rael felt as if he could sympathize greatly with it.
But the moment he opened his eyes, the music ended, causing a soft breeze to brush past him as he took in his surroundings.
He was no longer in the Mind Realm, and frankly, he couldn’t tell where he was at all.
It was a dark dimension with a purple, starry sky overhead, and a few meters away, there was a completely white piano, a stark contrast to the desolate surroundings.
There was no shallow water that typically represented the Mind and Dream Realm. Instead, a purple grass field stretched on as far as the eye could see.
Rael kept looking around in amazement. Eventually, he lifted his body off the bed and placed his feet on the purple grass field before slowly making his way over to the piano.
It felt as if his feet were being massaged with each step he took, and when he finally arrived, he sat down in front of the piano.
The piano lid was already lifted, so with a completely blank gaze, Rael extended his hand, reaching for one of the piano keys.
But as his finger was about to touch a key, he halted, feeling as if a wave of clarity had hit him, making him snap out of his momentary stupor.
“…”
Has a year already gone by? Did something go wrong? Rael thought, glancing around again. No… That seems unlikely.
He closed his eyes and began recalling what happened moments before he activated his skill.
And it didn’t take long for him to piece together the full picture.
<…>
<[Yes] has been selected…>
Hmm… Rael rubbed his chin, then sighed. Yeah, that seems like something I’d do. But what’s the occasion? Just because I decided to sleep inside the Mind Realm? That seems a little excessive.
After all, while he didn’t know who the Sin of Sloth was, they did sound just a teeny tiny bit important.
Therefore, Rael didn’t dare to treat this situation lightly.
However, when he glanced back down at the piano keys, the same enchanting feeling enveloped him like earlier.
It was almost as if he were to press one key, then he wouldn’t be able to stop, so with all of his mental strength, Rael resisted it and stood up.
Yet he was immediately met with a surprising sight as the ground that had previously been nothing but purple grass had now turned blue.
It was a barely noticeable change, as the shades were similar, but Rael’s perception was way too enhanced to not notice it.
He turned his back to the piano, prepared to walk away. That was when a single key was pressed, then another, causing that same eerily sad melody to resound through the strange Eternal Requiem domain.
Rael felt an instinctive fear, as if it were telling him not to turn around, but since he was not in the business of being a coward, he soon turned toward the figure playing the piano.
To his surprise, it was a beautiful, purple-haired woman with a pure white dress, playing the piano. Her blue eyes shone like sapphires, and after finally finishing the song, she turned toward him and flashed a subtle smile.
“How was it?” she asked, pointing at his cheek.
He was confused at first, but he soon realized a single tear had fallen, which he swiftly wiped away.
The woman smiled. “I played a tune that reminds you of your loved ones, whether past or present… I tried plenty of other melodies, but the one portraying grief was the only one you reacted to.”
Hearing that, a sour look appeared on Rael’s face.
“I see…” he mumbled, meeting her blue eyes. “Are you the Sin of Sloth?”
“I’m pretty sure you have your own secretive ways of figuring that out,” the woman replied cryptically.
Yet Rael knew exactly what she was talking about, and because of that, he was even more wary of what else the woman knew.
Despite that, he took her advice and inspected her, only to be left shocked.
—Nyx, The Goddess of Eternal Slumber [Grade 10 Calamity Class | Level 109,929] – Vitality: Tier 64 [100% / 100% HP]
<Ding!>
“So it’s like that…” Nyx muttered, nodding several times. “You have a perception-based ability that bypasses basic mental barriers. Was it given to you by a Supreme God? No… since it brute-forces the defenses, it’s probably a Primordial God specializing in mental barriers and arrays, huh? How neat.”
With those words, she scooted aside, then tapped on the open space on the piano bench.
“Don’t be shy, sit down. I don’t usually bite,” Nyx said mischievously.
Rael stared at her for a few moments, unsure of how to react.
She a Grade 10 Calamity Class… Level 109,929 too… Isn’t she on the same level as Solenne? Solenne’s a Grade 9 Apocalypse Class so they might be very similar.
Despite that, she was likely the strongest person he had ever seen, and if she just casually popped up like this, he could assume there were plenty more powerhouses like her.
Even so, since an opportunity had presented itself in the form of Nyx, Rael was surely going to take it.
So with that in mind, he took a deep breath and sat down on the piano bench beside her.
