Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

The Imperial Advisor lying to Gu Jiao wasn’t entirely impossible.

In the study, he displayed various items belonging to Jing Yinyin, creating the impression that he cared deeply for her. Then, he tried to convince her that she was Jing Yinyin, using this as a means to win her over and make her work for the Imperial Advisor's Hall.

This speculation seemed quite plausible.

Moreover, that guy clearly held something back just now; there were things he hadn’t finished saying.

Whether she was Jing Yinyin or not, she would verify it herself. It wasn’t something she would blindly believe just because he said so.

At the same time, she wouldn’t disbelieve every word he said just out of suspicion.

…….

The disciple in the small bamboo house offered to escort Gu Jiao, but she declined.

She wanted some quiet time alone.

As she clumsily pushed her wheelchair with her large bear paws and was about to leave the purple bamboo grove, Xiao Heng, who had been waiting outside for quite some time, quickly walked up to her.

"Let me do it." Xiao Heng said.

"Oh." Gu Jiao released her grip, withdrawing her pair of large bear paws and placing them back on her lap.

She had been so preoccupied with her thoughts when she had stepped out earlier that she had forgotten to bring an umbrella.

The sun was blazing, making her eyes ache from the glare.

Suddenly, the light above her dimmed. It was Xiao Heng, holding an oil-paper umbrella over her head.

Xiao Heng said softly, "Lady Nan mentioned that your eyes might be sensitive to light for a few days."

A warm feeling spread through Gu Jiao's heart.

Her husband was truly thoughtful.

She reached out for the umbrella. "I’ll hold it myself; you just push the wheelchair."

Xiao Heng gently declined her offer. "I still have enough strength for this."

Gu Jiao thought about the youthful, strong body she had felt earlier when leaning on him. He was indeed no longer as thin and frail as before.

"Have you been secretly working out behind my back?" She teased. Not only did he have abs, but there was also a hint of pectoral muscles. His arms had smooth, well-defined lines. not overly exaggerated but perfectly firm and just right.

Xiao Heng didn’t even lift an eyelid. He remained composed and unhurried, giving the impression that it was no effort at all. "How could that be? I barely have enough time to study."

The wheelchair was indeed heavy, and using just one hand was proving to be quite strenuous.

But he couldn’t let his wife notice that he was struggling.

A man must never appear incapable!

—Starting tonight, I’ll add an extra hour of exercise to my routine every evening!

……

Xiao Heng summoned all his strength, almost as if tapping into ancient primal power, to push Gu Jiao back to the Qilin Hall. Just as they reached the entrance, they unexpectedly ran into Duke An and Second Master Jing, who were coming out.

During the days Gu Jiao had been unconscious, Duke An had visited daily to check on her.

It was already widely known that Gu Jiao was his adopted child, so there was no need for him to hide his visits. Additionally, he could take the opportunity to check on the Crown Princess as well, though he had to exercise caution.

After all, whenever he and the Crown Princess were seen together, they were immediately labeled as remnants of the Xuanyuan family.

He had just finished greeting the Crown Princess when he heard that Gu Jiao had woken up and was out for a stroll. He couldn't wait to come and see her.

His timing was quite fortunate.

Second Master Jing exclaimed in surprise, "You’re back! My elder brother was just about to go look for Liulang. Huh? Liulang, why are you in a wheelchair too?"

Gu Jiao responded with a soft "Oh..."

Xiao Heng, fearing that she might say something inappropriate again, quickly interjected, "Liulang just woke up and is still very weak. With the weather being so hot, walking too much could lead to heatstroke."

"That makes sense." Second Master Jing accepted the explanation.

Duke An’s concerned gaze fell on Gu Jiao. Dipping his finger into a damp cloth on the armrest, he wrote on it: ‘How do you feel?’

Second Master Jing glanced at Duke An's writing and translated it for Gu Jiao, saying, "My elder brother is asking how you feel."

Gu Jiao replied, "I’m feeling fine."

Duke An continued to write: ‘Are your eyes still hurting?’

There was still a slight pain, but Gu Jiao didn’t want to worry Duke An. She replied, "It doesn’t hurt anymore."

"Let’s talk inside." Xiao Heng said. "It’s too hot out here."

The group moved into Gu Jiao’s room.

Xiao Heng could tell that Gu Jiao had something she wanted to discuss with Duke An. Though he could be incredibly jealous over trivial matters, he knew when to step aside for more serious issues.

Turning to Second Master Jing, he said, "Little Uncle, I have some books to return to the library pavilion. Why don’t you come with me?"

Second Master Jing glanced at the scorching sun that seemed hot enough to melt everything, cleared his throat, and said, "I think I'd rather stay with my elder brother."

Duke An: No, you don’t.

In the end, Second Master Jing was dragged away by Xiao Heng. The number of books Xiao Heng had borrowed from the library pavilion was staggering, enough to require several trips to carry them all back.

"Why am I the one carrying these?" Second Master Jing asked with a look of grievance, staring at Xiao Heng who stood empty-handed.

Xiao Heng sighed dramatically. “Ah, I'm just a sickly person, too weak to even tie up a chicken. Unlike you, Little Uncle, who’s so strong and mighty. Don’t even mention carrying a few books—if I asked you to carry a mountain, you’d manage just fine."

Second Master Jing replied dryly, "At least you’re honest about it."

Xiao Heng: "..."

Once Xiao Heng and Second Master Jing left, the room was left with only Gu Jiao and Duke An.

Little Jing Kong had originally been there, but before Xiao Heng went to find Gu Jiao, he had carried the sleeping child over to Shangguan Yan's room.

The afternoon air was stifling, with not a trace of coolness. The entire Qilin Hall felt like a massive steamer under the blazing sun. Even the ice blocks placed in the room did little to alleviate the heat.

Yet, strangely enough, both of their hearts were calm.

There was a quiet comfort in their shared silence.

To facilitate their conversation, Gu Jiao’s wheelchair was positioned close to Duke An’s right side. In this way, whatever Duke An wrote, she could see clearly.

Dipping his finger in water, Duke An wrote: ‘It seems like you have something to say to me.’

Gu Jiao didn’t deny it. She had just decided to investigate the matter regarding Jing Yinyin when Duke An had unexpectedly come to visit. It seemed like too good an opportunity to miss.

She turned her head to look at Duke An’s handsome profile and asked, "Can you tell me about Jing Yinyin?"

Duke An’s body couldn’t move, but his eyes could blink.

Gu Jiao noticed his eyelashes flutter slightly, which likely indicated some surprise.

Yet, even though he was surprised, he didn’t ask Gu Jiao, "Why are you suddenly asking about Yinyin?" He trusted Gu Jiao completely, without reservation, and was willing to satisfy all her curiosity, never questioning whether she had another motive.

He wrote: ‘What do you want to know about Yinyin?’

A father's longing for his child was boundless. As for matters concerning Yinyin, if he didn’t categorize them, he could talk about every little detail for three days and nights.

Indeed, where should she begin her inquiry?

Perhaps… start with her intelligence?

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
