For Little Jing Kong’s safety, Gu Jiao still equipped the horse king with a child’s saddle, though it was no longer the adorable tiger-head carved one from last year. This time, it was a new saddle with sharp lines and a simple design that looked cool and stylish.

Little Jing Kong sat astride the tall horse, looking every bit as proud and spirited as the steed beneath him!

Xiao Heng was on duty at the Cabinet. Before he left home in the morning, Gu Jiao had mentioned it to him, and he knew that once his duty ended, he should go to visit Grandaunt.

After all, the Cabinet was different from the Imperial Academy. He was no longer the obscure Imperial Academy’s Junior Compiler; now, as the Grand Secretary, his every move drew attention, and he could no longer act as casually as before.

So Gu Jiao didn’t go to pick him up from work; she went straight into the imperial palace.

That evening, Renshou Palace was particularly lively, with Empress Xiao, Imperial Consort Zhuang, and Du Xiaoyun all there.

Half a year ago, Du Xiaoyun had given birth to the Crown Prince’s eldest son. Empress Xiao had been overjoyed and immediately fulfilled her promise by going to the Emperor to secure for her the title of Crown Princess.

Thus, at present, Du Xiaoyun was a legitimate Crown Princess.

Du Xiaoyun was not an ambitious woman; she was straightforward, not the type to scheme or hide things, and she was very filial toward Empress Xiao, which made the Empress deeply satisfied with her.

Of course, there might also be another reason, namely, that she could bear children.

In fact, her eldest son wasn’t even a year old yet, and she was already pregnant again.

In an age when heirs were valued above all else, a filial daughter-in-law like Du Xiaoyun, who bore two children within three years, was undoubtedly a treasure of the family.

The three leading women of the imperial palace were sitting in the small garden playing leaf cards. Since they were one person short, they called for Imperial Consort Zhuang to join.

Imperial Consort Zhuang might not have inherited Grandaunt’s intellect in other matters, but when it came to playing cards, she was an expert. She managed to win several rounds in a row.

By comparison, Empress Xiao was utterly hopeless at the game. In every round, she discarded the winning card for someone else. After an hour of play, her mind was in a daze from losing so much.

She was the only one who lost, while the other three all won.

Grandaunt found it thoroughly entertaining.

“County Princess and Jing Kong have arrived!” Eunuch Qin’s cheerful voice came from the doorway.

Just then,Grandaunt happened to give Empress Xiao a good card, and Empress Xiao’s eyes instantly lit up, “Imperial mother, I’m about to win! I’m going to win! I finally——”

“JiaoJiao’s here. I’m done playing.” Empress Dowager Zhuang said seriously, pushing her cards away in an instant.

Empress Xiao: “...!!”

The twin babies were carried by Yu Ya’er and the wet nurse. The moment they got off the carriage, both little ones woke up.

It was their first time going so far from home, and both of them looked around left and right as if they could really see something.

But in truth, forty-day-old infants could only see objects within half a foot to a foot away.

Du Xiaoyun felt rather awkward seeing Gu Jiao again. She couldn’t help but think of how, in her foolish youth, she had fanatically admired Wen Linlang, only to later end up sleeping with Wen Linlang’s husband and inheriting her position.

She couldn’t help but feel she was like some green tea…

Gu Jiao, however, was calm and open-minded, never once bringing up that embarrassing past.

“Grandaunt, Aunt, Crown Princess, Imperial Consort.” Gu Jiao greeted the four women.

“Grandaunt, Aunt, Crown Princess, Imperial Consort.” Little Jing Kong echoed, mimicking her greeting perfectly.

Little Jing Kong wasn’t the main character today. At seven years old, he had already aged out of the “cute act” category. After greeting the elders, he went off to Kunning Palace to find Qin Chuyu.

The elders then began to admire and play with the twin babies.

Yes. “Admire and play with”.

The twins were simply too adorable, so fair and soft, with the sweet scent of milk, and they didn’t cry at all. Especially little Xiao Yan, who was chubby and round, bearing a strong resemblance to Aunt Xiao Yi when she was young.

Even Empress Dowager Zhuang, who rarely liked to hold babies, couldn’t resist cuddling them a few times; a true testament to just how popular the twins were.

“Bring Wuyou here.” Empress Xiao told the palace maid.

Wuyou was the Crown Prince’s eldest son, nearly eight months old now, at the perfect crawling age. He was very amusing to watch.

The palace maid carried little Qin Wuyou into Renshou Palace and placed him beside the twins.

As an eight-month-old baby, Qin Wuyou clearly looked down on the two younger ones. Unlike them, he didn’t need to be swaddled and could move his arms and legs freely.

When the palace maids brought out toys to entertain the three little ones, Qin Wuyou rudely snatched the twins’ toy away.

At that moment, Qin Wuyou’s misfortune began.

The palace maid untied the twins’ swaddling cloths to change their diapers.

During the brief moment she turned away, little Xiao Yan raised one tiny foot and gave Qin Wuyou a swift kick, knocking him over.

Xiao Cong, who was usually obedient and quiet and a little gentleman through and through, secretly followed up with another kick. His wasn’t as strong as Xiao Yan’s, but it hurt more. One could say he was truly devious to the core.

For Qin Wuyou, the precious darling of the imperial family, this was his very first time being ganged up on. The pain, the fright, and the humiliation all came at once, and he burst out crying.

“Oh dear, what happened to the young master?” The palace maid hurriedly picked up the wailing Qin Wuyou.

The two tiny culprits, however, were perfectly synchronized in both expression and movement, lying completely still on the bed, eyes fixed on the exact same spot on the ceiling.

They were utterly calm.

Hearing the commotion, Empress Xiao came over and scooped the little boy into her arms, scolding gently, “Why are you crying again? Look at your little brother and sister, how well-behaved they are!”

Qin Wuyou only cried harder.

Before long, Xiao Heng arrived from the Cabinet.

Since he was an outsider male, Imperial Consort Zhuang was about to take her leave, but Empress Dowager Zhuang waved a hand. “He’s one of our own. No need.”

Imperial Consort Zhuang’s heart warmed, her nose suddenly tingling with emotion.

After all her rebellion and defiance against her aunt, the elderly woman still regarded her as family——

When Grand Preceptor Zhuang fell from power, Ning Wang was imprisoned, and the entire Zhuang Family was exiled, she had thought she would surely die as well. But her aunt had defied the opposition and saved her life.

From now on, she swore she would never act foolishly again.

Empress Xiao sent someone to call Qin Chuyu and Little Jing Kong to come for dinner. The Crown Prince was away from the capital, so he wasn’t invited.

Originally, the Emperor hadn’t been invited either, but he came eagerly on his own.

“Imperial mother!”

“Your Little Honghong has come to see you!”

He greeted her with great enthusiasm.

Empress Dowager Zhuang rolled her eyes lifelessly.

The whole family dined together in Renshou Palace. Qin Wuyou babbled and cooed, Little Jing Kong and Qin Chuyu chased each other around the room, while Imperial Consort Zhuang, Empress Xiao, and Du Xiaoyun, the three women, gossiped merrily about everything under the sun.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
