Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
Duke An always went out with his death warriors and they were all skilled fighters, so for someone to have taken Duke An from them meant the attackers were not ordinary experts.
The three people exchanged a look, and the same guess rose in their minds.
Sword Lodge.
Gu Jiao asked, “Did they leave any message?”
Steward Zheng shook his head through his sobs, “No… nothing… they just took him and left…”
Gu Jiao’s tone turned grave. “Where did this happen?”
Steward Zheng choked out, “By the east bank of Li Lake! I saw them head toward the west city gate——”
Xiao Heng’s eyes flashed coldly. “West city gate… do they intend to take Duke An back to Sword Lodge?”
Indeed. JiaoJiao was Duke An’s adopted daughter; with Duke An in their hands, would they not have leverage over JiaoJiao?
If they planned to lure JiaoJiao to Sword Lodge, it was likely because they found out about the little medicine chest and therefore needed to take JiaoJiao as well.
“I’m going out. Wait at home——”
Xiao Heng’s last word had barely left his mouth before Gu Jiao had already bound her hair without hesitation.
……
At dusk, an unremarkable-looking carriage rolled out of the north city gate of the capital.
The coachman urged the horses on warily, and four attendants rode in escort.
Inside the carriage, two men sat facing each other, one was the abducted Duke An, and the other was the swordsman who had rescued Li Jiangping the previous night.
The swordsman wore a silver mask that concealed his face, but from the skin at his neck and hands it was clear he was young, and when he spoke it confirmed Duke An’s suspicions. He’s no more than about thirty years old.
“Duke An, we mean you no harm; please keep calm.” He said with a smile to Duke An.
Duke An remained composed the whole time and did not make any needless calls for help; when he heard the man speak he asked plainly, “Where do you intend to take me?”
The swordsman gave a cold laugh. “That’s none of your concern, just cooperate, or I won’t mind giving you a little pain.”
Duke An was not intimidated by the threat and said calmly, “You are from Sword Lodge.”
A flicker of surprise crossed the swordsman’s eyes. He hadn’t expected Duke An to guess so easily. But he soon broke into a smile. “As expected of Duke An, quick-witted indeed.”
That was an admission.
It seemed Duke An’s situation was grim.
After all, only the dead could keep such a secret, and they clearly did not plan to let him go alive.
If he died it would be bad enough, but his greater fear was that his death would bring disaster to JiaoJiao.
The swordsman sneered, “Why so quiet? Plotting an escape? Don’t waste your breath, you can’t get away. Don’t expect anyone to come to your rescue either; they all think we headed for the west city gate, and by the time they realize it we’ll already be on a boat.”
Duke An looked at him coolly. “Whom do you intend to threaten by seizing me? Duke An Estate, the Xuanyuan Family, or the Great Yan’s imperial family?”
“None of them.” The swordsman smiled. “We merely wish to invite your adopted daughter to visit our island.”
So it really was JiaoJiao they were after.
A flash of murderous intent passed through Duke An’s eyes.
The swordsman took in that murderous look and sneered, “Oh, you plan to kill me? What can a cripple like you do? I can snap you with a flick of my fingers! But don’t worry, your body is so frail that I’m afraid if I go too hard I’ll kill you, and then we won’t be able to fetch your adopted daughter!”
Duke An asked evenly, “JiaoJiao has no grievance with you, why target her?”
The swordsman let out a laugh and said, “Of course there is enmity. After all, she slaughtered so many disciples of the Sword Lodge at the border. Of course, those were only outer sect disciples, so the grudge is not a great one. As long as she obediently hands over what we want, perhaps we may consider sparing her life.”
Sparing JiaoJiao was a lie. What they truly wanted was something she possessed.
Duke An said, “Whatever it is you want, I can purchase it again for you. Is it her suit of armor, or her weapon?”
The swordsman replied with deep meaning, “It is far more precious than those things. Even if I told you, you would not understand.”
With that, he lifted the curtain and asked the coachman, “How much longer until the ferry crossing?”
“Three hours.” The coachman answered.
“No shortcut?” The swordsman asked.
“There is.”
“Then take it!”
“The shortcut passes through a forest, we may encounter wild beasts…”
“Are we afraid of beasts? Take the shortcut!”
The swordsman had spoken, so the coachman could only comply.
Fortunately for them, their luck was decent, and they encountered no danger within the forest.
An hour later, they galloped along the official road toward Yushui Town.
“The ferry is just ahead, lord. Are you certain there will be a boat?” The coachman asked.
“That is not your concern.” The swordsman snapped, far less patient with the coachman than with Duke An.
“Yes.” The coachman muttered and fell silent.
Of course there would be a boat; everything had long been arranged. They would take the waterway into the State of Yan and then return to the Sword Lodge from within the State of Yan’s borders.
He had deliberately left the steward behind to deliver word to that girl; as long as she was not a fool, she should be able to guess she must go to the Sword Lodge to seek people.
Girl, we will see you at the Sword Lodge.
The carriage halted at the ferry, where a large black-canopied boat slowly approached the shore.
Li Jiangping stood on the deck, waving his hand toward them.
The swordsman saw him from the carriage window, nodded, lowered the curtain, and jumped down.
Just as he was preparing to lift Duke An down together with his wheelchair, a sudden eagle’s cry pierced the silent night sky, so sharp it seemed to tear open the heavens, and a surge of murderous intent poured forth like a tidal wave.
Both the swordsman and Li Jiangping felt their chests tighten as a dreadful premonition swept through them.
The heavy pounding of hooves drew nearer, and when the two turned their heads, they saw, from within the darkness, Gu Jiao riding forth upon Black Wind King’s powerful back.
With the red-tasseled spear slung across her back, she carried a killing aura strong enough to shatter mountains and rivers. Her scarlet battle robes fluttered wildly in the night wind, and her dark armor reflected a chilling gleam under the moonlight.
The swordsman was stunned. “This is…”
Li Jiangping had seen Gu Jiao before, but the Gu Jiao of the household and the Gu Jiao now astride the horse, radiating the wrath of some killing god, were utterly different beings. For a moment, he did not dare recognize her.
“Get on the boat!”
At last he reacted.
Gu Jiao, astride the vigorous Black Wind King, coldly drew back her bow and loosed an arrow, shooting him straight into the water!

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
