Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

In another passage, Gu Yan was carefully searching for traces of Gu Jiao. He couldn’t find any clues, but by relying on the sense of connection between twins, he felt that she must be nearby.

“Should we call out?”

Gu Yan turned to ask Gu Chengfeng, but was startled out of his wits by a terrifying bronze fanged mask, “Ah! What are you doing!”

Gu Chengfeng, wearing the mask, grinned and said, “Got you, didn’t I?”

Still shaken, Gu Yan rubbed his pounding chest and glared angrily. “Childish! You’re not allowed to walk behind me!”

Gu Chengfeng snorted, “I don’t have any twin sense with your sister. How am I supposed to know where to go?”

Gu Yan snapped angrily, “Forward!”

Adjusting the mask on his face and patting the peacock-feathered black iron sword at his waist, Gu Chengfeng said to Gu Yan, “Give me the flame stick.”

Gu Yan handed it over coldly.

Then Gu Chengfeng strode forward proudly.

“With courage that small, you really shouldn’t have come along!”

“Funny, you and your sister came out of the same womb, but your temperaments couldn’t be more different.”

“Ah, right. She really wasn’t your… cough, cough, what I mean is, she wasn’t raised with you.”

“Hey, I’ve been talking so much, at least respond a little.”

Puzzled, Gu Chengfeng turned around, but Gu Yan was nowhere to be seen.

“Gu Yan!”

His expression changed as he retraced his steps. Just as he turned a corner, a shadow loomed up against him and struck him unconscious with a palm.

……

“Long Yi, is a gu master powerful?” In the passage, Gu Jiao resumed the earlier topic.

Long Yi thought for a moment, then answered carefully, “Not strong in fighting, but strong with gu.”

Gu masters had to raise gu worms, and generally their bodies were weak. They were skilled in using gu to enhance their strength, which made them seem like experts, but in truth it was all the work of gu.

Hearing this, Gu Jiao understood. “So if that fellow engages in close combat, he doesn’t stand much of a chance.”

Long Yi paused, then lowered his gaze and said, “But a gu master… can control people.”

Gu Jiao asked, “Was it that gu master who erased your memories?”

Long Yi replied, “Yes.”

Not only had they erased his memories, they had turned him into a killing instrument, forcing him to slay those he should never have slain and to destroy the things he was meant to protect.

“Someone’s here!” Xiao Heng shouted.

At the end of the passage, a stone door slowly opened, and a faint light spilled out from within.

Long Yi stepped forward, shielding the two behind him; his gaze was ice-cold as he approached the doorway.

When they reached the threshold, they found a spacious inner chamber where people had clearly been waiting.

Sect Leader Rong sat in a chair, idly toying with a bronze fanged mask. Standing beside him was the black-robed gu master, and held in the gu master’s grasp were the unconscious figures of Gu Yan and Gu Chengfeng.

Sect Leader Rong’s weapons had been taken from him; his wounds had been treated crudely and blood still flowed freely. He was grievously weakened, and without immediate surgery he would surely die.

Gu Jiao and Xiao Heng emerged from behind Long Yi; they glanced at the unconscious Gu Chengfeng and Gu Yan, then looked toward the gu master and Sect Leader Rong.

“What exactly do you want?” Xiao Heng demanded.

Although Sect Leader Rong’s body was frail, his presence was not diminished; he looked at Xiao Heng and said, “You are the imperial grandson of Great Yan, yes? I’ve seen your portrait. I know your and Shangguan Qing’s backgrounds, and I know that during Shi Tian’s disappearance these years, he has always been by your side. I once made a mistake, one that allowed you to profit greatly.”

Xiao Heng’s expression darkened. “Twenty-one years ago Long Yi abandoned the mission to assassinate Xuanyuan Qi, and afterwards Long Yi lost his memory. Did you do that?”

Sect Leader Rong sneered. “He betrayed me; of course he paid a price. Unfortunately, even after wiping his memories, he still ran away.”

Long Yi had surely fled Sect Leader Rong’s side out of some stubborn fixation, only to be swept by fate into the Princess Mansion.

Xiao Heng fixed his gaze on Sect Leader Rong. “Why would you do such a thing?”

Sect Leader Rong answered, “I did it for his own good. What’s wrong with being the Sect Leader’s direct disciple? Well, the past is past; let’s not harp on it.” He glanced at the two captives and smiled faintly. “These two are your friends, correct? If you want to save them, have this girl hand over the Immortality Elixir.”

Xiao Heng frowned. “Immortality Elixir?”

Sect Leader Rong’s tone hardened, “The elixir for everlasting life!”

Gu Jiao stared in disbelief. “I have an elixir for everlasting life? How would I know about that?”

Sect Leader Rong was near death. If he did not obtain the elixir soon, his life would slip away. His face darkened as he said. “I’ll say this once more: hand over the immortality elixir, or today you will all be buried with me!”

Gu Jiao replied earnestly, “I truly do not have an immortality elixir. If I did, I would have taken it myself long ago!”

Sect Leader Rong’s anger flared. “You!”

Xiao Heng quietly asked Gu Jiao, “Does he think your medicine chest contains an immortality elixir?”

Gu Jiao said, “There’s nothing like that in my medicine chest.” She turned to Sect Leader Rong and asked, “Who told you there was an elixir in my medicine chest?”

Sect Leader Rong pressed his internal force to protect his heart-circuit, but it was useless, as his life was slipping away so rapidly that he grew frantic. “I saw it with my own eyes! It must be in your medicine chest! Bring it out! Bring it out!”

This man was clearly mad.

Like those Emperors obsessed with alchemy and the myth of eternal life, he pursued a phantom. Where in the world did true immortality exist? Where was there an immortality elixir?

Losing patience, Sect Leader Rong ordered the gu master, “Kill them!”

Gu Jiao put her hand out and said, “Alright, alright. I’ll give it to you!”

Xiao Heng instantly slipped into the role, clamping her wrist and shifting to block her blinding acting with his body. “Are you crazy? You only have one dose! If you give it to him, what will happen to you?”

His performance was flawless. Had he lived in Gu Jiao’s previous life, he would surely have taken the Oscar for Best Actor.

No one doubted that he was telling the truth.

Gu Jiao forced a look of anguish and said, “But I can’t let him kill my brother and Gu Chengfeng. If I don’t have the immortality elixir, the worst is I’ll just be like you all, subject to birth, old age, sickness, and death. But what’s wrong with that?”

“JiaoJiao!” Xiao Heng said gravely.

“Enough.” Gu Jiao raised her other hand and made a stopping gesture, then drew a small porcelain vial from her bosom.

Xiao Heng snatched the vial and turned to face Sect Leader Rong. In his eyes, unwillingness, fury, helplessness, and a tangle of complicated emotions intertwined vividly and completely, “On my count, one, two, three, you push the people to me, and I’ll toss the medicine to you.”

Greed flickered in Sect Leader Rong’s eyes. “Agreed.”

“One, two, three!”

No sooner had Xiao Heng finished speaking than the gu master shoved the two captives forward, and Xiao Heng flung the elixir through the air.

Long Yi leapt into the air and caught Gu Chengfeng, while Gu Jiao rushed forward several steps and caught Gu Yan in her arms.

At that very instant, Gu Yan, who had seemed unconscious, suddenly opened his eyes. His hand shot behind his back to draw the Peacock feather longsword. His cold gaze flashed as he thrust the blade straight into someone’s chest!

The gu master lowered his head to stare at the Black Moon sword that had pierced through his chest, turned his head in disbelief, and rasped, “You…”

Gu Yan wiped the splattered blood from his face, his eyes utterly clear. “You want me to harm my sister? Dream on!”

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
