Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

Something was wrong.

There was something strong with everyone’s reactions.

Gu Jiao lowered her voice and asked Xiao Heng, “Did you let something slip?”

Xiao Heng cleared his throat lightly and replied in a low voice, “No.”

This blame, he couldn’t shoulder.

“Then what’s going on?” Gu Jiao muttered in confusion.

No matter how clever Gu Jiao was, she could never have guessed that the birthmark on her face was actually a gecko cinnabar, for after all, who would place a gecko cinnabar there of all places, and furthermore, who would make it so large?

Xiao Heng truly couldn’t bear to see her remain in the dark any longer. He decided to tell her the truth about the gecko cinnabar, but just as he opened his mouth, little Gu Xiaobao was carried over by a young palace maid.

Gu Xiaobao was sweaty from playing in the sun, and the palace maid had brought him to change clothes.

The moment he caught sight of Gu Jiao, who seemed as though she were surrounded by an ethereal aura, his eyes immediately locked onto her.

Children always had little resistance to beautiful things and would be irresistibly drawn in.

He wriggled in the palace maid’s arms and climbed down on his own.

He was usually such a lazy little fellow that he could hardly take five steps in a day, yet now he came down voluntarily.

It showed just how much he was drawn to her.

He toddled up behind Gu Jiao, circled around her, and lifted his small head to take a closer look.

Then, he let out a surprised little cry, “Ah?”

“Xiaobao?” Gu Jiao curved her lips into a smile, bent down, and stretched out her arms to pick the little one up.

Gu Xiaobao’s eyes, black and bright like gemstones, blinked as he looked at her.

He studied the left side of her face, then the right, confirming that this was indeed his elder sister. Yet it also seemed that something that used to be on her face was now gone.

He turned his head toward Yao shi and Grandaunt’s group, waved his tiny hand seriously, and declared, “None, gone.”

“Xiaobao, what’s gone?” Gu Jiao asked him.

Gu Xiaobao looked back at her, pointed at her face, and moved his hand again, “Gone. Flew away.”

“What flew away?” Gu Jiao still didn’t connect it with her birthmark, but Xiaobao’s reaction clearly meant there was something wrong with her face.

She handed Gu Xiaobao over to Xiao Heng and turned to go into her room in Renshou Palace.

Everyone exchanged glances.

Gu Yan began counting down, “Three, two, one——”

And the very moment he finished, a thunderous scream erupted from inside the room, “Waaahhh——”

Bang!

The sound was far louder than Little Yiyi’s cries.

The roof almost seemed as if it might be blown off, the birds in the trees scattered in a frenzy, and leaves fluttered down all over everyone.

Xiao Heng plucked a leaf from Xiaobao’s mouth, arched an eyebrow, and said, “Her reaction is far greater than mine.”

……

When Xiao Heng entered with Gu Xiaobao in tow, Gu Jiao had already calmed down.

She sat quietly before a bronze mirror, its surface dented from a punch.

It was, after all, just a birthmark, yet for some reason the difference between having it and not having it was so great that even Gu Jiao herself didn’t recognize her own reflection.

The first instant she saw that unfamiliar face in the mirror, it utterly overturned her sense of reality.

She had thought she had seen a ghost and had smashed her fist straight into it——

Only after striking did she realize that person was herself.

Slowly turning around, she stared dazedly at Xiao Heng and said, “Husband, they say a woman is at her most beautiful when she’s nourished by love, but don’t you think… this nourishment has gone a little overboard?”

Xiao Heng chuckled softly, leaned down slightly, and covered Gu Xiaobao’s little ears with both hands as he said, barely suppressing his laughter, “It’s gecko cinnabar.”

Gu Jiao’s almond-shaped eyes widened, “Gecko, gecko cinnabar?”

Xiao Heng shook his head with a helpless smile. “This matter… Mother knows the details more clearly.”

Gu Jiao hurried off to ask Yao shi, and thanks to that, Gu Xiaoshun also got to hear the whole story from start to finish.

Gu Jiao’s little face darkened. “So it was the abbot.”

What the heck?

Do the monks in that temple all drink wine?

And after drinking, they go and mark people with gecko cinnabar?

No wonder his hand slipped and he made such a huge blot!

Gu Jiao muttered darkly, “I’ll settle accounts with him when we get back!”

“But then, how did Ah Yan find out?” Gu Xiaoshun asked.

That day, when Yao shi explained the situation to Xiao Heng, neither Gu Xiaoshun nor Gu Yan had been present. The ones there had been Grandaunt, Old Chief, Gu Changqing, and Gu Chengfeng.

“I guessed.” Gu Yan said.

Just because he didn’t like reading didn’t mean his mind was dull. On the contrary, he was observant, cautious, and meticulous.

Nothing that happened at home could escape his eyes.

Gu Jiao pouted. “And you didn’t think to tell me earlier.”

Thinking about how she had flaunted herself in front of them all, boasting without shame that she had consummated her marriage while still carrying that gecko cinnabar, truly left her with an indelible black mark in history!

Yao shi held her daughter’s hand, unable to hide her joy, and said warmly, “My JiaoJiao has finally become beautiful.”

In her eyes, no matter how Gu Jiao looked, she was always the best. But if one could have good looks, who would not wish for them?

There had been a time when she had felt resentment toward the abbot, but later she had come to think differently.

In the countryside, where there was no one to protect her daughter, having an unattractive face might not have been such a terrible thing.

Otherwise, with that face alone, who knew how much disaster it might have invited.

“Grandaunt?” Gu Jiao turned her bright eyes toward Empress Dowager Zhuang. “Am I pretty?”

Showing off already?

Empress Dowager Zhuang gave a cold little snort. “More conceited than a little monk.”

Of course she was beautiful.

Although she had already guessed that once the gecko cinnabar was gone Gu Jiao would no longer be ugly, she had not expected her to be this beautiful.

Her beauty had been thoroughly sealed away by the gecko cinnabar.

She was still young now, her features not yet fully grown, but as she matured, she would only become more beautiful, perhaps one day reaching the very height of beauty itself.

As for herself, she was already just a pile of old bones.

She did not know if she could live long enough to see that day.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
