The Black Wind Cavalry’s reserve forces operated with remarkable efficiency. By the time Chang Wei was dragged over on a stretcher cart, the tents for treating the wounded had already been fully set up.

Gu Jiao had just completed a surgery and instructed the cavalryman at the entrance, “Bring him in.”

Two cavalrymen from the Reserve Battalion carried the blood-soaked Chang Wei into the medical tent and laid him down on a specially designed foldable bamboo bed.

Inside the tent, luminous night pearls were strung up to provide lighting.

In addition, numerous oil lamps and candles were lit, and Gu Jiao even utilized the small flashlight from her little medicine chest to supplement the illumination.

Chang Wei’s armor had already been removed earlier by Zhou Ren before he was brought in.

Gu Jiao used scissors to cut open his upper garments, fully exposing the wound on the left side of his chest.

Raising her gloved, disinfected hands, Gu Jiao looked down at the unconscious Chang Wei and muttered, “I rarely miss when I strike to kill. I wonder if this could be called the will of heaven.”

......

When Gu Jiao stepped out after finishing the operation, she found Advisor Hu waiting at the entrance, who quickly reported to her that Mu Qingchen had returned.

“Zhao Lei seems to have died in battle.”

Advisor Hu sighed emotionally. “The exact details weren’t shared by Young Master Mu. Perhaps, My Lord, you might want to ask him yourself.”

As he spoke, something suddenly occurred to him, and he visibly flinched. “No, no! My Lord! You’re so exhausted, you should sleep first! It’s not too late to ask after you’ve rested——”

But Gu Jiao was already walking away.

Advisor Hu watched the slender figure disappear into the distance, rubbing his chest with a sigh.

In the beginning, he had followed the young commander hoping to rise in rank and make a name for himself. But somewhere along the way, his feelings had changed.

Advisor Hu glanced up at the sky with a puzzled expression and muttered, “He’s not even my son, so why am I worrying like this?”

Mu Qingchen stood far off in the distance, completely alone, leaning against a large tree by the roadside, retching violently.

Everything that could be thrown up had already been expelled.

Now, only the relentless waves of nausea remained, pounding through him.

Gu Jiao approached from behind, glanced sideways at him with calm indifference, and said, “First time killing someone? Not used to it?”

Hearing Gu Jiao’s voice, Mu Qingchen forced down another gag, wiped his mouth with his sleeve, and panted as he said, “I killed five people.”

Zhao Lei hadn’t died by his hand.

He had never killed anyone before, and this psychological barrier was something he simply couldn’t overcome. So instead, he orchestrated a scheme that led to Zhao Lei falling from his horse and getting trampled to death under the hooves of the Nangong Family’s fourth master.

But what he hadn’t anticipated at all was that the five thousand-strong Nangong Family forces weren’t so easily shaken off or outrun.

Mu Qingchen spoke with difficulty, his voice rough and strained, “You said we didn’t need to fight head-on, but you knew all along that bloodshed was inevitable.”

Gu Jiao clasped her hands behind her back and replied coolly, “All I told you was to retreat once you gained the upper hand, and to flee as soon as possible. I never said there wouldn’t be fighting, or that no one would die. What are your casualties?”

Mu Qingchen replied in a low voice, “…About a dozen cavalrymen were injured.”

Because he had initially refused to kill, the soldiers of the Black Wind Cavalry had to protect him, and one of them had been severely wounded by the rebel forces of the Nangong Family.

“So long as they all made it back alive, that’s enough.” Gu Jiao said with genuine sincerity.

But Mu Qingchen couldn’t find anything good about it. Just thinking about the sensation of taking lives again made him shudder uncontrollably.

“Your first time killing someone… did you feel like this too?” He asked.

“I don’t remember.” Gu Jiao said. “I’ve killed too many.”

Mu Qingchen stared at her in stunned silence.

But Gu Jiao offered no explanation.

She turned and began walking back, speaking as she went, “You’d best get used to it soon. There won’t be any more easy missions like this for you to practice on. The main forces of the State of Jin have already broken through Tianshan Pass, and the army from the State of Liang will reach Yanmen Pass within three days.”

“Mu Qingchen, the real battle has only just begun!”

……

At the hour of the maoshi(5-7 am), all of the Black Wind cavalrymen who had been resting outside the city had already awakened. They now stood in orderly formation, lined up in rows and standing tall against the wind.

No matter how physically exhausted or depleted they might be, the moment the order to assemble was given, they could immediately shift into a state of full combat readiness.

After a sleepless night of nonstop action, Gu Jiao was now astride the Black Wind King’s back, her crimson battle robe blazing like fire, her dark iron armor gleaming like a blade.

Amidst the vast, whistling expanse of heaven and earth, not even the howling wind could disperse the sharp aura of killing intent and will to fight radiating from the young commander’s body.

Having witnessed the fierce battle the day before, everyone now viewed this young commander with renewed respect and awe.

Whether or not they were ready to pledge their loyalty to Gu Jiao was one matter, but entrusting her with their backs in battle was something they could do without hesitation.

On the battlefield, she was king!

Gu Jiao held the reins in one hand and her helmet in the other, her eyes calm and steady as she gazed at the assembled Black Wind Cavalry and called out in a clear voice, “The tenth and ninth articles of military law!”

All the soldiers straightened their backs, and with firm and righteous expressions, they recited aloud——

“To steal another’s property for personal gain, or to seize another’s trophy for personal credit, this is to rob the army, and those who commit it shall be executed!”

“To torment the people wherever we go, or to coerce and defile women, this is to disgrace the army, and those who commit it shall be executed!”

Gu Jiao continued, “Very good. You are soldiers of Great Yan, and the people of Quyang City are citizens of our nation. Keep your duty firmly in mind. You must not, under any circumstances, harm the city’s people in any form.”

With that, she turned her gaze toward the cavalrymen holding high the grand flag of the State of Yan and the flying eagle banner of the Xuanyuan Family, and declared, “Enter the city!”

Nearly fifty thousand troops marched grandly into the city. The sky was still pale with early morning light, and most of the city’s residents were still asleep. The Black Wind Cavalry’s horses stepped softly, and the soldiers made a conscious effort to minimize the clinking of their armor.

Even so, by the time they reached halfway through the city, a few early risers among the citizens had already begun their day’s labor.

When they saw the Black Wind Cavalry, looking like gods descending to earth, they froze in place, too frightened to move.

In the marketplace, a vendor carrying goods from the mountains whispered to his companion, “I told you I heard someone smashing at the city gates last night, but you wouldn’t believe me! Look, haven’t they broken in?”

The townspeople dared not make a sound.

The difference between the Black Wind Cavalry and the Nangong Army was obvious at a glance. First was the sheer difference in presence, followed by the stark contrast in armor and warhorses.

Not to mention the banners being held at the head of the ranks; one of them was completely different from before.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
