Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
Though their marriage was merely for show, since Yuan Baolin had asked, Gu Changqing picked up the jade ruyi scepter from the table and lifted her red bridal veil.
What appeared before him was a face both familiar and unfamiliar.
Familiar because he knew her; unfamiliar because he had never seen her like this before.
Her delicate beauty, soft and luminous, was heightened by the resplendent bridal attire, radiant as the morning glow.
It was also the first time Yuan Baolin had seen Gu Changqing dressed in festive red. She said, smiling, “You actually look quite good in a wedding robe.”
The capital’s talk of unmatched beauty wasn’t limited to the Little Marquis. This young master of the Gu Family was no less striking.
“You too.” Gu Changqing replied politely.
Yuan Baolin chuckled, then asked, “Tonight…”
“I’ll sleep on the floor.” Gu Changqing said. Seeing her startled expression, he thought she found the idea inappropriate and quickly added, “If I don’t stay in the bridal chamber on our wedding night, people will think I disdain you.”
Yuan Baolin gave an awkward smile. “That’s not what I meant. I was asking if it’s all right for me to go to sleep first.”
Gu Changqing: “…”
“Yes.” He said after a pause.
Yuan Baolin asked again, “Will anyone come to play pranks in the bridal chamber? Should I prepare for that?”
Gu Changqing said calmly, “No.”
At present, there was no one in the entire capital bold enough to disturb his wedding night.
Xiao Heng and Shangguan Qing might have the courage, but the former wasn’t the type for such mischief, and the latter wasn’t even in the State of Zhao.
Relieved, Yuan Baolin said cheerfully, “All right then, go ahead and handle your guests. Don’t worry about me!”
“Good.” Gu Changqing turned and left the room.
Outside, he instructed his dark guards that anyone who tried to cause trouble in the bridal chamber was to be thrown out immediately.
Before long, Gu Xiaobao came running in.
Yuan Baolin looked curiously at the tiny figure who had suddenly appeared before her. She asked, “And who might you be?”
“Xiaobao.” The little boy introduced himself proudly. “Are you my sister-in-law?”
Yuan Baolin suddenly remembered that Gu Changqing indeed had a younger brother named Xiaobao.
She smiled warmly. “That’s right, I’m your sister-in-law.”
“Oh, then this is for you.” Gu Xiaobao held out a miniature food box with both hands.
The little box looked exactly like the large ones used by the adults. It had several tiers of drawers and even a handle, except this one seemed made for a child’s playhouse.
This family really was attentive to every detail, even in things made for children.
Yuan Baolin accepted it. As soon as she opened it, a mouthwatering fragrance of freshly baked pastries filled the air. Layer by layer, she unpacked it and found that every drawer contained food.
There were meat dishes, vegetables, buns, and little pastries, all in small, exquisite portions.
“Did your eldest brother ask you to bring this to me?” Yuan Baolin asked.
“Mm.” Gu Xiaobao nodded vigorously.
He had been upset that he wasn’t allowed to join the bridal procession, so to make it up to him, Gu Changqing had given him this important errand to deliver food to the bride.
However, Gu Changqing had never imagined that Xiaobao would go as far as to ask the kitchen to prepare his own exclusive dishes, presented in his own personal miniature food box.
——Truly, he was a child raised alongside Jing Kong.
Yuan Baolin found Gu Xiaobao utterly delightful and couldn’t resist reaching out to pinch his little cheek.
Gu Xiaobao: Fine. You’re my sister-in-law, and eldest brother told me to be good to you, so I’ll let you pinch me.
The two of them ended up sharing the little treats Gu Xiaobao had brought.
That night, after several rounds of heavy toasts from the guests, Gu Changqing finally returned to the bridal chamber.
Gu Xiaobao had already left, and Yuan Baolin’s servant girls were waiting outside.
When Gu Changqing stepped into the room, he found that Yuan Baolin had indeed gone to bed. The thin red silk canopy hung down, shimmering softly in the glow of the dragon-and-phoenix wedding candles, casting the entire chamber in an atmosphere of festivity.
Her slender silhouette was faintly visible through the curtain, graceful, youthful, and tinged with the subtle charm of feminine allure.
Gu Changqing quickly averted his gaze. He went to the wardrobe, pulled out a quilt, and laid it on the floor. Then, taking another blanket, he lay down fully clothed.
“Gu Changqing.”
From behind the gauze curtains, Yuan Baolin’s voice suddenly called out.
He instinctively turned his head toward her, then, remembering himself, looked away again like a proper gentleman. “You’re still awake?”
“I can’t fall asleep.” Yuan Baolin said. “I’m not used to new beds.”
Gu Changqing paused. “Then you…”
“Grannie Zhang!”
The voice of a servant girl suddenly sounded from outside the door.
“I’ve brought sobering soup for the Young Marquis!”
Grannie Zhang was Old Madame Gu’s trusted attendant. If she saw Gu Changqing sleeping on the floor, things would get very awkward.
Yuan Baolin immediately sat up, drew open the bed curtains, and whispered urgently, “Quick, get on the bed!”
If it had been anyone else, Gu Changqing could have refused to open the door. But since the person had been sent by his grandmother, he couldn’t turn her away; if he did, she might come in person.
Gu Changqing frowned slightly, swiftly rolled up his bedding, and stuffed it back into the cabinet.
Yuan Baolin jumped off the bed, raised her hands, and began untying his belt.
Gu Changqing’s eyes widened slightly. “What are you doing?”
Yuan Baolin replied matter-of-factly, “It’s our wedding night. If you’re still dressed neatly like this, won’t that look strange?”
“I can do it myself.” Gu Changqing said.
But Yuan Baolin gestured toward the window. On the paper screen, the candlelight cast their shadows clearly for anyone outside to see.
“Young Marquis.” Grannie Zhang called cheerfully from outside the door.
Gu Changqing’s hand stilled. He let go, allowing Yuan Baolin to undo his belt.
They were standing very close, so close that he could feel her breath against his skin, and the faint fragrance that belonged only to a woman.
Yuan Baolin loosened his outer robe, removed his hair crown, and finally stepped back with satisfaction. “There. Now you look a little less… immaculate.”
Gu Changqing straightened his expression and went over to open the door for Grannie Zhang. “Grannie Zhang, it’s so late. What brings you here?”
When Grannie Zhang saw his disheveled appearance, joy instantly filled her heart. The Young Marquis never touched even a single servant girl in the estate, and the Old Madame had been worrying that perhaps the Young Marquis was… lacking in that regard.
But looking at him now, all impatient and hurried like this, clearly, the Old Madame had been worrying for nothing!
She sneaked a glance inside the room. Yuan Baolin had already lain back behind the canopy curtains, with only one smooth, snow-white, delicate foot peeking out.
Oh my. Was the Young Marquis really that fierce?
Barely back in his room and already——
Grannie Zhang’s heart bloomed with delight. “The sobering soup, drink it while it’s hot!”
Gu Changqing took the bowl and drank it all in one go. Then he said to Grannie Zhang, “I’ll rest now. Please tell Grandmother not to stay up too late. I’ll go pay my respects to her in the morning.”
“Alright, alright, alright!”
Grannie Zhang carried the empty bowl away with a beaming smile.
What had the Old Madame been worrying about? Afraid the Young Marquis wasn’t capable? She had even insisted Grannie Zhang bring a certain kind of tonic soup over. But from what Grannie Zhang could see, it was probably the Young Madame who wouldn’t be able to get out of bed tomorrow morning!
Gu Changqing exhaled deeply, stepped back, closed the door, and slid the bolt in place.
Yuan Baolin quickly drew back her foot.
That foot had been meant for Grannie Zhang to see, not for Gu Changqing.
But unfortunately, Gu Changqing was a martial artist. He turned fast, and his eyesight was sharp, so he had seen it in that instant.
The nails were moist and pale, the skin gleaming like jade, small and delicate, making one want to hold it in their palm and play with it.
That was not something he should be looking at.
He quickly turned his gaze aside, steadied himself, and walked over to the cabinet. Opening it, he pulled out the bedding once again.
He lay down fully clothed, just as before.
Yet for some reason, a faint, restless heat seemed to rise from his chest.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
