Chapter 1814: Truly Just One Step Away
Editor: Atlas Studios
Gazing at the light in his hand, Xu Qing recalled the battle against the Mother River’s Lord God beyond Wanggu.
Back then, he had borrowed the opponent’s divine authority and combined it with his Ordinance Law to trace the origins of his divine abilities.
Regarding morning glow, he had gained insight—realizing it was one ten-thousandth fragment of a mysterious light worshiped by the Brilliant Heaven God Race!
And that mysterious light, when traced further back...
Was the first ray of light to appear when Wanggu formed.
"Now it seems there’s a reason the Brilliant Heaven God Race worshiped this light. Their bodies contain crystalline structures, especially those light cones in Their heads."
"I wonder if They were always like this or if Their forms changed due to worshiping that first light."
Xu Qing narrowed his eyes and clenched his right hand.
The light cones in his palm shattered into powder.
The radiance within flowed into his body, merging with his morning glow.
After completing this, Xu Qing raised his head and looked across Brilliant Heaven, his eyes gleaming with intrigue.
His anticipation for this journey grew stronger.
"Members of the Brilliant Heaven God Race emit this light upon death."
"We studied it back then and found it peculiar. Most of it dissipates quickly, but occasionally, some fragments endure when fused with the rising sun of Wanggu."
Old Master Seventh, having steadied his emotions, looked at Xu Qing.
"The morning glow you possess is one such surviving fragment."
"But in truth, the light left behind by deceased Brilliant Heaven members is merely a billionth of its source. The true origin has always been enshrined by Their race."
"At least, that’s how it was when we arrived. According to our investigations, this race seems to have... emerged from that very light."
"They call it... the Primal Light."
"Even after Their defeat and sealing by Profound Earth, They managed to preserve it."
"And after our victory, our losses were too severe to push Them to desperation, so we didn’t forcibly take it."
Old Master Seventh’s voice carried the weight of history, like dust scattered by time.
Then, he glanced once more at the plains before him, as if severing an emotional tether, and strode forward.
"The old man misses his master. He’s been waiting all this time, only to realize the one who returned... wasn’t truly him."
Erniu approached Xu Qing, watching Old Master Seventh’s receding figure with rare solemnity.
"Such is the way of the world."
He sighed, his enthusiasm dimming as if recalling something personal.
Xu Qing remained silent, thinking of Erniu weeping amidst the ruins in the spacetime turbulence.
’Master’s past is no longer shrouded in mystery, but Eldest Senior Brother...’
Xu Qing studied Erniu but didn’t ask about that moment in the turbulence.
Everyone was their own person, with secrets and burdens.
Old Master Seventh had his. Erniu had his. Reflecting on his own life, Xu Qing realized he had his too.
In silence, he stepped forward to stand beside Erniu, and together they followed Old Master Seventh through Brilliant Heaven.
Step by step, the scene mirrored their journey to the underground palace years ago.
Time flowed.
An hour later, as Zhou Zhengli and the others suppressed temples and slew gods across Brilliant Heaven, stirring the anomalous substances into turmoil, the trio arrived at their destination—
An endless, raging sea!
It roared like an enraged beast, its waters pitch-black and reeking of blood, as if time itself could not erode its hue or scent.
Moreover, divine might and immortal will clashed here like fire and water, their invisible conflict stirring perpetual storms across the sea and sky.
Erniu’s main body resided on an island in this very sea.
"This is also the only place my divine sense couldn’t penetrate due to that radiant light."
Xu Qing studied the sea thoughtfully as Old Master Seventh’s voice rang out.
"Fourth, Eldest, remember this place."
His expression was grave.
"This sea is where Profound Earth’s First Immortal battled the Brilliant Heaven God Emperor!"
"Their fight lasted ages until the God Emperor was beheaded, His body shattered."
"His skull was taken by the Summer Immortal Palace, while His corpse fell here, becoming this Black Sea."
"As for Profound Earth’s First Immortal... he perished here, leaving only a remnant soul that later became the First Heavenly Dao of Wanggu."
"Without him, there would be no Wanggu as we know it."
Old Master Seventh bowed deeply toward the sea.
Xu Qing and Erniu followed suit.
As they paid their respects, the sea erupted with deafening booms, its waves surging higher. The immortal will within swelled abruptly, casting a rainbow across the black waters that painted the sky.
Only after a long while did the radiance fade.
And as it dissipated, an island materialized in the distance.
"Master, Eldest Senior Brother’s main body is there."
Xu Qing’s gaze settled on the island.
Old Master Seventh glanced over.
"Quite the spot you have picked."
Erniu, having shaken off his earlier melancholy, was about to speak when—
Old Master Seventh had already stepped forward.
Blinking, Erniu turned to Xu Qing.
"Little Qing, you’re about to witness proof that your Eldest Senior Brother wasn’t lying!"
Xu Qing smiled and, with Erniu in tow, crossed the sea in a single step.
They reappeared alongside Old Master Seventh on the island, standing before a crumbling temple.
The temple must have been majestic once, but now only broken walls remained, its gates shattered, allowing a clear view inside.
Amid the rubble of a toppled statue, a large head rested in a corner—
Erniu’s head!
Beside it, a nearly hairless rat lounged lazily, occasionally flicking its tail to toss bits of dried meat into the head’s mouth.
The group’s arrival startled the rat. Its eyes widened, and in a flash, it leaped up, hoisted the head with practiced ease, and prepared to flee.
"Little Qing, don’t run! It’s me!"
Erniu shouted urgently just as the rat was about to bolt.
Xu Qing raised an eyebrow.
The scruffy rat paused, eyeing Erniu suspiciously.
Erniu hurried over, his form dissolving into blue light that merged into the still-closed-eyed head.
Main body and clone reunited.
The head trembled, then slowly opened its eyes.
The rat looked overjoyed.
"What happened to all your flesh?"
Old Master Seventh sighed as he entered the temple, staring at the head on the ground.
Erniu coughed and was about to explain when—
A thunderous roar, like the cracking of heaven and earth, erupted beyond the island.
The entire landmass quaked as the sea outside surged violently, its waves towering higher than ever before.
Then... the boundless sea began to sink!
At an alarming rate, the waters receded as if being sucked away, revealing the seabed and the mountain ranges beneath.
The island where they stood was actually the peak of a colossal submerged mountain!
And beneath these mountains lay an unimaginably enormous corpse—
Headless, Its body seemingly pieced together.
The mountains grew upon It.
The sea had been Its drink.
Divine might erupted from Its form, churning the anomalous substances in the skies.
But that wasn’t the most shocking part...
The most shocking sight was the corpse’s surface—covered in a squirming layer of blue worms!
Countless in number, some had even burrowed into Its wounds, all frantically gnawing away!
Old Master Seventh was stunned.
Xu Qing’s pupils constricted.
Meanwhile, Erniu’s head hopped onto Xu Qing’s shoulder and cackled triumphantly.
"Old man, you asked where my flesh went? It’s all right there!"
"And Little Qing, see? Your Eldest Senior Brother wasn’t lying!"
"Given enough time, I would’ve devoured this resurrecting Brilliant Heaven God Emperor and unified Brilliant Heaven!"
"Truly... just one step away!"
