Gu Changqing carried Gu Jiao on his back as he struggled to climb the jagged cliff wall littered with sharp rocks. The fierce wind roaring up from the bottom of the gorge howled wildly, as if it wanted to blow them straight off, and under such extreme conditions, his internal force was of no use at all. He could only rely on his raw physical strength, dragging his younger sister up step by step.

Before long, his right hand had already been worn to the point of being torn and bloody.

The cliff wall bore the marks of his sacrifice, bloody handprints pressed against the stone, glaringly vivid under the darkness of night.

The place where they had fallen was incredibly deep, and no one knew how long it would take to climb back up. The wind here was strong, the air damp and heavy with moisture, and the temperature unbearably cold.

Gu Changqing worried that Gu Jiao would freeze, so he said to her, “JiaoJiao, don’t fall asleep just yet.”

“Mm.”

Gu Jiao murmured a drowsy reply.

“Are you sleepy?” Gu Changqing asked.

Gu Jiao blinked her hazy eyes and said, “Ah? Mm, a little.”

Her sudden drowsiness was unlike her usual stamina, and Gu Changqing asked in worry, “Are you badly injured?”

“I’m not.” Gu Jiao shook her head. She had been feeling unusually sleepy these days, likely because of her pregnancy.

Gu Changqing gripped a protruding rock with one hand. “Then sleep for a while. Once we’re up there, I’ll wake you.”

He slowly transferred some of his internal force into her to maintain her body’s warmth.

Human potential truly was boundless. At first, he had not even been able to use his internal force, yet now he managed to force out at least a little. But that was all he could muster, climbing still relied entirely on brute force.

A comforting warmth spread through Gu Jiao’s body, and her head grew heavy as it tilted onto his shoulder.

Drowsily, she whispered, “Gu Changqing, I have good news to tell you.”

Hearing her soft voice that was almost like a dream-murmur, Gu Changqing’s lips curved faintly as he asked, “What good news?”

With her eyes closed, half-asleep, Gu Jiao said, “I have a baby in my belly.”

Gu Changqing was so shocked that his entire body jolted as though struck by lightning. His hands and feet went stiff, and he nearly lost his grip. His feet even dislodged two stones beneath him!

After steadying himself again, his eyes widened as round as copper bells.

What did she just say?

She had a baby in her belly?

He, he, he was going to be an uncle?

……

Halfway up the mountain, several of the sect’s Protectors arrived together.

Duke An lay weakly on the edge of the cliff, gazing into the abyss that seemed to have no bottom.

The Second Protector stood behind him, a little further in, occasionally glancing down as well.

The Third Protector walked over. He glanced at the corpses on the ground, then asked the Second Protector, “Second Protector, what on earth happened here? Who injured our Sword Lodge disciples? And this man, wasn’t he supposed to be sent to the ferry? Why is he still here? Also, where is Old Seventh?”

The Second Protector spoke with a grave expression, “I just came from the front. Old Seventh is already dead.”

“What?” The Third Protector was greatly startled.

The others were also taken aback.

There was no second outsider here, and at once everyone’s eyes turned toward Duke An, who was filled with grief and anger.

But Duke An was crippled, and after a moment’s thought, they dismissed that suspicion.

The First Protector asked, “Second Brother, what exactly is going on?”

The Second Protector stepped back a couple of paces, clasped his hands behind his back, and sighed. “It was Duke An’s adopted daughter.”

The Third Protector was so agitated that he strode forward and seized the Second Protector’s arm. “She came? These people, she killed them? Where is she now?”

The Second Protector glanced toward the cliff beside him and sighed again. “She fell.”

Everyone: “…”

The Second Protector explained, “At the time, I didn’t know who she was. I thought she was one of Duke An’s hidden guards, so… I struck her with a palm attack.”

That palm strike had been delivered at an extremely treacherous angle that it could easily have killed Gu Jiao on the spot. Duke An had risked his life to shield her, and even so, she had not been smashed to death on the ground or dashed against the rocks. Instead, she had fallen down the cliff——

The First Protector frowned. “If she’s dead, then we’ll never get that medicine chest again——”

The silent Eighth Protector suddenly stepped forward, tilting his ear toward the cliff. “Listen! Do you hear that? There’s movement below!”

The Second Protector recalled, “Just now, someone jumped down after her. I don’t know if it was…”

The Third Protector was impatient and cut him off: “What do you mean, you don’t know? Saving lives is what matters now! Hurry! Bring the ropes!”

There happened to be a rope on the ground that had been used to bind Duke An, but it was not long enough. The Eighth Protector went ahead and fetched the longest coil of rope, tied a dead knot, and tossed it down.

“Is it here?” the Third Protector asked.

“Impossible to confirm.” The First Protector frowned. “The wind below is too strong, the sound is scattered, and it’s hard to tell the direction.”

The Third Protector shouted into the abyss, “Hey——are you still alive down there? Make a sound!”

Gu Changqing heard the voice from above, but the wind had shifted, no longer blowing from below upward, but now rushing downward. The moment he raised his head, the wind roared into his mouth and throat, preventing him from uttering a sound.

All of a sudden, Little Nine, circling in the sky, let out a sharp cry, dove downward, and caught the end of the rope in its beak. Battling against the fierce gale, it flew toward Gu Jiao and Gu Changqing.

The violent wind tore its feathers apart.

But it did not stop.

It delivered the rope into Gu Changqing’s hand.

Gu Changqing raised his head toward the sky and tugged on the rope.

The Third Protector felt the pull from above and his eyes lit up. “It moved! It moved!”

Not the swaying caused by the wind, but a tug.

Someone had caught hold of it!

The First Protector immediately commanded, “Quick! Pull them up!”

The Second and Third Protectors worked together, with the Fourth Protector joining in as well. Three martial experts exerted their full strength, hauling on the rope.

Gu Changqing felt the immense force pulling upward. He held the rope with his right hand, caught the exhausted Little Nine with his left, and in one swift motion, they were pulled up halfway up the mountain!

The two landed safely. Gu Changqing collapsed onto the ground, while Gu Jiao still lay steadily on his back.

The Second Protector rushed over first, leaning close to Gu Jiao’s nose. Finding that she was still breathing, he let out a long sigh of relief.

After all, she was the one he had struck down the cliff. If something had truly happened to her, he would be unable to escape responsibility.

As for the other man, he did not care whether he lived or died.

Duke An propped himself up with his elbow, dragging himself little by little closer. “Changqing, how are you? How is JiaoJiao?”

Gu Changqing took a breath and replied, “JiaoJiao’s fine. She just fell asleep.”

Duke An touched her face and hand; her face was cold, but her hand was warm.

JiaoJiao was fine… She was fine…

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
