Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

Gu Xiaobao only poked out a round little head. He was so short that he barely reached above the threshold.

He strained to lift his head with great effort, and because a child’s head was heavy, the motion made his already unsteady little body wobble precariously.

At last, he plopped down on his bottom.

However, he didn’t land on the ground, for a soft, fair hand caught him just in time.

Gu Jiao bent down and gently lifted him up in her arms.

Looking at that little face, almost a perfect copy of Gu Yan’s, Gu Jiao let out a soft sound of amazement.

That tiny nose, that small mouth, that round little face were all simply a miniature version of Gu Yan.

Human cubs were just too adorable!

She really wanted to pinch him!

But babies were fragile, so Gu Jiao restrained the urge to squeeze his face and only poked his little cheek lightly with her fingertip.

First one side, then the other.

He was so soft that her heart practically melted.

“Do you still remember me?” Gu Jiao asked with a smile.

Gu Xiaobao stared blankly at Gu Jiao, clearly not remembering her at all.

Gu Jiao nodded slightly. “That’s true. When I left, you were only five months old. In the blink of an eye, you’re already over a year now.”

Gu Xiaobao could not understand what she was saying, his round eyes spinning curiously.

Gu Jiao turned to Xuanyuan Qi and Liao Chen and said, “My little brother, Gu Xiaobao.”

“Aiya——”

At the end of the corridor, Aunt Zhou’s son was carrying several bags of rice home when he slipped and fell.

“I’ll go check.” Xiao Heng said to Gu Jiao.

“Mm.” Gu Jiao nodded.

“Xiaobao, Xiaobao——”

From under the eaves came Yao shi’s calling voice.

Hearing his mother’s voice, Gu Xiaobao squirmed in Gu Jiao’s arms, wanting to get down.

Worried that he might trip in his hurry, Gu Jiao simply held him tight and pushed open the courtyard gate.

Yao shi immediately saw her daughter returning home. She wore a long blue dress, her figure straight and elegant. Her complexion was slightly darker than before, her features had matured, and her brows carried a hint of spirited heroism, making her even more striking than she used to be.

In Yao shi’s eyes, her daughter was always the most beautiful.

Looking at the daughter she hadn’t seen for over a year, her nose suddenly stung with emotion.

“Mom, mom.”

Gu Xiaobao reached out his tiny hands toward her.

Turning her face away to discreetly wipe her reddening eyes, Yao shi then smiled and approached, taking Gu Xiaobao from her. “When did you get back…?”

She meant when she had arrived at Bishui Alley.

Gu Jiao’s affairs in the State of Yan were something she had heard bits and pieces about from Xiao Heng and Gu Yan. She also knew that today she would be returning to the capital with the State of Yan envoys.

She had thought that, since a banquet was being held in the palace, Gu Jiao would first go there and only return home after the banquet was over.

Gu Jiao said, “Just now. I knocked, and Xiaobao came out.”

Yao shi chuckled as she looked at her son. “Usually, we can’t even get you to step outside, but what’s this today? Did you somehow know your sister was back and went to open the door for her? Did you call her big sister yet?”

Gu Xiaobao buried his head straight into Yao shi’s embrace.

Unable to help herself, Yao shi laughed and said to Gu Jiao, “He’s shy.”

Gu Jiao poked at his tiny, stuck-out little bottom.

Gu Xiaobao kept his face hidden in Yao shi’s arms, but he raised his small hand and clumsily reached back to pry at Gu Jiao’s fingers on his little butt.

Gu Jiao burst out laughing.

“Oh, right, I also brought two guests along.” After teasing him enough, Gu Jiao led Xuanyuan Qi and Liao Chen into the courtyard and said to Yao shi, “This is Supreme Commander Xuanyuan of Great Yan, Jing Kong’s granduncle. And this is his son, Xuanyuan shizi, who is… Jing Kong’s uncle.”

After speaking, she turned to introduce Yao shi to the two of them. “This is…”

She paused mid-sentence.

Yao shi glanced at her, her long lashes trembling slightly, and said to the two of them in a gentle voice, “I am JiaoJiao’s mother.”

“Madame Gu.” The father and son cupped their hands respectfully to greet her.

While they were speaking, the Xuanyuan family’s carriage arrived as well, and the servants carried down several chests, which were the meeting gifts they had brought.

“We’re all family here, there’s no need to be so formal.” Yao shi said.

“Just a small token of respect. Please accept it, Madam,” Liao Chen said.

Gu Jiao held Yao shi’s arm and whispered softly, “Take it.”

Since her daughter said so, Yao shi could only accept the gifts.

She looked kindly at the father and son. “You two must have come to see Jing Kong, right? He went to the orchard with Yan’er and Xiaoshun to pick fruit. They’ve been gone for a while, so they should be back soon. Come inside first and have some tea.”

The father and son followed her lead and entered the house respectfully.

“Hm? You came through the city gate. Did you run into Ah Heng?” Yao shi asked Gu Jiao.

Liao Chen thought to himself, run into him? It’s more than that! I was practically force-fed a whole bowl of dog food. I’m still full from it.

Gu Jiao said, “We came back together. He went to help out at Aunt Zhou’s house.”

Yao shi felt relieved. “That’s good, that’s good.”

Grannie Fang wasn’t home today, and Yu Ya’er had gone to buy spices.

It was difficult for Yao shi to watch the children alone, so she had hired another servant girl and a cook. The cook was in the kitchen preparing food, and the servant girl’s name was Yuanyang.

“Yuanyang has been here for a year now. She’s quite quick and capable.” Yao shi said to her. “Go pour tea for the young miss and the guests.”

The moment Yuanyang heard this form of address, she understood Gu Jiao’s identity and hurriedly brewed tea and brought it over.

Gu Xiaobao still clung to Yao shi’s arms, but from time to time, he would secretly turn his head to peek at Gu Jiao. If he caught her looking back at him, he would immediately jerk his head away and bury it back into Yao shi’s embrace.

Outside, the sky was dim, and Yao shi hadn’t clearly seen the guests’ faces, but the room was lit by an oil lamp.

Her gaze fell on Liao Chen’s face, and she suddenly let out a soft cry of surprise. “I’ve seen you before.”

Liao Chen looked at her with surprise. “Oh?”

Yao shi meant no offense, but to confirm she wasn’t mistaken, she studied him a little more carefully and then said with certainty, “Yes, I really have seen you before. It was at that temple near Qingquan Village. You were a monk there… I remember… the abbot… even called you junior brother…”

In an instant, Liao Chen switched into monk mode. He pressed one palm together in a Buddhist greeting and said calmly, “Amitabha. So Benefactor Yao has indeed met this poor monk.”

Yao shi was dumbfounded, unable to comprehend what was going on.

Was he truly a family heir from the State of Yan, or was he actually a monk from that temple?

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
