Chapter 509 - 4: The Lost Girl

Chapter 509: Chapter 4: The Lost Girl

Gray Stone Town, a small border town in the northwest of the Kingdom of Ramding.

Located in the remote mountainous region of northwest Ramding, the nearest town with commercial activity is nearly a month’s journey away. The town itself doesn’t have any specialties, and the townspeople are self-sufficient by growing some food and gathering some nuts.

Under these circumstances, the town is basically isolated from the world, except for the occasional Wandering Merchant who comes to sell goods, and the Lord’s convoy which comes every six months to collect some taxes. Other than that, there is virtually no contact with the outside world.

It was early morning, just at dawn.

“Yawn!~”

A little old man yawned as he pushed open the door, picked up the hoe leaning against the door, and headed to the fields. Behind him, a plainly dressed old woman followed, carrying a bamboo basket in her hand and trailing behind the man.

This was the Farrias couple, an ordinary couple in the ordinary small town of Gray Stone Town.

Like most couples in Gray Stone Town, they lived a life of farming and nut gathering, born and raised in Gray Stone Town, nurturing their children here, growing old here, never leaving Gray Stone Town in their lifetime.

Today was an ordinary day, and the two went out as usual. Next, the husband Farrias would go to the field to cultivate, while his wife Bonne would go to the nearby forest to gather nuts. They greeted each other before the forest and then parted ways.

However, just as Farrias was carrying the hoe and planning to head to the fields, a scream suddenly erupted from inside the forest:

“Ah!”

Soon after, he saw Bonne, who had just walked into the forest, running out in a panic, shouting loudly to Farrias, “Old man, quick, quick come over, there’s someone here!”

Farrias was stunned, seemingly not understanding: “What?”

Bonne cursed, “Don’t ’what’ me, I told you to come over quickly, old deaf!”

Farrias understood this time and immediately dropped the hoe and followed Bonne inside.

After walking a few steps into the forest, they saw a figure under an old oak tree ahead.

It was a young girl, appearing to be about 20 years old, wearing only a single thin garment, leaning against the tree trunk with her eyes closed, not knowing if she was asleep or unconscious.

Farrias frowned, “A stranger?”

Gray Stone Town is so small that everyone in town knows each other, and this young girl was clearly a stranger they had never seen before.

Farrias was puzzled.

Gray Stone Town is an extremely remote and isolated town, and it is impossible for travelers to visit other than occasional Wandering Merchants and the Tax Officer, especially such a lone young woman.

Who is this girl? Where did she come from?

Before Farrias could figure it out, Bonne had already walked forward.

Farrias shivered all over, hurriedly shouted, “Wife, what are you doing! Come back quickly!”

He suddenly remembered those terrifying tales of Witches pretending to be innocent, lost, and fainted girls in the forest to lure kind people and harm them when they got close.

This scene was identical to those terrifying legends.

He wanted to call his wife back, but Bonne ignored him and walked quickly to the girl, kindly calling, “Girl! Girl!”

Under Bonne’s calls, the woman sleeping under the tree finally woke up, opened her eyes, and looked at Bonne with confusion.

Bonne couldn’t help but ask, “Who are you? How come you’re here? Are you lost?”

The girl looked at her, and when their eyes met, Bonne couldn’t help but pause, because the girl’s eyes, how to say… were empty, like a soulless shell.

At this moment, Farrias also ran over, holding his wife while cautiously asking the girl, “Stranger, who are you? How come you’re here?”

The girl finally spoke, but her answer was, “I don’t know.”

Farrias and Bonne looked at each other in dismay.

Farrias tugged at Bonne, whispering, “This girl seems not quite right, let’s leave quickly.”

Bonne wanted to say something more, but Farrias already pulled her away.

Bonne had no choice but to give up, managing to take one last distant look at the girl, seeing her looking lost under the tree.

Turning soil, weeding, insect removal… the labor progressed in an orderly manner.

Soon, a day passed.

The Farrias couple returned home with their farming tools as usual, had dinner, and then went to sleep.

However, that night, Bonne couldn’t fall asleep for a long time.

She didn’t know why that scene in the morning kept coming back to her, thinking of the girl in the woods and that lost look in her eyes.

Could she… still be there?

For some reason, such a thought popped up in Bonne’s mind.

The more she thought about it, the more she couldn’t sleep.

Finally,

she got up, dressing herself.

The sleepy Farrias beside her turned his head, groggily asked, “Yawn, what are you doing? In the middle of the night.”

Bonne said, “I’m going to see.”

Farrias opened his sleepy eyes a little more, “See what…”

Bonne said, “The girl?”

Farrias questioned, “Girl? What girl?”

Bonne said, “The one in the woods.”

Without waiting for Farrias to react, she got up, put on her Cloak, took the lantern hanging on the wall, and pushed the door open, leaving.

Heading down the path to the woods.

Tonight was exceptionally cold, with frost forming on the road. Despite wearing the Cloak, Bonne still couldn’t help but tighten her body against the cold wind.

“What am I thinking? How could someone be so silly? How could anyone still be there on such a cold night?”

Bonne found it amusing.

She instinctively wanted to turn back, but since she had walked halfway, she thought for a moment and continued forward. Follow current ɴᴏᴠᴇʟs on N0velFire.ɴet

Just think of it as taking a walk because I can’t sleep.

Convincing herself, Bonne soon walked through the path outside her door and entered the woods.

As soon as she entered, she was stunned.

Under the same big tree from before, the girl was still there, except she had changed from sitting to standing.

She was still wearing that thin garment, and the cold nighttime air had frosted her skin.

“God!”

Bonne hurriedly ran over, taking off her Cloak to cover the girl. “Why are you still here!”

The girl turned to look at her, her eyes still as confused as before, replying in bewilderment, “I… I don’t know where to go.”

There’s no point discussing it now, let’s go back to the house first.

So Bonne led her back, “Come with me first, we can talk at home.”

“By the way, what’s your name?”

The girl simply stated a name, “Messiah.”
