Diary of a Dead Wizard

Chapter 596: The Old Witch's Hatred

At first, Brando didn’t quite believe Saul’s words, but Saul analyzed the various suspicious actions during Wind Sprite’s invasion today, gradually eroding Brando’s distrust.

Even so, he still thought Saul was somewhat mad to dare invade a third-rank wizard’s lair based on his own speculation.

He now only worried that if Saul couldn’t return alive, he would have offended Wind Sprite for nothing.

Brando left somewhat worried.

The excited Saul immediately changed to a calm expression after he left.

The Old Witch waited on the first floor of the wizard tower, leaning against the wall. “Deceiving people again?”

Saul didn’t deny it. “Yes, no matter what, she’s still a former third-rank. The forces on my side are still somewhat thin. If I can deceive one second-rank, that’s one more.”

He even gave the Old Witch orders. “When the time comes, Brando will at most assist from the side—getting him to really fight desperately is impossible. Only you can directly confront Wind Sprite.”

The Old Witch wasn’t surprised. From the moment Saul decided to strike back at Wind Sprite, she knew she couldn’t escape and would have to work for Saul.

But she still pretended to be dissatisfied. “Hmph, why should I risk my life for you?”

Saul spread his hands. “What are you talking about? The only person here who has a life-and-death feud with Wind Sprite… is you!”

“If I were an ordinary first-rank wizard facing Wind Sprite’s robbery and swallowed my anger, this matter might very well just pass.”

“But you’re different. You’re someone wanted throughout Wind Sprite’s and Firefly Lord’s territories. Now Wind Sprite’s strength is damaged, and she’s sent most of her subordinates out searching for some Storm Eye. So this counterattack of mine might be your only chance to kill Wind Sprite in return.”

Saul walked in front of the Old Witch, looking down at her face with proportions so exaggerated they were terrifying. “Are you willing to give up this chance to kill your enemy?”

The Old Witch was stunned for a moment, then suddenly burst into loud laughter.

“Hahahaha, hahahaha, ahahaha!!!”

She raised both hands to her cheeks, her fingers twisted, sharp nails leaving bloody scratches on her skin.

“Unwilling, of course unwilling! I want to kill her, I must kill her!”

Saul stepped back watching the suddenly maddened Old Witch.

He was actually somewhat curious about what deep hatred existed between the Old Witch and Wind Sprite.

Initially, he thought the Old Witch decided to rebel because she was being hunted by Wind Sprite, but seeing her still not caring about offending Wind Sprite after changing her appearance made Saul guess there should be other grievances between them.

But the Old Witch, who had always been secretive about her origins and background, might not be willing to tell him.

For example, even today Saul didn’t know the Old Witch’s name.

The Old Witch finally stopped laughing.

At this time, her face had completely recovered, showing no sign of the bloody scratches she had clawed into it.

“I’ll deal with Wind Sprite, Brando will help you attract other enemies’ attention—what will you do?”

Saul’s eyes curved into crescents as he tilted his head. “Me? I’m going to Wind Sprite’s completed magic reservoir to use the magic reservoir she helped me build to complete my advancement.”

“Advancing to second rank.”

The Old Witch pointed at Saul from afar. “You little schemer, did you already guess Wind Sprite would come steal the magic reservoir, which is why you built it on the tower top? Now you’re even having Brando and me clear obstacles for your advancement?”

“Building it on the tower top was just due to construction requirements. I can’t calculate that far ahead.” Saul wasn’t embarrassed and explained, “Only by advancing to second rank myself can I conveniently fight alongside you all.”

“Second rank isn’t so easy to advance to. Are you confident you’ve grasped your locator’s characteristics?”

The smile on Saul’s face gradually disappeared. “I think I’ve grasped it… though this isn’t good news.”

The Old Witch continued questioning, but Saul didn’t discuss the locator matter further, instead bringing up something else.

“It’s been so long now. I think your perfect body has taken shape. Let me help you remove the last trace of pollution from your body.”

The Old Witch had finally waited for the pollution eradication she had anticipated day and night, yet she still couldn’t help but roll her eyes first.

“You little schemer.”

With personnel and plans all prepared, Saul brought all his consciousness bodies and headed to Wind Sprite’s cliff together with the Old Witch and Brando.

The Old Witch, whose internal black tide had been completely absorbed by Saul and who was now glowing with health, also brought her strongest magical tool—the Baisec Magic Mirror.

Brando, who had hurriedly come from his base, prepared three puppet bodies for rotation.

The Old Witch hadn’t expected to leave so urgently. She had thought Saul would at least wait for Wind Sprite to complete the magic reservoir’s preparations before going to pick the peaches.

But Saul believed that Wind Sprite’s sudden action to steal the magic reservoir, coming and going hastily, must have been because she had completed other preparations before coming to steal things.

After Wind Sprite brought the magic reservoir back, she would at most need debugging plus one preventive experiment before preparing to officially start the magic reservoir.

Therefore, Saul only gave Wind Sprite three days to perfect her experiments.

Though Rhine Lake had once been classified under Dreammaker Clark’s control range, it wasn’t too far from Wind Sprite’s lair either.

Otherwise, Wind Sprite wouldn’t have sent people to probe several times.

Saul’s group traveled day and night, reaching Wind Sprite’s lair within five days.

Presumably at this time, Wind Sprite carrying the heavy magic reservoir had only just returned not long ago.

The cliff itself was located within a mountain range. It was said the other side of the range was Firefly Lord’s territory.

They hid on another mountain peak slightly shorter than the cliff, carefully using Penny and other observation methods to watch Wind Sprite’s movements.

“As you said, Wind Sprite has much fewer people here.” The Old Witch used the Baisec Magic Mirror to actually observe the scene opposite.

Saul said nothing—he was still waiting for Penny’s feedback.

The nightmare butterfly’s mission wasn’t as simple as just observing the situation outside the caves. It also had to follow the route Justin had taken when meeting Wind Sprite during his lifetime, ensuring Wind Sprite’s location hadn’t changed.

As for the magic reservoir, it was definitely placed under Wind Sprite’s nose.

With Wind Sprite’s strength damaged, she would try to hide it from everyone. The magic reservoir that supplemented pure magical power couldn’t be too far from her location, or it would escape her control.

Penny carefully flew through the cliff caves along the route Saul had taught it.

Though most here were apprentices and first-rank wizards, and there were especially few people now, Penny still needed to be cautious.

What if some wizard had the ability to see through the nightmare butterfly’s true form?

Or possessed parasitic sprites that also existed between reality and consciousness?

If that were really the case, it could only call for help from Saul for an emergency recall before other powerful wizards arrived.

However, the worst-case scenario Penny had envisioned didn’t occur.

But another unexpected event happened.

Wind Sprite actually appeared in the passage and seemed to be heading outward.

“Oh my, what’s she going out for? Time is so urgent—instead of thinking about quickly using the magic reservoir to replenish magical power, she’s actually running out to play!”

Penny grumbled indignantly in her heart, hid well, then watched Wind Sprite leave.

With Wind Sprite gone, they needed to wait for her return.

Penny recalled Saul’s instructions, carefully followed behind Wind Sprite, watched her leave the cave, then lurked at the cave entrance and transmitted the information she saw to Saul through the diary.

Without confirming Wind Sprite’s position, Saul couldn’t act rashly, so he could only wait patiently.

Fortunately, Wind Sprite returned soon after leaving this time, holding a small bag in her hand.

Penny described all this to Saul.

“Just to get a bag of something, she went personally. Seems she’s very nervous about this bag.” Saul thought for a moment and instructed Penny to continue following.

Penny quickly followed Wind Sprite inside, not daring to follow too closely for fear of being discovered.

She kept following the original markers to Wind Sprite’s room.

“Very good.” Receiving Penny’s information, Saul nodded. “The position has been confirmed.”

He turned to look at Brando. “I’ll have to trouble you with what comes next.”
