Chapter 1514: Chapter 1515: I Will Account for the People in the Yard

Chen Hai responded with a sound, exchanged a glance with Rong Yan, and followed the two of them out.

Once they left the Ye Family estate, he distinctly felt the temperature around him plummet. He wisely chose to remain silent, keeping his head down as he followed the two into the car.

He had barely pulled open the car door when, suddenly, a fierce gust of wind sliced across his cheek. His nasal bridge on the left side flared with a stabbing pain, buzzing loudly as his vision blackened, causing him to stumble and lean against the vehicle.

Something warm and liquid trickled beneath his nose. Instinctively, he wiped at it with his hand, only to lower his gaze and catch sight of the bright crimson staining his hand.

Before Chen Hai could react, a hand abruptly seized his neck, pinning him forcefully against the car, rendering him immobile.

"Ugh."

The oxygen in his lungs grew thinner and thinner. Eyes wide with panic, he desperately tried to pry the hand clutching his throat loose with both of his own.

But that hand was like an iron clamp, locking him into a suffocating grip.

His brain, deprived of oxygen, gradually turned sluggish and blank. For the first time, death seemed so terrifyingly close. His face began to swell from a blood-red hue to a bluish-purple, while his hands lost their strength with each passing second. His increasingly terrified gaze could only fix upon the man who had suddenly turned violent.

"Ugh...%...¥#@"

Rong Yan was equally shocked and instinctively reached out to pull the viciously glowering man. "Li Shengxiao, wait—don’t! He still has to help me lure that person out later."

Chen Hai’s ears buzzed with ringing, his bloodshot eyes rolling back, faint red veins bursting forth as death encroached ever closer. Completely overcome by terror, his mind remained a blank void. His entire body started convulsing uncontrollably. Amid the haze, he vaguely saw Rong Yan’s anxious expression as she desperately reasoned with the man gripping his neck, even clinging onto the man’s arm.

Just as his consciousness grew fainter and fainter, right when he believed his brief life was drawing to an end, the overwhelming force restraining his neck suddenly slackened.

He slid down the car window onto the ground, clutching his neck and coughing violently.

"Ugh..."

Coughing, retching, his body spasming involuntarily—tears streamed uncontrollably down his face. He couldn’t even tell whether it was the intensity of the coughing fit or the sheer dread that made him lose control in the aftermath of his escape, leaving him utterly wretched and humiliated.

Before he could steady his breathing while collapsed on the ground, someone yanked him up by his collar. The tightening fabric choked his neck once more, though this time it didn’t cause suffocation. Yet the lingering terror from moments ago, when he’d been deprived of air to the brink of death, flooded his mind, rendering him incapable of rational thought. His face again twisted into a look of unrestrained panic.

Li Shengxiao’s eyes narrowed slightly, his lips pressed into a subtle line. "Now do you know what death feels like?"

Chen Hai froze for a few seconds before frantically nodding, his bluish-purple face etched with palpable fear, as though staring into the face of a demon.

A chilling smirk played across Li Shengxiao’s lips. "You were supposed to be a corpse by now. I’m merely sparing your pathetic life. Understand?"

He let go of Chen Hai.

Chen Hai stumbled a few steps before barely managing to regain his balance. Yet the horror etched on his face betrayed his shaken nerves. He nodded profusely, his complexion pale as paper, unable to bring himself to glance at the man who, back at the Ye Family estate, had seemed so mild-mannered. His voice was hoarse and frayed, like a torn bellows, unbearably grating, "Y-yes. I promised Miss Rong, as long as Qiqi recovers, I’ll go to the police station and turn myself in right away."

"Heh." Li Shengxiao let out a derisive, icy laugh. "I don’t need the police to take your life if I find it necessary."

Chen Hai fell silent for a moment, bowing his head. "I understand."

Li Shengxiao gave him a sidelong glance, his demeanor gradually reverting to its usual cold and detached state. "I’ll give you one leniency on account of Yanyan. Don’t play tricks. Otherwise, I won’t hold you accountable—I’ll hold the people in that courtyard accountable."
