The scorching summer sun blazed overhead, and the cicadas on the trees chirped incessantly.
Gu Jiao woke up amidst the constant drone of cicadas. Slowly, she opened her eyes, but her vision was obscured by the gauze bandaged over them.
She raised her hand and carefully removed the gauze.
A burst of blinding light immediately pierced her sight, causing her to instinctively close her eyes and turn her head slightly to the side. Only after gradually adjusting to the brightness did she manage to fully open her eyes again.
Through her blurry vision, she could faintly make out the familiar windowsill, the familiar desk, the familiar chair, and… that familiar little figure lying on the floor.
There were no classes at the academy today.
Little Jing Kong had not gone anywhere. Instead, he stayed in the room, playing quietly while waiting for Gu Jiao to wake up.
The weather was sweltering, so Xiao Heng had laid a cooling mat on the floor for him.
As Little Jing Kong played, he eventually sprawled out on the mat, his chubby cheek squished against it, leaving his face adorably plump. Drool pooled beneath him, and his tiny bottom stuck up in the air as he slept soundly.
"Awake?"
A deep, smooth male voice came from above her.
Gu Jiao blinked and tilted her head to look at Xiao Heng.
This awkward angle was quite a challenge, and she felt as though her neck might snap.
Xiao Heng quickly stood up and sat down on the edge of the bed. He reached out his slender, jade-like hand to touch her forehead, “No more fever.”
Gu Jiao’s vision was still slightly blurry, but she could clearly see the relief and happiness in his expression, which brought a glimmer of light to her own eyes.
“You’re here too.” she said.
Xiao Heng withdrew his hand, and in a rare moment, he let out a faint snort. “What do you mean, ‘you’re here too’? So I’m the second thing you noticed.”
Gu Jiao replied earnestly, “That’s because you were sitting in the wrong spot—too high up. I had to roll my eyes back just to see you.”
Hearing her articulate words and sharp reasoning, Xiao Heng immediately felt reassured that she was no longer in serious danger.
She had been caught in the rain during the final round of selection and was brought back to the Imperial Advisor’s Hall, where she had battled a high fever for three days and nights. It was only this morning that her fever finally subsided, and now it was already afternoon.
“How are you feeling?”
“How’s the Black Wind King?”
The two spoke at the same time.
Xiao Heng couldn’t help but chuckle. “The Black Wind King is fine. Look.”
As he spoke, he pointed toward the window.
Gu Jiao tilted her head slightly, but the angle wasn’t right, so she couldn’t see.
Xiao Heng gently helped her sit up.
Now everything came into view.
The Black Wind King was recovering well, with several layers of bandages wrapped around its body. It was currently resting in the shade under a large tree in the courtyard.
Behind it, the horse king was frolicking about, bouncing around like an overly energetic child who had just had too much sugar, running back and forth excitedly!
Xiao Heng had anticipated her concern for the Black Wind King, so he had brought it to the courtyard, ensuring she could see it the moment she woke up.
“That’s great.” Gu Jiao said with a soft smile.
As Gu Jiao gazed at the Black Wind King, it seemed to sense her attention and looked back at her.
A silent understanding passed between them, an unspoken connection that needed no words.
Gu Jiao knew that it was truly fine now.
The Black Wind King also knew that Gu Jiao was now okay.
After a pause, Gu Jiao asked, “By the way, what about Gu Changqing? Is he alright?”
Gu Changqing had faced off against Qi Xuan, a Tang Sect expert who had also brought along numerous Han Family death warriors.
Xiao Heng replied, “He sustained some minor injuries, but nothing serious now. You don’t need to worry. Also, Qi Xuan is dead.”
He had been killed by Gu Changqing himself.
For someone who had repeatedly tried to harm Gu Jiao, Gu Changqing wouldn’t have let Qi Xuan leave alive, even if it meant perishing alongside him.
As for the Han Family’s death warriors, not a single one had survived.
“Additionally, Gu Changqing asked me to remind you that Jun Xiuhan is a formidable opponent.”
The main reason Gu Changqing was able to successfully kill Qi Xuan was that Jun Xiuhan had dealt with the Han Family’s death warriors.
Gu Changqing needed to remain focused, only then could he unleash his full combat strength.
"Jun, Xiu, Han." Gu Jiao murmured thoughtfully.
“I owe someone a favor. Consider it repaid through you.”
Who exactly did Jun Xiuhan owe a favor to? And why did it have to be repaid through her?
“Aren’t you the least bit concerned about yourself?” Xiao Heng looked at her with a serious expression.
"Huh?" Gu Jiao blinked in confusion. "What about me?"
Xiao Heng took a deep breath, telling himself to stay calm. "Do you even realize that you had a high fever for three days and nearly went blind?"
Gu Jiao was stunned for a moment before nodding. "Oh, right, that did happen. I almost forgot. Fifth Master Han used some underhanded trick and poisoned me. But I can see now."
Though her vision was still a bit blurry.
"Lady Nan came by and detoxified you." Xiao Heng explained. "Your eyesight will gradually recover, but until then, don’t wander around recklessly."
Gu Jiao opened her mouth as if to say something.
"I know what you’re going to ask." Xiao Heng said, cutting her off. He knew her all too well. She didn’t care much about her own condition but was always worrying about others.
Xiao Heng continued, "Gu Changqing’s antidote will be ready soon. It’s not a particularly difficult poison to cure, but a few of the ingredients require careful drying. You can pick it up in three days. Are you reassured now?"
Gu Jiao opened her mouth again.
Xiao Heng sighed.
“It hasn’t been exposed.”
“There are no side effects.”
"Everything is perfectly fine."
Gu Jiao made a small sound of acknowledgment and then cheerfully exclaimed, "Lady Nan is amazing!"
Xiao Heng couldn’t help but chuckle, both exasperated and amused. He shook his head and let out a helpless chuckle.
Then he gently took her hand, brushing aside a stray lock of her hair, "You’re amazing too, my Commander."
Gu Jiao widened her eyes, "Hm?"

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
