New target spotted, Xuan Louze raised his hand to greet Xuan Dongsi. “Cousin, are you going to pick up our cousin?”
Seeing Xuan Louze made Xuan Dongsi’s blood boil, but hearing Xuan Louze’s question, he paused. “Which cousin are you talking about?”
“Our second cousin.” Xuan Louze feigned confusion. “You don’t know? My elder sister told me that our second cousin is in the palace and asked me to pick her up. But it’s too embarrassing to go alone, so I wanted someone to come with me. You seem free, why not join me?”
Xuan Dongsi was unaware that everyone who had gone out with Xuan Louze had met with accidents. He thought for a moment and agreed. “Fine, let’s go.”
“Should we take a carriage? Walking everywhere is tiring.” Xuan Louze suggested.
“Are you that delicate?” Xuan Dongsi mocked. “No carriage. Walking is good exercise for the legs.”
Why did he feel like hitting someone? Xuan Louze clenched his fists. “You can walk. I’ll take the carriage.” He instructed the gatekeeper, “Fetch the best carriage from the mansion.”
Fearing that Xuan Louze might hang them up again, the gatekeeper hurried to prepare. “Please wait a moment, Young Master.”
Seeing how the servants feared Xuan Louze made Xuan Dongsi even angrier. “Will walking kill you?”
Xuan Louze turned back. “Aren’t you still owing me ten thousand taels of silver?”
Xuan Dongsi exploded and attacked Xuan Louze. “How dare you bring that up! If it weren’t for you, our family wouldn’t be such a laughingstock now!”
Shouldn’t he be blaming himself? How dare he blame Xuan Louze! “Have you thought about who started all this?” Xuan Louze said with a cold smile, reaching out to strike Xuan Dongsi’s wrist.
A cracking sound echoed, and Xuan Dongsi’s wrist was filled with excruciating pain, his sword clattering to the ground.
Xuan Dongsi held his broken wrist with his other hand, seething with rage. “Xuan Louze, I will definitely kill you.” He shouted as he ran back into the mansion to get his wrist treated.
At the same time, the gatekeeper returned with the carriage. “Young Master, your carriage is ready.”
Xuan Louze glanced at the luxurious carriage, satisfied. He tossed five taels of silver to the gatekeeper. “Take this and get yourself a drink.”
“Thank you, Young Master! Thank you!” The gatekeeper was surprised by the reward and kept thanking Xuan Louze.
Xuan Louze climbed onto the carriage and drove it himself to the palace. All the traps set earlier had been neutralized, making the journey unusually smooth.
Upon reaching the palace gate, Xuan Louze introduced himself. The guard asked him to wait while he reported his arrival.
Feeling a bit bored, Xuan Louze waited.
Soon, Dong Denglin approached. “What are you doing here?”
Xuan Louze explained, “My family sent me to fetch my second cousin. Are you going into the palace?”
“Why is your second cousin in the palace?” Dong Denglin asked, puzzled.
“I’d like to know that too.” Xuan Louze wasn’t really concerned about Xuan Dong’er; he was more interested in the sword.
“Come on, I’ll take you to the concubine’s palace.” Dong Denglin offered to help, hoping to gain Xuan Louze’s favor.
“Thank you.” Xuan Louze bowed slightly.
Led by Dong Denglin, Xuan Louze smoothly reached the concubine’s palace.
Xuan Louze glanced around, noticing the stark contrast between the desolation outside the city and the opulence within the palace. It was a glaring injustice. “Thank you, Prince. You can go ahead. I’ll find my cousin myself.”
“Don’t mention it.” Dong Denglin said, not leaving but instead walking further into the palace. “Come on, I’m here to see the concubine as well.”
Xuan Louze, “…”
The concubine, hearing Dong Denglin’s voice, personally came out to greet him. “Second Prince.”
Xuan Louze stood aside, observing the concubine adorned in gold and jewels, a stark contrast to the suffering refugees outside.
Dong Denglin looked at the concubine coldly, questioning her. “Is Xiaoyun your person?”
The concubine’s face turned pale, and she quickly denied it. “Why would the Prince say that? I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“He attempted to assassinate me, claiming you were behind it.” With his family’s power consolidated, Dong Denglin was fearless and directly confronted the concubine, who now appeared as timid as a servant.
The concubine knelt immediately. “Please, Prince, I did not instruct anyone to assassinate you. I wouldn’t dare even if I had the courage.”
Whether Dong Denglin believed her or not, he helped her up and straightforwardly said, “Your cousin is here to fetch Xuan Dong’er. Let her out.”
Xuan Dong’er emerged, her face grim. “Why did the family send you to fetch me?”
“Be glad I came. Everyone else refused.” Xuan Louze snapped back.
“Impossible!” Xuan Dong’er, despite her beauty, looked fierce when angry, diminishing her attractiveness.
“Cousin, face reality. If they wanted to come, would I be the one standing here?” Xuan Louze was exasperated by her sense of entitlement. Did she really think the whole family revolved around her?
Unable to accept this, Xuan Dong’er saw herself as an abandoned child and stormed back home in a fury.
Xuan Louze bowed to Dong Denglin. “Thank you, Prince. I’ll take my leave. Let’s drink together another day.”
“Looking forward to it.” Dong Denglin smiled faintly.
Xuan Louze glanced at the top of the concubine’s palace. With the Second Prince here, he had unwittingly thwarted an assassination attempt. “Thanks.”
Back at the mansion, Xuan Louze dragged Xuan Dong’er to the family head. “I brought her back. Now give me the sword used by our great-grandfather.”
“Absurd! How can our great-grandfather’s sword be given to you?” The family head slammed the table, the sound silencing everyone in the study.
“But you promised it. I fetched her back; now you deny it?” Xuan Louze thought if they refused, he’d simply take it by force, consequences be damned.
“Who promised you that?” The family head was furious.
“Xuan Loufei,” Xuan Louze pointed outside. “She told me Xuan Dong’er was in the palace and that I’d get the sword as a reward for fetching her back.”
The family head’s anger surged. “Bring Xuan Loufei here!”
“She’s severely injured and can’t come.” Xuan Louze said helplessly.
Fifth Master Xuan added, “Today, Loufei went out, got hit by a horse, then run over by a carriage. She’s recuperating.”
The family head was speechless.
