Martial King’s Retired Life

Book 16: Chapter 18

Book 16: Chapter 18

The guide showed as much emotion as he did when he led them to the trap – zilch. To the contrary, the folks he brought with him either looked interested or eager to entertain themselves through violence. The visual cues were enough to determine that the pugilistic world warriors were mercenaries – or lap dogs, to put it bluntly. That said, it would have been unwise to underestimate lap dogs that Dark Robe Brotherhood would be willing to hire.

The big man to the left had the unforgettable sharp eyes and an ordinary sword that drew eyes to it.

The young lady besides him licked her lips upon laying her eyes on Bai Lian and Su Xiao, but the black whip she strapped to her narrow waist suggested she was anything but friendly.

The teenage girl besides her held her three-section nunchaku in her shaky hands.

The tanned boy next to the teenage girl did not draw much attention. That said, he had an oddly scary gaze for someone armed with a hatchet.

The most concerning individual was the man to the far right, who demanded attention with his appearance alone. On top of sporting a plethora of different tattoos across his body, he looked half asleep while hanging a foxtail from his mouth. His stance with his horse chopper looked as unsightly as his hair. He had three different short swords from different nations strapped to his left leg, a sword on one side of his waist and a broadsword on the opposite side of his waist.

The atmosphere in the abode was bizarre despite everything appearing elegant. Now that there was unmistakable hostility oozing from the five, it actually made the duo feel a sense of relief.

“May I ask for your names? Would you like to explain yourselves before we fight?” Bai Lian initially had apprehensions about fighting in case it implicated Brilliant Consort, but she was more than willing to fight now that she had a justified reason to defend herself. “Are you going to use violence without justification, or have your tongues been cut off, too?”

The young girl went red in the face. “Who do you think you’re insulting?! We’re ‘Deities Without Five Hands’!”

It was not Bai Lian’s first time hearing the group’s name since the five youths had been making quite the name for themselves recently. It was not the fact that one of them was ranked among Seventeen Wyrms that made them memorable. Rather, it was the fact that five people from different backgrounds and sects shared common goals and moral standards. She did not expect to be fighting the five who built their reputation on helping those in need on their first meeting. The credibility of the pugilistic world was called into question.

“Wei, that was reckless. Why would you tell them who we are? We’re bad guys now.” The big man to the left surprisingly sounded friendly contrary to his appearance.

“It’s her fault for saying something so scary,” responded Wei.

“It’s fine.” The boy with the hatchet flashed his pearly whites. “We’re the bad guys this time anyway.”

The others nodded.

The unkempt man laughed, and the moment he opened his eyes, it was as if his muscles came to life. “Han, that was good. You’ve matured.”

“So, who’s going first?” questioned the charming woman. “Here’s a disclaimer: the two of them are my cups of tea, so I want in. Lion, you better stay out of my way.”

“Lion”, or rather, the sleepy-looking man, wagged his hands. “I’m still recovering from my injuries. I’m sitting this one out.”

“Aren’t you going to come at us together?” questioned Bai Lian.

Lion grinned. “Young Master prettier than a lady, the five of us always fight one-on-one. Besides, as young people, it’s better mentally and physically to fight one-on-one, right?”

Their attitudes had Bai Lian questioning if the pugilistic world had transformed without her knowledge.

In the end, the five of them drew lots, which took a while, to decide who was fighting.

“Ah? Uncle Ying and Sister Langya?”

“Did you two cheat? How come it’s always you two?”

“It’s called competence,” responded the sharp-eyed man, stepping out of the group alongside Miss Langya.

Miss Langya winked at Su Xiao. “Please go easy on me.”

Bai Lian was worried Su Xiao lacked the experience to handle a whip user, only to see him close his eyes and hold up an iron broadsword that he took from the servant he subdued earlier. While she was engaged in dialogue with the five of them, Su Xiao’s attention was elsewhere.

Langya was going to continue teasing Su Xiao until she heard Lion yell, “Watch out!”

Like a flying avalanche, Langya suddenly saw nothing but a blade zooming towards her head.
