The embroidered-uniform guards instinctively took a step back, a reflexive reaction to danger that was almost automatic. For a moment, they found themselves unable to control their actions.
The Crown Prince clenched his fists.
He had witnessed this young man defeat the Shaolin monks in that polo match, and back then, the young man had not been nearly as formidable.
What had happened? How had this kid’s strength grown so much?
Gu Jiao was actually quite surprised herself. After making her move, she realized that her strength had recovered significantly, almost to about fifty percent of what it had been in her previous life.
It seemed that the fight with Han Ci had not been in vain.
If six more embroidered-uniform guards from the Crown Prince Estate came at her now, she would not be as helpless as she had been before. She could take them all down!
The Crown Prince found the situation dire. He hadn’t expected this kid to become so strong, and the number of people he brought along wasn’t enough... there was no way to search anymore...
How infuriating!
The Crown Prince’s fists creaked as he tightened his grip.
But at that moment, a voice suddenly came from behind, “The Emperor has arrived——”
The Emperor had arrived?!
The Crown Prince’s expression changed instantly.
But in the next instant, a sense of secret delight spread within him.
His imperial father had come at just the right time. As long as he claimed that an assassin had infiltrated the place and might now endanger the safety of Shangguan Yan and her son, the Emperor would surely allow him to carry out a search.
The Crown Prince gave a subtle glance to the leader of the embroidered-uniform guards standing nearby and whispered, "When we find something, you know what to do, right?"
The leader of the embroidered-uniform guards whispered back, “Yes.”
The Crown Prince looked toward the direction where the Emperor was coming from and lowered his voice even further. “This is our only chance. If we don’t deal with Long Aotian now, once they move him to a safe place, heal his injuries, and return to expose us, we’ll be in a very passive position.”
The leader of the embroidered-uniform guards understood immediately. “Rest assured, Your Highness, I won’t give Long Aotian a chance to speak.”
When he finds Long Aotian, he will kill him with a single strike!
The Emperor had been dragged here by the Little County Princess; not even the heavy rain could dampen her enthusiasm to visit the Imperial Advisor's Hall to see her young friend.
Palace servants held a large oiled paper umbrella for the Emperor while the Little County Princess was cradled in the Emperor’s arms, her small body hidden beneath his cloak.
“Are we there yet?” Her adorable little head poked out from under the cloak.
Upon seeing the tense situation at the scene, the Emperor’s face darkened. He didn’t let the Little County Princess see it but handed her over to Zhang Dequan, saying, “Take the Little County Princess inside.”
“Understood.” Zhang Dequan gently took the Little County Princess, cloak and all, into his arms.
“Where are we going?” The Little County Princess asked from the safety of her cloak.
Zhang Dequan’s expression was serious, though his tone carried a lightheartedness as if nothing had happened. “We’re going to meet Little County Princess’s classmate.”
The Little County Princess obediently replied, “Mm, okay!”
Zhang Dequan carried the Little County Princess to the room where Xiao Heng and Little Jing Kong were staying.
As the Little County Princess’s savior, Little Jing Kong had earned the right to recuperate at the Imperial Advisor’s Hall. The Eldest Imperial Grandson had taken a liking to him and was willing to let the little one keep him company. This was well-known among the people of the Imperial Advisor’s Hall.
Inside the room, the two little ones met. They flapped their little arms, like two fledglings just out of their nests.
“Little Xue, you’re here?”
“Yeah, Jing Kong, I’m here!”
Zhang Dequan gently closed the door behind them.
Outside the Qilin Hall, the Emperor glanced at the tense standoff between the Crown Prince and Xiao Heng and asked in a deep voice, “What is going on here?”
Xiao Heng coughed weakly a couple of times. Gone was the arrogance he had displayed in front of the Crown Prince earlier. Instead, he spoke in a tone that was both aggrieved and feeble, "Imperial grandfather, the Crown Prince is bullying me."
The Crown Prince nearly choked on his own breath.
It was then that he finally understood what had been off about his nephew earlier. Before the Emperor arrived, how spirited and arrogant he had been!
The Crown Prince gritted his teeth. "Weren’t you just fine a moment ago? How is it that as soon as imperial father arrives, you suddenly start acting all sickly?"
Xiao Heng did not deny it. "Isn't it because earlier, no one was there to back me and my mother up? If I didn't hold on, should I just stand by and watch you bully my mother?"
The corners of the Crown Prince's mouth twitched. What a shameless person!
Xiao Heng continued to complain. He glanced at the embroidered-uniform guards on the ground, who had been beaten by Gu Jiao and were now unconscious and vomiting blood. With a pitiful expression, he said, "Luckily, Young Master Xiao acted in time, or the one lying there now would be me. Young Master Xiao, you shouldn't stand out in the rain, you’re injured yourself."
Gu Jiao walked over to Xiao Heng’s side.
The Emperor's gaze turned cold as he looked at the embroidered-uniform guard who had passed out. He turned to the Crown Prince and asked, "Did your embroidered-uniform guards attack Qing’er?"
The Crown Prince hurriedly cupped his hands in a respectful gesture. "Imperial father, please allow me to explain!"
This is bad. How has this brat become so good at tattling?
The Emperor looked at Xiao Heng, who was pale, and then at Shangguan Yan, who was leaning on her cane. His voice was icy as he said, "Alright, Zhen will listen to your explanation."
The Crown Prince inwardly cursed his bad luck. If it had only been Shangguan Yan who had been targeted, that could have been overlooked, as improper as it was. After all, Shangguan Yan was now just a commoner. But he had allowed someone to lay a hand on the Eldest Imperial Grandson.
The Emperor had not stripped the Eldest Imperial Grandson of his title!
The Crown Prince felt a headache coming on.
But he could not let this only opportunity slip by.
He had no choice but to take a risk.
He said, "Imperial father, there was a traitor in my residence who attempted to assassinate me. He was injured by my guard, who pursued him and discovered that he had fled into the Imperial Advisor's Hall. The reason I insisted on searching was because I feared that he might harm my third sister and Qing’er. However, for some unknown reason, I was met with repeated obstruction from third sister and Qing’er."
"Is that true?" The Emperor turned his cold gaze to Xiao Heng and Shangguan Yan.
The mother and son both shook their heads in unison. "No!"
The Crown Prince: "…!!"
Shangguan Yan sighed and said, "So it’s a search for an assassin. Why couldn’t the Crown Prince just speak properly? Why did you have to resort to violence right from the start? Those who know will say you’re here to catch an assassin, but those who don’t will think you’re here to arrest me. Please, go ahead."
With that, she stepped aside.
Xiao Heng and Gu Jiao also moved to the side.
The Crown Prince was on the verge of exploding with anger at this pair of mother and son who had turned everything upside down.
But why was Shangguan Yan suddenly allowing him to search?
Had Long Aotian already been moved?
It couldn’t be. His men had secured both the front and back doors of the Qilin Hall. Long Aotian had to still be inside!
The Crown Prince led the embroidered-uniform guards into the hall to search.
As he brushed past Shangguan Yan, she casually remarked in a low voice, "Crown Prince, when we played the game of hiding things as children, you never won."
The Crown Prince’s pupils contracted. He clenched his fingers tightly, casting a cold glance at Shangguan Yan, and whispered, "Third sister, don’t worry, this time, I will not lose!"
A dozen embroidered-uniform guards split up, searching each room.
The Emperor, the Crown Prince, Xiao Heng, Gu Jiao, and Shangguan Yan waited in the main hall.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
